I'm a 60 year old gay woman and remember well when this came out in 2012. The world was so much harder for gay people then. (But easier than our sisters and brothers 20, 40, 60 years before that.) People (especially straight people) just weren't often outwardly supportive so that this song meant so much. Marriage Equality passed in 2015. This song helped open the conversation around acceptance.

It was a conversation that needed to be had, and in the current climate STILL needs to be had. Thanks for the listen!

I am a 50 year old gay woman. I had just gotten married right before this song came out. I had to fly to a different state to get married because the state I live in it was not legal at the time. Only “domestic partnerships” were legal which we did have. My “niece” sent this song to me saying “Auntie you have to listen to this song. You will love it. I love you” and she was right what an amazing song. I came out late in life. Was married had 2 kids the whole nine yards of the way I was raised. I met my wife and decided it was time for me to be me and to be happy so I came out. The only “regret” I have is that I didn’t allow myself to come out sooner but I don’t think it was time for me because I always knew I wanted to be a mom. It was absolutely freeing to be me. I always raised my boys from the day they were born you don’t judge on things like this (race, religion, sexual orientation, etc) so they were very accepting of my wife because they only cared that I was happy. I’m so glad things are slowly getting better. I don’t ever think it will be fully accepted but like the song says “it a damn good place to start”
