Live from the experimental project "Pneuma* Intoxicated" that combined music of Scriabin and Busoni, films by Murnau and Hans Richter, writings by Goethe and Nietzsche and light design. Presented in the Sir Jack Lyons Theatre at the Royal Academy of Music.
This is the second piece from the show: Busoni's dark Sonatina seconda (1912) synthesised with the film collage from Murnau's "Faust" (1926).
Murnau's film follows the story of Faust who makes a pact with the devil in exchange for youth and knowledge. It will end tragically when Faust seduces a young girl named Gretchen, then abandons her and she will be eventually die in the inquisitional fire after killing their child. This narrative line is, however, only one of many threads in Goethe's work.
Busoni quoted Nietzsche from his book 'Beyond Good and Evil':
"I could imagine a music whose rarest magic should consist in its complete divorce from Good and Evil -- only that its surface might be ruffled, as it were, by a longing as of a sailor for home, by certain golden shadows and tender frailties".
Designed and performed by Olga Stezhko.
