Visiting Jewish Autonomy in Russia

  • In summer 2022 I went to Jewish Autonomous Oblast to try to understand how did life of Jewish minorities of the Russian Far East go. Jewish Autonomous Region is one of two official Jewish jurisdictions in the world, the other being Israel. It seems to be an ordinary region of Russian Federation but I managed to find some cultural peculiarities along with the stories of people who live in Birobidzhan since their early ages.
    Timecodes:
00:00 - Obluchye - the Trans-Siberian town of railway workers
02:50 - How many Jews live in Jewish Autonomous Oblast?
03:40 - Exploring Birobidzhan - the capital city of the region
    07:24 - Tasting Jewish Food
08:18 - Yiddish Language in modern days
10:23 - The story of the Literature professor Roman Fain and his experience in Yiddish
In 1924, the unemployment rate among Jews exceeded 30%, partially as a result of pogroms (attacks on Jews in the Russian Empire) but also as a result of the policies of the USSR, which prohibited them from being craftspeople and small businessmen. With the goal of getting Jews back to work to be more productive members of society, the government established the committee for the agricultural settlement of Jews. The Soviet government entertained the idea of resettling all Jews in the USSR in a designated territory where they would be able to pursue a lifestyle that was "socialist in content and national in form". The Soviets also wanted to offer an alternative to Zionism, the establishment of Mandate of Palestine as a Jewish homeland.
The establishment of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in Birobidzhan in 1928 was ordered by Stalin only as an effort to strengthen the Far Eastern border region with an outpost, not as a favour to the Jews. The status of this region was defined shrewdly as an autonomous district, not an autonomous republic, which meant that no local legislature, high court, or government post of ministerial rank was permitted. It was an autonomous area, but a bare frontier, not a political center.

I am very impressed! You do an excellent work, showing to us in Europe (and elsewhere) such areas, people and thoughts we never learned about before. I think you are a very courageous and also a quite educated person with a strong interest to bring people from all over the world together - via the UA-cam media. Thank you! This is something we really need nowadays.

The Jews were also expecting a prophet in the Arabian deserts as it was mentioned in the their Scriptures but they weren't expecting him to be from the Ishmaelite although it was clearly mentioned that God will glorify the Ishmaelites in the future. But still they rejected and opposed the Prophet (PBUH) because he wasn't a Jew from among themselves.
      Isaiah 42:11
Let the desert and its cities lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar( children of Ishmael/Arabs) inhabits; let the habitants of Sela (in hebrew means Rock) sing for joy, let them shout from the top of the mountains.
Genesis 17:20, KJV: "Behold, I have blessed Ishmael, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation."(Arabs)
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.” (Deuteronomy 18:18) where is this prophet?
“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him” (Deuteronomy 18:19). It is well-known that every surah (chapter) of the Qur’an (except At-Tawbah 9) should start by: bismillah ir-rahman ir-rahim (In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful).
“And he said, the Lord came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them.” (Deuteronomy 33:2) Mount Paran is the area located between the mountains of Abu-Qubays, Qi`an, and Hira’ in Makkah.
The coming prophet would be illiterate, as was Muhammad (peace be upon him): “And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, ‘Read this, I pray thee’ and he saith, ‘I am not learned.'” (Isaiah 29:12)
In the song of Solomon the Word Muhammad (SAW) is mentioned as Muhammadim (We Muslims use Muhammadin) and both in Hebrew and Arabic it is a title not a name meaning likeable. In Arabic it also means "praiseworthy" and the other meaning in Hebrew is sweet.
It became the most used name in Islamic history but it was a title at first and the other name given to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was Ahmed.

Shalom from Israel. Thanks for this nice video. Makes me want to visit there. God willing, I'll do it.
Jews do speak also today Yidish. Observant Jews. It's their mother tongue, or mame lushen, as called in Yidish.
Actually, it was also mine, when born, although not to an observant family (although years ago I turned to be an observamt Jew).
My father was born in Poland, my mother in Bessarabia, and they spoke with each other Yidish, which is the language that connected all European Jews.
I came to the Land of Israel as a baby, and here we spoke Hebrew, but I kept speaking Yidish with my grandmother (my babushka :-)
Yidish is the neshume langugae (translated to English: the soul language).
I still can speak it, although not fluently, because my main language is Hebrew since I was a baby.
Yes, Yidish is a German dialect. Because of it, I can express myself in German in a way people will basically understand what I say, and vice versa - I can understand basically what's is said in German.
Again, thanks for this interesting video.
    May God bless you!

The fact Jews in other places on the globe spoke, Ladino for instance, or Arabic - is another fact. Judaism is not dependent on Yiddish, but on the Holy langauge - the lamgauge in which the world was crtead and the Torah given. An absolutely excellent interview with the Jewish fellow in the striped shirt. I'm not a Jew, I live in the US regardless my understanding of German culture, and politics during WW I - WW II lines up precisely as he explained. During the later half of the 19th century, German kings, Prussian Kings turned to Jewish money managers/bankers to help them manage money to be prepared to wage war. The Jews were very successful in their role as bankers to the kings. Hitler drew the wrong conclusions from the association of the Jewish bankers, every other conclusion, and decision he made.

That is true, but the question then becomes: "How did a small minority outgroup outperform Europeans in their own countries?". The answer everybody accepts is that they were simply more intelligent. This is actually an impossibility. All you have to do is compare the %'s of Jews and Germans living in Germany in the earlier 20th century. To outperform ethnic Germans and attain the degree of control and influence they had over German society would require the average Jew living in Germany to have an IQ of ~300, which is of course impossible (even if we're conservative and say that the average middle/upper-class German (i.e., bankers, scholars, academics, etc.) probably had an IQ of ~120, there is still an enormous IQ deficit needed to be filled for such a small minority outgroup to be able to attain nearly as much influence and power over Germany, and Europe as a whole. The "Jews just outperform Europeans because they're smarter" argument is therefore completely false based on how few there were living in Germany at the time (compared to ethnic Germans). And FYI; I've no political sympathies or agenda to pedal; I just cannot believe people still refuse to question this stuff or think about it logically.

Sholem Aleichem was born in Ukraine at the time being part of the pre Soviet Russian empire. His stories about Tevye the milkman who lived in the country side surrounding Kiev were the inspiration behind the classic film Fiddler On The Roof and its iconic song "If I were a rich man" which originally in Yiddish was "If I was Rothschild" which was also later picked up by Gwen Stefani in her hit song "If I was a rich girl" which until this day is still being sung and danced to by clueless millenials most of which probably have no idea who Sholem Aleichem is, or Tevye, or Yiddish, or Gwen Stefani.

Stalin was not such a complete idiot: why go to some mythical (then not even existing) Israel, if you can build a kind of Israel in the middle of nowhere near China and control all the Jews of the Empire of Evil. It was a good thing our forefathers did not fall for that lure and left for the promised land from that cursed place.

As opposed to nothing. You say simply Russia, how about that? Putin doesn't own Russia. I know many people in the West have the hope that after he's gone Russia will return to the 90s and the plundering by the West can resume. They'll be disappointed though, that train left the station long time ago.
