  • Bazm e Khas presents Raag Desh performed by Shahid Parvez Khan.
Raag Desh (Des) is a very delightful and passionately fanciful night-time raag. This Raag belongs to Khamaaj Thaat. It is a popular Raag, well suited for light classical and seasonal compositions. It is sometimes considered as a monsoon Raag also.
The versatile man and Noble Laureate, Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore, has very often used Desh Raag in his songs (Rabindra sangeet). There are many famous songs, like, "PYAR HUA CHUPKE SE (1942 a Love Story)", which are based on Raag Desh. But the most iconic composition of all would be the Indian National Song "Vande Mataram", which is purely based on Raag Desh.
This online baithak was held at the initiative of Ved Gupta in Los Angeles, as a part of bazm e Khas foundation live concerts..
The idea behind this upload is to preserve this collection of great music for all music lovers and students of Hindustani music.

Thank you bazm e khas for such great uploads of ustad ji.
If I could make a humble request.
Please request ustad ji to play rarer raags like chandrakauns, sampurna malkauns kanakangi and bihagada as well.
It would truly be a learning experience for fans like us

The reason that certain raags become rare could be that there are intrinsic structural weaknesses.

      @@shouqie844 weakness in a raaga?

@@blenditlikethat9158 Yes, in the acoustic architecture or there could be several raags very close to a given raag that to keep them separate , one has to think analytically- at the expense of emotional content. Sumparan Malkauns is a very fine raag but it is close to Kaunsi Kanhara. Similarly, it is difficult to separate Suha and Sughrai . And Malsri has just three notes and one can hardly sing it for more than 5 minutes. However, there are raags like Desh and Tilak Kamod that use the same notes but have very distinct structure that they continue to be mainstream raags.

@@shouqie844 fair enough but still doesn't mean it can't be performed or explored and personally I wouldn't tag that as a weakness but I do understand where you are coming from

I am sorry to say, at the risk of being viciously attacked, this is not very good Desh. It often degenerates into Tilak Kamod, and it needs skill and perception to distinguish one from another for a player. I am directly after listening to Bahauddin Dagar playing Desh on a rudra veena - a much more palatable serving, I must admit. Yes, Parvez is a monster of a sitarist, but here is has not done very well, I am afraid.

I thought so too, though I cannot explain why technically. I listen more to carnatic music and I'm reminded more of Khamas than Desh. Even Jaijaiwanti at places, but the signature phrases of Desh (my references are Vande Mataram and Man Mandira, and a thillana of Lalgudi Jayaraman) are missing.
