  • RX 6800XT & 6900XT Power Supply Requirements - Minimum PSU Wattage
AMD's Big Navi RX 6800XT and 6900XT graphics cards are both rated for a 300W TBP, however on AMD's website the 6900XT recommends an 850W PSU, and the 6800XT recommends a 750W PSU. This may lead many people to ask the question, Can my 650W PSU sneak by, and if not, and how much do I really need.

Hey, is a 600w Tier B PSU from the PSU tier list enough, I have the Ryzen 5 3600x, 32GB RAM, M.2 SSD, HDD, B450M and will probably get a 6800, I can't get a return on it now.

@@nark4837 It has ALREADY been proven that the power draw from a CPU, mobo, HDDs and 300-350w GPU, fans is no greater than 550w. They recommend 750w because it is good to have headroom.
So the magic number is 600w PSU. Anyone with a 600w PSU or greater has MORE than enough power 👍

If the 6800XT model you choose has 2 x 8-pin connectors, it can only pull 375 watts normally from your power supply, if you get a 3 x 8-pin, your card can pull 525 watts, which is mostly unnecessary and extremely much. So be aware. If youre a normal user and want to give a maximum of +20% power to your card, take the 2 x 8-pin card, if you want to overclock like crazy, take the 3 x 8-pin, but it will run power hungry as hell.

I am quite conflicted and would love for you to help me out with this lol. Money isn't a factor here. Not too worried about spending more it just comes down to is there a huge difference between the two cards. But you also need to consider the QUALITY of the power supply. Get the highest rated power supply you can afford. If you don't plan on stressing out the system, you should be fine with a high end 650W power supply. If you plan to stress out your rig on a regular basis, go with a higher wattage but don't neglect the quality issue either.

It may depend on the efficiency rating of the PSU. I have a 3900X and 1080ti (with a 330W modded vBIOS) and a custom loop running on a 650W Titanium rated psu without issues. If it was bronze/gold, I would go for 750-850W, but the minimum recommended PSU usually covered even the non-80+ rated PSUs

It is not rating it is power efficiency so if u got a 650w bronz it ll still handle, but it ll pull more power from the wall and most likely it ll get hotter, which means louder overall operation, btw between a gold and a titanium psu the difference is 3-4% depends on load, and a titanium psu sometimes cost double of the gold one even from the same vendor.

Important to know here is that some power supplies do not have enough 8pin connectors. The 6900xt needs 2x8pins to function properly amd the 8pin should not be from a split cable. That's important to know to avoid surprises. I personally have a 730W psu, running a 6900xt fully overclocked just fine. Bought an RM850X PSU and a 5700XT in 2020 and they worked perfectly. 2 years later I upgraded to a XFX RX6900XT. Did my research and the Corsair RM850X was plenty for this card. Well from the day I installed, I had a weird issue where the system wouldn't post on the 1st power up after a cold boot. I'd have to start up the PC 2 or 3 times before it would finally post. Did everything I could think of like updating BIOS, checking cables, replacing cables. I knew it wasn't a driver issue because once it posted, everything was fine and drivers don't load until Windows loads. And I knew it wasn't an issue with the motherboard because I could stick the old 5700XT back in and it booted every time. I have been living with this issue for 2 years. So, I have to power it on a few times to get it to post, big deal. Then the RX6900XT failed. Luckily it was still under warranty and I RMA'd it. Got a brand new RX6900XT and it still does the same damn thing! Today I finally saw a UA-cam video stating the 6900 draws a lot of power and needs two PCIe 8pin connectors coming off the PSU. Well I've been using the splitter cable. You know what I'm talking about? The single cable that plugs into one PCIe output on the PSU that branches off to 2x 8pin connectors that go to the graphics card. I really think that may be the issue because I know this PSU is good and is more than sufficient for the 6900 and I know my motherboard is good too, so this makes sense to me! I'm going to add a second PCIe 8pin tonight and see if that solves the issue. Has anyone else experienced this? And is anyone using two separate PCIe cables for your GPU?

Hey, so something I noticed. Idk about you but I think you'd find it pretty interesting. Ampere doesn't scale well under 4k resolution, as to where RDNA2 scales insanely well. The average consumer is at 1080p, with people moving to 1440p. At 1440p if you compare the rtx3080 scores compared to the rx6800xt, but against the rx6800, the rx6800 is quite even with the rtx3080 for $120 cheaper. Same for the rx6800xt compared to the rtx3090...pretty even, but $850 cheaper. That's pretty huge that you can get even with the 3090 for $850 cheaper and still cheaper than the rtx3080 for the average consumer. The sprinkle of 4k gamers definitely get a bit more value from the rtx3080 with its DLSS but at 1440p I wouldnt pay $120 or $850 for such a feature.

It also depends a lot on which PSU you got: How efficient it is. A Gold or Platinum PSU consumes a fair bit less power than a Plus or Bronze one, especially at higher loads. I am pretty sure that a 650 Watt Gold or Platinum will do the trick for most people, even when you overclock.

850Watt Super Flower Gold rated is not enough juice for the 6900XT overclocked. It must be pulling a lot of wattage since Days Gone crashes my computer when it reaches 250+FPS but limiting it to around 180FPS seems to work perfectly. I've had to upgrade power supplies 3 times now. Should've just started out with a 1000watt gold rated instead of buying them all to find out that an upgrade is needed to keep the power hungry 6900XT happy.

I'm also wondering if a slightly underclocked 6900XT would use less power than a 6800XT, if it were set to match performance of the 6800XT. Mostly because the pricing is no different here lately.

Really depends on the quality of the PSU and how much the 12 volt lane can handle.. In Europe your best bet is likely the EVGA G3 (manufactured by supper flower, same as there own ledex 2).. Its a gold 80+ standard but on European mains power runs at over 90+ efficiency.. Plenty of juice on single lane 12 volt lane. Industry leading jitter and ripple suppression, runs closer to a platinum standard.. Stay away from this power supply though in the US, its performance will go to pot, as you see if you read a review from the US.. Google around though and you should find out how god like this supply is in Europe for the money 💷 💶 ✌️
