- We've currently tested 22 LG soundbars, including all of the models in the 2022 lineup. The brand makes well-built soundbars with lots of connectivity options, but the models we've tested don't always stand out in respect to sound quality. See our recommendations for the best LG soundbars below.

**Update: We can no longer confirm that the SPK8-S rear speakers work with the S90QY. If you're looking for a rear speaker kit, you'll want to consider the SPQ8-S. We'd like to apologize for any confusion this may have caused!
Do you guys know if the S95 back speakers can be synced with the S90? I know you can get the SPQ8-S but was curious if you could get the s95s to work
Do the SPK8-S still work with the S80QY?
3:36 so s75q does not work with rear speakers too?
And what you say on LG SP7?
Best in the biz! Thanks for another great RTNGS review.
Would love to see an updated 1440p monitor buyers guide for 2022, there’s a lot of options and it’s becoming popular! Love the content as always
Thanks for the suggestion, it's definitely a good idea. We can't make any guarantees that we'll be able to do this anytime soon, but we'll definitely keep it in mind for future video ideas!
I agree. I have the S80QY + SPQ8-S. The new up firing center channel doesn’t make a big difference. It’s a slight improvement. I would say the big improvement would be the SPQ8-S rear speakers and the 60% coverage LG claims. I haven’t had any interference from the subwoofer or the rear speakers which is awesome. Surprisingly the new rear speaker kit is louder than the previous unit.
Is spq8s compatible with older sp8ya ? If you can check it would be great. Thanks.
@@sudarshan081 Unfortunately it’s not. The SPQ8-S is only compatible with the new 2022 sound bars. I tried it with my SL10YG and didn’t connect. That’s why I got the S80QY. Syncs perfectly.
Thank you for your response , I Have sp8ya so I will have to buy k8s then.
@@sudarshan081 yeah that kit will work. Hopefully lg will make them compatible soon bc they sound great.
It’s so little info about the s75qR that it freaks me out from buying it. The Dolby atmos demo sounded great especially given how big the store was. But between the lack of info/support and the subwoofer being sub par I’ll stick to my little Vizio m series that I got for 89$ lol. Crazy how good their subs are for how cheap it is
Let me begin by saying I appreciate the work your channel does in providing objective reviews of products and in this case, soundbars. My current experience though with the LG SC9S and the JBL Bar 700 has me curious about how your category ratings are derived.
I currently have both the SC9S and Bar 700 in my living room as we're looking for a soundbar to maximize dialogue for movies and shows. Due to the location of our 55" LG OLED we have limited options for soundbars with a maximum 2.5" height restriction and subwoofer size/design due to placement issues. Again due to the location I had to eliminate soundbars with side firing drivers as in our situation they'd be firing into a stereo speaker unrelated to the TV on the left or into our entertainment cabinet on the right. For that reason I gave preference to soundbars with their drivers facing mostly forward and the JBL 500 was ruled out for that reason. Your site did not review the Bar 700 but does give excellent ratings (8.5~8.6) for the dialogue performance of the JBL 500, 1000 and 1300X. Other sites rank the 700 as an improvement in all areas over the 500 and those factors are what drove my decision for the 700. The LG SC9S was on sale for $590 and the JBL Bar 700 for $699 so close enough in price. Obviously the SC9S has up firing ATMOS drivers which the Bar 700 lacks but the JBL has the removable wireless satellites of which neither are that important for us in our situation. Your review and rating of the LG SC9S was complimentary and you gave it a good 8.1 score for dialogue but not quite in the league of the JBL's.
I set up both bars below our LG panel and connected them for a simple A/B comparison. In short, with many different types of programming we've never once found the JBL dialogue as clear and intelligible as the LG regardless of how the JBL is set through the app. The JBL app is extremely limited in the control it provides so all one can adjust are the lows, mids and highs with the very basic equalizer. We've found the dialogue actually improves more often by turning JBL's "Pure Voice" off. Dialogue on the JBL can have a hollow effect and turning off Pure Voice seems to correct that. Dialogue out of the LG is solid, up front and focused with a more effective applied tone curve. We actually prefer the LG set to "Bass Blast" but then with the woofer turned downed a few db and the center and up firing speakers turned up a few db with 2 or 3 db of enhancement in the high frequencies. The LG provides an abundance of control and tuning options with direct level adjustments of both the center and up firing drivers. With careful adjustments I can get the LG to sound close to the JBL for music, etc but I can't get the JBL to provide the dialogue clarity of the LG. Frankly, based on our experience I'd rank the LG at least .5 points ahead of the JBL in that category or opposite of how your site has them ranked.
I've been an audio enthusiast since my early teens and always had good quality sound systems. I sold high end audio in the 1970's and JBL was always my preferred speaker and I was expecting the Bar 700 to outperform the SC9S. Frankly I'm confused, at least with these two products on how your site develops its ratings. Are they based solely on instrumented measurements or do you have people listening in an objective blind comparison? There are no retailers in my area that have soundbars setup for A/B comparison so one is unfortunately stuck with relying on sites like yours or doing what I did. I fully expected the JBL to be noticeably better for dialogue based on your reviews and now in my experience your ratings are suspect to say the least.
Please help me to understand.

Great sound
I just purchased the S90QY. It's definitely gonna take time to get used to. Can't figure out how to get sound using the HDMI. So, I used my OPT.
I have it hooked up to my 55" LG C1 Series OLED. It does sound great. But I wonder if the HDMI would make it sound better or not.
Didn't know you could hook up rear speakers. I'm definitely buying those here soon.
Overall, I'm happy over the purchase. I just wish I knew more about how to set it up. I'm new to this kind of stuff.
I miss my really old surround sound setup. I used to have a 5 disc DVD changer with a center speaker, 2 towers, and 4 small tweeter speakers that hang up in each corner of the room. That surround sound was a gift from God himself. That thing pissed neighbors off 3 houses away, lol. But I don't think they make those anymore. Also, if I was watching a movie that had a helicopter in it. That helicopter literally sounded like it was flying around my head, and the vibration and loud sound felt like there was truly a helicopter over my house.
Man, I miss that so much. These sound bars have nothing on the old surround sounds.
Thanks for the really helpful video! Really enjoyed it. However, noted that the LG SP8YA is not within the range here. Are you able to share any thoughts on how it might compare with the ones reviewed in this video? Thank you!
If you want to compare the LG SP8YA to other soundbars, then it might be worth utilizing our comparison tool: www.rtings.com/soundbar/tools/compare/lg-sp8ya-vs-sonos-arc/24275/13760?usage=8767&threshold=0.10

Thank you for the great content!
What bar/system do you recomend fot lg c1 and ps5 ?
Bye!
Hi Johnny,
We don't currently offer recommendations for specific setups like that, but these would be our top soundbar picks! www.rtings.com/soundbar/reviews/best/soundbar
excellent video!!
I purchased the S90, I think it’s a lot of bang for your buck. I also purchased the rear speaker kit. Man I really really reallly wish they would allow us to purchase the 95 rear speakers or even a second option that’s somewhere in between the low end speakers and S95 surround speakers. The system would be much better if I had a up firing speakers in my surround. I still think it’s a quality package for less than 1k especially if you have a mid to small size room. Based on my previous Samsung and Sonos, I think it does a better job at tricking the ears with surround and the quality of sound is about as good as you’re going to get at that price point… but then again, what do I know haha
Anyways great video, it helped me with my purchase!
Best Buy had a crazy sale for the S80 and more significantly the S90. The S90
was $700 and open box could be found for $595. I was debating on splurging on the Sonos Arc + Sub but after that sale it makes little sense to pass on the LG S90
I would love to see a video on how manufacturers come up with these crazy model numbers.
This i one of our favorite memes on the matter haha www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/j8o7p2/why_the_weird_names_on_monitors/
@@RTINGSdotcom That’s funny.
Do I need to connect the rear speakers to the wires provided by LG as I already have a prewiring done for my house can I connect those instead and use Bluetooth for audio connection ?
Hey Adam, well done. But, I need absolute assurance that LG has cleaned up the bugs from past years. The WiFi and Bluetooth interference problems have haunted my SLY8G. If you can tell me they have indeed fixed these issues, then I could probably stick with LG

I wish you guys did a similar video on Samsung's 2022 soundbar lineup. I can't seem to find any information on their Q line of soundbars that isn't the Q990 or Q900. I don't want a $1000+ soundbar. This video is awesome for the LG lineup though
That’s a good idea and something we’ll explore when we resume making UA-cam videos again. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!
Will you buy the THEM models too /s
Are their 3rd party Subs that can be used with the S80QY that provide a better low end experience? The one that comes with the kit is ok, but looking for more punch on the lower end.

can u do a sound test comparison between a soundbar a budget bookshelf speaker setup
Since we don't currently test bookshelf speakers, we wouldn't be able to do this comparison. Once our speaker methodology evolves though and we start testing new products, we'll keep this suggestion in mind! :)
Has LG sound bars gotten better than they were a few years ago? I'm asking this question because I don't hear that much about them as opposed the others on the market.
Hey Michael,
Honestly, there probably hasn't been any crazy improvements over the past few years. For instance, if you look at the LG SP9YA and the LG SN9YG (2020 vs 2021 models), there's a marginal difference at most. One of the biggest things you might notice is some of the newer bars starting to be more "future ready" (HDMi 2.1 support, 4k/120hz passthrough, etc). You could also use our comparison tool to compare models from previous years to help give you a better idea of how they compare to one another! www.rtings.com/soundbar/tools/compare/sonos-beam-vs-sonos-arc/836/13760?usage=8767&threshold=0.10
@@RTINGSdotcom thank you for answering my sound bar question. Honestly I have sound bars hooked up to my TV's but it's only because as we all have experienced TV speakers on most TV's are not really that good. The sound bars I have get the job done for me.
Hello. I just bought a G2 OLED and with the TV there's a 50% discount for LG G1 soundbar. I'm not sure about its specs. S75Q seems to have TV Sound Mode Share which as far as I understand it's the same tech Q-Symohony in Samsung. G1 soundbar does not seem to have it and I think it is a shame that TV speakers to stay idle when there's chance to be a part of the experience. What do you think about that? An optical cable can solve it or it is a whole different tech? Thank you.
Sorry, we're not exactly sure what you're wondering, could you clarify?
Interested in how the LG S95QR compares to the Nakamichi Ultra 9.2.4 with earc (1300 watt). Also, say you get a new TV that’s not LG brand, does the LG soundbar play well with non-LG tv brands?
Hey William we actually do our testing with a Samsung and Sony TV, so you shouldn't have any issues using it with a non-LG brand TV!
@@RTINGSdotcom Thanks. Any thoughts on how it compares to the new 2022 Nakamichi?
Could you also review Samsung’s 2022 soundbar range. The q series
We’ve already purchased a few of the new 2022 Q series Samsung soundbars and have several more on our suggestion list (which means we’ll buy and review those as well if there’s enough interest). So, stay tuned 👀
I listen avenger infinity war on cinema mode at volume 27 on my LG S95QR. I am afraid that I can have blew a speaker. At what level you think you can go before damaging the system?
Dolby Atmos requires an eArc input on your TV so if you have an older set without that, spending more for the Dolby Atmos models would not offer any real sonic benefit, correct? Also, I don’t think the Virtual DTX feature is mentioned so I assume that is more or less a gimmick?
If you don't have an eARC port, then that's right, you won't be able to take advantage of Atmos. However, it's still a good idea if you want to future proof your setup. So, if you get a newer TV in the future, you'll have a soundbar you can take full advantage of. As for DTS:X, this is something we expand on in the audio format support section of our full reviews. So, feel free to check it out and let us know if you have any specific questions about it!
Would it be better to wait until Black Friday to purchase the LG S95QR model? It’s on sale now for $1,499. Thank you!
Unfortunately, there's no clear answer to this question and it really depends on what you're goal is. If you just want a soundbar ASAP and this is the one that meets your needs, then go for it. But if you're hoping to just wait and get a better deal on this same soundbar, it's impossible to say what sort of price drop it'll have (if any). If you're not in a rush and are okay with waiting to save a little bit, then that's fine but again it's up to you!
i have a small room and the 95 is probably an overkill (plus i dont have space behind me for the rear speakers just on both sides of me) i wanted the 90 for the best experience but unfortunately they only sell the 80 or the 95 in my country. is it be a big difference in sound quality and the dolby quality between the 2 models or its not really noticeable?
Hey OG! In this case, it should help to use our comparison tool to compare the sounbars you're curious about. You'll be able to see how they perform compared to another! www.rtings.com/soundbar/tools/compare/sonos-beam-vs-sonos-arc/836/13760?usage=8767&threshold=0.10 If it's still unclear or you have follow up questions though, please don't hesitate to reach out!
By adding the SPQ8-S or SPK8-S to the S8QY setup does it provide true surround sound (aka 5.1) or is it simulated 5.1?

I am looking to buy budget 5.1.2 surround sound system , I found LG has S75QR in this category , do you have any suggestions like how this soundbar is? And how it compares with Vizio M512-H6 ?
Unfortunately we haven’t bought and tested the S75QR yet, so we can’t say how it compares. It’s on our suggestions list though, so feel free to go vote for it! www.rtings.com/review-pipeline
I purchased the s80qy soundbar and added the spk8 rear speakers as suggested on this review but these won’t currently pair, are they the correct ones?
As far as we know, the SPQ8-S rear speaker kit would be the ones to purchase. Sorry for the confusion, it looks like the info on the manufacturers website might have changed since our video was published. It may be worth double checking with LG to be sure.
What film or tv show do you use to best test Atmos/surround sound performance?
We like to use Ready Player One for our Atmos testing!
Samsung manual's says DRC on will result in distortion. What are your thoughts on this. What according to you should be optimal on or off?
Hi there,
DRC feature, when on, tries to standardize/compresses the sound so it fits the same range, avoiding audio level spikes on some scenes. It is a feature that can come in handy when trying to watch a movie late at night.
If this is not required, then DRC off would provide audio without any compression. When we test a soundbar, we ensure any mode restricting its performance would be off.
Please let us know if you have any additional questions
@@RTINGSdotcom okay got it 👍 I was thinking why samsung turned DRC on by default as manual says the sound may be distorted when turned on
I am really interested in buying the S95QR on my LG OLED C1, but I am a bit concerned about my living room. I am planning to put the rear speakers 4meters/13feet behind my couch and probably 1m/3feet above ear level, because it is a living/dining room combined (more like a long rectangle) and I want the rears to play music aswell (like music while dinner is coming from all 4 corners). Do you think this will work? So play the rears if I play normal spotify music? And do I get a good ATMOS experience or will it be completly overwhelmed by the longer distance? Thank you for your help, Greetings, Alex
PS: I am pretty concerned about your latency test results. 130ms thorugh eARC? isnt that pretty noticeable and should affect the rating more?
I got the S95QR and it's awesome. I played the new Ghostbusters and you really hear the Dolby Atmos. I Got the C1 too.
@@73ocampo so you don't notice any delay in the ping on eArc? In their tests it is 60ms.
@@lemboshauser4700 Hello, not as of yet, I did have to make sure the Dolby Atmos was on on the C1. you will see it display Atmos briefly when playing a movie. Honestly, I'm still learning it.
Hey Lembos,
Just to offer a bit more insight:
if the rear speakers are 4 meters behind couch, that can seem a little far. It may take away from the ATMOS experience with all that distance as the recommendation is to keep the rears near and pointed towards where you are sitting.
As for only using the rears to play music, we originally weren't sure if this would work with stereo content? But we did some additional testing to look into this. For this Soundbar, presets {Bass Blast} and {Cinema} send audio to rears when listening to Spotify for example. However, the audio from the rear speakers is not ideal. Especially for the intent usage in this case, where you would be far away from the rest of the setup.
Sound on both of these presets is echo-ey not immersive much.
As for the eARC results, if you're obtaining similar higher results, then there is a sync setting in the app if that can help align audio, if needed.
Hope some of this information helps!
@@RTINGSdotcom thank you very much, it did help, but I already choose the JBL Bar 9.1, because of your test results similar to all the 2000$ and more soundbars, but cheaper, and for my taste, more flexible, humble and stealthy due to its wireless rears.
Is there anything better than Bose 900 right no that has more features for around the same price? Such as 4K 120 pass through, audio format support for Dolby stuff. Basically I’m looking for something that’s like Bose 900 but with features that Bose is missing such as audio format support, full hdmi in support, surround sound, etc. just don’t wanna buy something that will feel outdated soon. Trying to get the best out of my lg CX mainly used for ps5 gaming lol. Thanks in advance!
The standalone Bose Smart Soundbar 900 is currently retailing for around $800, and for around the same price, I'd recommend checking out something like the Vizio Elevate. It has the audio format support that you're looking for, along with the subwoofer and satellites included in the box. Its soundstage isn't quite as good as what you get with the Bose, but thanks to its rotating sides, you're able to control the width of the sound around you, which is pretty neat! Unfortunately, for that price, it's pretty tough to get something with 4k @ 120Hz passthrough as well (the only bars we've tested so far that have it are the Sony HT-A9, the Sony HT-A5000, and the Sony HT-A7000). I've included a link for our handy table tool as well, which you can play around with based on your price range as well as the features and tools that matter most to you! www.rtings.com/soundbar/tools/table/90575
Does having an LG 2022 OLED TV give any additional reason to use an LG soundbar, aside from conveniences like that wireless connection? An example being Samsung and their Q-Symphony integration/tech.
I think the only thing that is unique is the WOWCAST wireless box you can get separately. The room AI adjustment feature might be a pairings exclusive too but not too sure
What would be a better choice, the S80QY or the Klipsch Fives? They are both at around $500

this isn’t a question about this. i’m just hoping someone answers. i’m going to pull the trigger on a lg c1 but i’m wondering about the upscaling. i use spectrum cable and i mainly watch sports. will it upscale to 4k? will it look good?
I bought a c1 (2021 version) this year. I have DISH. All I've been able to get on their 4k channel is singular football games from FOX. If it's not the 4k channel, it won't upscale and you'll get normal 1080p on HD channels. Not sure if spectrum gives you more options. Honestly if it were just sports, it's not worth it. HOWEVER..you will get the most value from your c1 if you stream with decent internet and next-gen gaming (PS5 and XBOX X Series). I have a PS5 and most of my streaming channels have 4k and you WILL see the difference.
Today I bought a brand new one for 1000 US dollars from a techno market in Izmir Turkey.I switched from Samsung q700a to this. I hope it makes me happy..

This is a bit of a tough question because we prefer to address the performance of individual soundbars from these brands rather than just coming up with a blanket statement for all soundbars for one brand. LG S95QR is totally worth it, on my C1. I'm all set for movie & tv life. Blasts loud & feels like a theater within your home, hell yeah
@jumartinez727 how long are the cables for the rear speaker?
Not sound bar related but I’m looking to get a new 65” 4k tv. I was eyeballing the U6GR and the UG7 and was wondering if it’s worth going for the UG7 or a different option all together. Me and my wife really just want something that puts out good image quality for movies and tv shows.
Hey Branden,
The Hisense U7G is a higher-end TV than the Hisense U6GR, so it has more features and better performance. The U7G gets much brighter, meaning that highlights pop more in HDR. It also has better motion handling, thanks to its quick response time. While they both have VRR support, the U7G has a 120Hz panel with HDMI 2.1 inputs, so it's a better choice for high-frame-rate gaming. Lastly, the U7G doesn't have any issues upscaling lower-resolution content like DVDs, which the U6GR has problems with. So, of the two options, definitely go for the U7G. It's also just a solid overall option that won't break the bank. If you're okay spending a little more, the U8G is even more of an improvements, but you should still be happy with the U7G!
@@RTINGSdotcom ok awesome, we were trying to stay under the $700 mark and the 65” UG7 is on sale for $699!
I’ve been pretty disappointed with the s90qy. The mids are so much louder than the rest of all the other frequencies. The sub also is not nearly loud enough, even when on +6 (the max). I think I’ll end up getting the Bose 900.
If you end up swapping it out, let us know what you think!
The reason i'm looking at this is because i bought the open box bose 900 and havent been able to get it to work. It's going right back to the store
Hey i am looking at the s80qy but i cant use a sub, Can it be used without a sub or should I look at something else if so what do you recommend it needs to fit nicely under a lg c1
While technically it can be used without a sub, it would definitely have an impact on performance and our results would likely no longer be valid. So, it might be better to look for a better standalone soundbar. Some of these could be worth considering: www.rtings.com/soundbar/reviews/best/all-in-one
Hello on the lg 5.1 soundbar there is the option of surround sound setting In the settings part of the column, should this option be set to on or off?
Basically what it does is transform the 2.1 stereo sound into a 5.1 I wonder what is the correct configuration option if it would be on or off since in advance I appreciate in some soundbar there must be original sound or surround sound

If you have a Smart TV that's 5 or more years old (an LG, 3D TV), will a new soundbar work with the older TV--and can the newsoundbar easily be programmed to a DirecTV remote? Thank you.
It really depends on what you mean by “work”. Yes, it should work just fine and produce sound, but depending on the TV you have, it may not support everything the soundbar does. As for direct TV, it isn’t something we’ve tested, so we can’t say for sure. That would be a good question for direct tv though (whether or not you can use their remote in such a setup)!

Hi,
I have the 2020 model DSN11 RG. is it worth updating to the DS95 QR?

Soon I should buy an LG C2 and I was going to get the LG SP8YA soundbar that you talk about very well on your site (the SP9YA is too large for my taste). I have noticed that new soundbar models have been introduced this year. The most important feature for me is a good yield with the dialogue and speech of the TV (a critical feature I think not only for soundbars but also for professional hifi systems). I think that the most interesting alternative to the SP8YA is the S80QY model. These new models thanks to the central speaker should be more performing but from your tests it does not seem like this. Considering that here in Italy the SP8YA costs around € 400 while the S80QY costs around € 750, I think I should buy the first one, am I wrong?
Hi Gianluca,
In this case, it might help to check out our comparison tool and see how the soundbars you're interested in perform for 'Dialogue/TV Shows'. For example, if you take the SP8YA and the S80QY, then the SP8YA actually has the slight overall edge for dialogue! www.rtings.com/soundbar/tools/compare/lg-sp8ya-vs-lg-s80qy/24275/32558?usage=8494&threshold=0.10
@@RTINGSdotcom Ok thanks! It is strange that S80QY with the central speaker is worse with dialogue, what did LG? So I think to take the SP8YA model and I spend less. Now I have an old Yamaha YHT-S401 which plays a sound sometimes like "boxed". Going from this to the SP8YA should I appreciate some general improvement in your opinion?
@@gianluca9795 I think that the SP8YA (2021 model) is one of the best option for C2, for quality/price and for its small height (only 5.7 cm) - now in Italy you can find it for €359
