Instead of writing a long scrolling introduction to try and justify the game in the Star Wars universe, they should have been honest and wrote: "Yes, I know this is stupid, but just go have fun. - George".
To be fair, a genre like Tekken was what people called a "beat-em up" back then. Which is what you are doing, beating people up. Today, a "beat-em up" is used for games like Streets of Rage, while Tekken is now referred to as a "fighting game".
I'd like to remind you all: Capcom approached LucasArts with the idea of making a 3D Star Wars Fighting game, and they turned it down to make this. That Capcom Star Wars project later became Star Gladiator.
Tokyo Movie Shinsha approached Lucasfilm to work on one of the Star Wars cartoons in the 1980s (Droids and Ewoks), but he went with Nelvana instead. TMS did create a short pilot animation that the public has never seen. I only know of this because Marc Scot Zicree mentioned it in this video about the cartoon Mighty Orbots.
Part of me really wonders what could have been if they just went with Capcom in the first place... and if Capcom would have included Ryu as a guest fighter, just because they could.
This game really captured my imagination as a kid and was my first exposure to star wars expanded universe characters like Mara Jade. Also it was the first point i really became aware of Boba Fetts actual name. Also seeing Leia with a double bladed lightsaber was pretty mind blowing at the time.
All the secret characters made some great memories, and that final battle with Vader (and then Mara) will be cemented into my brain forever. Something about the horrible graphics made it iconic to my child self
Capcom actually went to LucasArts around this time with an offer to make a Star Wars fighting game etc But LucasArts declined, and instead went and made this. Oh what could've been.
Imagine if this game were like Tobal and had a plethora of SW characters like how the original action figures covered every little obscure alien and stormtrooper
Correction: It's a fighting game / fighter. Not a beat em' up. Beatemups are sidescrollers where you wail on mobs to progress, like Simpsons Arcade, Streets of Rage, or Alien vs. Predator Arcade. This is just a traditional fighting game.

Before we actually owned a PSX, we rented one from blockbuster with two games. This and Mega Man Legends. I have a fondness for both, but for VERY different reasons.
As a devoted fan of the tekken series at the time, and a lover of Star Wars, I was honestly surprised, back in the ps1 era games, there weren’t many SW titles that really mattered aside of course my favorite The Phantom Menace or Jedi battles, so I had quite the fun playing it! Felt clunky sure, but it was always fun playing it with your friends and a breath of fresh air.. So for me, despite of its quality, and after all these years; it still holds a part of my heart, call me nostalgic 😝
Amazing video! I love your sense of humor and your content overall. Recently I found that you created the meme with the "Ultra Action Guys". So relatable! 😂 This channel should receive more attention from the algorithm, as the content is excellent. Keep up the good work and I'm sure you will get the recognition you deserve! 🙂
I loved this game as a kid. I think it was probably my first Star Wars game I played, when I went over to a friend's house. (Or it was Shadows of the Empire.)
While I definitely don't think this is a good game I do have a soft spot for it in my heart and I still own my copy. It's definitely flawed and undeniably clunky but it's just so fun playing as Return of the Jedi era Star Wars characters whacking the crap out of each other with weak lightsabers and unfair long-distance weapons
Your work is incredible and I wonder if one day, will you talk about the Disney Infinity 3.0 Star Wars playsets, to continue your exploration of Star Wars games in which you are very well engaged?
This was in the 4 pack of games that we got for Christmas ‘97 when my brothers and I originally got a ps1. We were blown away! I’m very nostalgic it- easy to play, good sound, a totally inoffensive Star Wars game. To this day, to me, it’s at least a 7/10.
Would love to see you cover Star Wars Pinball. I think it's one of the most underrated Star Wars video games, probably because it's "just pinball". But they're great tables with a lot of love for the franchise and something like 20 tables with everything from movie and show adaptations to character-based tables to some really deep cuts, such as a table based on Star Wars action figures.
My brothers and I used to love this game. Absolutely understand how horridly it played with the ringouts and the lack of sense of being hit by a lightsaber and not losing a limb, however it was one of the only games at the time where you could battle as Star Wars characters to any great degree and as the sole purpose. To really play as Luke whipping around with a lightsaber (and ultimately hurling it with the force as his special move), Vader shooting force lightning or Boba Felt with his flamethrower and jetpack. For that value, being a kid with limited options, it was superb. I, for one, adored when it got a mention in 'Solo'.
I've always wanted to play this game as a kid. Had the demo when they gave out those like 16 game demos. Never got to it tho. But I did find Armored Core from those demos and loved that series since
I think the fact that they made a Star Wars fighting game like this is admirable, and the opening montage is cool. And it’s neat how many character were included
I remember being flabbergasted when Teräs Käsi was name dropped in the Solo movie. I thought "did Disney just canonize that godawful PS1 game?!" Fun fact: all of the incidental characters were incorporated into what was official (now Legends) canon. Arden Lyn was an Emperor's Hand for a time, and Hoar, Thok and the random Stormtrooper (all of them Force sensitive) were her students. Lyn was also involved in the Zaarin Insurrection, boarding Palpatine's Star Destroyer over Coruscant and capturing him during Grand Admiral Zaarin's attempted coup before it was ultimately foiled by the arrival of loyalist Imperial forces headed by Darth Vader, Thrawn and Tie pilot Maarek Stele.
I still remember my friend's younger brother getting grounded after playing this with him. Kept telling me to not do anything, because he wanted me to be his punching bag while he tried random button combos. Whenever he used a super move, I would just side step away 😁 He got so angry he cursed me out, which his mother was not pleased to hear
Han's victory dialogue combined with the dialogue Flandrew gave Luke... I liked the passive agressive vibes there. I'd also like to see Flandrew review the Capcom Star Gladiator games now, i.e the games Capcom made when Lucasarts turned down their pitch to make a 3D Star Wars fighter.
I thought I knew pretty much all Star Wars games. But I don't think I ever heard of this one. But luckily it seems like I didn't miss out on much growing up...
Drew I’ve been working so hard I forgot to watch your last video I’m sorry. So hard I crapped my pants at work just so I could go home early and now all the boys call me shitty
It 100% is. Played this game on the ps2 via backwards compatibility back in the day. I nor anyone else could figure out how to use the lightsabers or the blasters. It was always frustrating.
Ok but another shot at a Star Wars fighting game would be genuinely awesome, it could even go the Dragon Ball FighterZ route of like when you do a canon matchup like say Luke vs Vader on Bespin you get a small cutscene playing out scenes of that fight or stuff like that
I had this, Tekken 3, & Soul Blade growing up. My friends and I played the hell out of all of them, and at the time it didn't feel any worse than Soul Blade (which spawned the Soul Calibur series).
100%, it's been my dream for awhile. Smash bros style would be perfect for Star Wars with Jedi Double jumps and Jetpacks... Could have some awesome stages. Anytime I play Smash Bros I wish it was Star Wars.
I actually would love to see another crack at a Star Wars fighting game. Especially since the movies/shows have expanded on the characters and locales on offer. As for worst Star Wars game, definitely not. Perhaps most wasted potential, but not the worst.
I had a love-hate relationship with this game. I loved the premise, taking our beloved characters and some generic characters and putting them into a fighting game. But the execution was poor: primarily with the game speed. I think the combo system was a little on the short end but I think the fact that inputs are so slow make them even worse. I loved this game because graphically the charcters and the environment looked good (at the time), I liked being able to switch Luke into his Return of the Jedi outfit by hitting select on his model. The difficulty is pretty high if you don't try cheesing the game (if you put it on hard), although you have to be ready for the computer to mercilessly try to juggle you or push you out of the ring. I do think they did try their best with this game at the time due to the detail and color of character models and the background, but also because the sound design was good. It may not have a story mode which would have enhanced it, but an arcade mode with unlockable cutscenes and characters was par for the course. They might have made more success with a game like this if it were strictly made for an arcade, with better hardware or at least hardware that they know how to code for, compared to just trying to jump into PS1's code.
My first EVER video game as a child. Got it with my first ps1. I LOVED IT. Looking back I see objectively why it was terrible, but as a 90s child obsessed with Star Wars, this was epic.
Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi what could have been a cool Star Wars fighting game but we wouldn’t have that till Star Wars episode III Revenge Of The Sith and Soul Calibur IV.
It's kinda funny how I hate fighting games but grew up with and loved both Dragon Ball GT Final Bout AND Star Wars Masters of Teras Kasi as a young lad.
At the time it was definitely a novelty. Having all the star wars characters in a 3d fighting game was a great thing to see. Fighting game wasn't anyone's obvious choice, but at the time, although virtua fighter it was not, it was a good enough time. Me and my friends put plenty of hours into it, and even today it has a lot more charm than many other worse star wars games.
There are plenty of much worse Star Wars games out there. But I think the reason this game sticks out so much is because of how much *potential* it had to be good. The graphics were great for the time it came out, the sound design was fantastic, and fighting games seem like such a no-brainer for a setting where all the biggest moments in the movies are big lightsaber duels. The fact that it plays so, so badly in spite of all of that is what makes this game stick in the memories of fans. And it honestly wouldn't take too many changes to make it a much, much better experience. If the controls were a bit more responsive, if the stun from when characters are knocked to the ground didn't last so egregiously long, and if the enemy AI were just a little more responsive, it could have been a fantastic game for its time. Instead, what we got was a barely playable mess. I'd honestly love to see another take at this concept, modernized and with tighter, more fluid gameplay. Because of this game's failure, we've gotten exceedingly few Star Wars fighting games. We're long overdue for Star Wars to get, say, the Dragon Ball Fighterz treatment.
For some reason watching this I was reminded of xmen mutant academy. I feel like that also stemmed from the same ilk of tekken clones. Man, lots of nostalgia with that one.
I can't share my memories of this wretched game. That would make the 1000s of hours of therapy I spent learning to repress them meaningless. This is right up there with yodas desktop adventures levels of ick.
I played this on a PlayStation demo disc back in the day. It definitely achieved its goal of wowing kids with the whole "It's a fighting game, but with STAR WARS characters!" gimmick, because I was mesmerized by it at first. Looking at it now, I probably would've grown to hate it rather quickly if I had pestered my parents to buy me the full game.
Another Star Wars product with a name that to German speakers brings up really weird associations, just like Boba "fat": "Käse" means *cheese* and "Käsi" is its diminutive, like using it as a name for a person and then belittling that person on top. Something like "lil' cheesy", I suppose. Definitely a title worth of Darth "father". What is it with George Lucas and the German language..?
Yes, and that's why I love it. It's unbalanced, sluggish, cheesy...and an asthetic time capsule of awesome if you're an OG trilogy fan like me. The ad campaign for this produced some beautiful artwork back then, too...
I think it offers some daft fun, and it’s a good laugh with friends. It’s not particularly frustrating to play and it’s not as hateful as something like Flight of the Falcon which seems like it was made specifically to drain all the childlike glee you might have for Star Wars completely out of your body
I remember for my birthday when I was little I got this game and Star Wars episode 1 Jedi power battles. lol I had fun with this game as a kid but I eventually played Jedi power battles way more after a few days 😁
When a Star Wars game randomly decides to use the Swedish letter "Ä" in the name. It just sounds weird reading the name out loud, knowing full-well that the person who picked the name probably didn't understand how that letter sounds. "Ä" is pronounced sort-of like "AE", and sort-of like the letter "A" in the English word "station".
I remember going out of school, seeing this pirated game on a street peddler, buy it and play it with a friend. We laughed our ass off and never played it again.,
I feel like a Star Wars fighting game could be really fun if done right. A SoulCalibur-esque weapon-based fighting game letting you play as all of your favorite Jedi and Sith as well as other characters from throughout the Star Wars universe who wield melee weapons, with each character having their own unique set of special moves. I think Bandai Namco had the right idea including Star Wars characters in SoulCalibur IV, even if some parts of it could have been thought out better (*cough* *cough* Yoda *cough*)
Before I even clicked on the video I thought "Oh, Masters of Teras Kasi".

But then he would have to repeat that with The Clone Wars novels, Rebels and the sequels, the joke would be lost quickly

I remember asking my dad if he remembered this game, and he'd just get really angry.
I think the funniest thing about this is that Teras Kasi is now canon to the movie universe because it was mentioned in Solo
It wasn’t. Either I have bad memory or you mix it up with War of the Bounty Hunters.
The technic Teras kasi is canon, this game isn't.

It definitely achieved its goal of wowing kids with the whole "It's a fighting game, but with STAR WARS characters!" gimmick, because I was mesmerized by it at first. Looking at it now, I probably would've grown to hate it rather quickly if I had pestered my parents to buy me the full game.
I played that demo disc, too. I was thinking of buying the game until I played that demo!
Probably find something worse on a old system
Ubisoft be like...hold my beer
I dont need to talk when I have the force 0:16
Another great sunday with flandrew❤
Please compare more 007, spiderman and Lego games.
I enjoyed Masters of Teras Kasi. It was interesting. If it continued on, it could have been like Soulcalibur but only with Star Wars characters
I loved playing this game at my friend's house, but mostly just because Star Wars
I think it offers some daft fun, and it’s a good laugh with friends. It’s not particularly frustrating to play and it’s not as hateful as something like Flight of the Falcon which seems like it was made specifically to drain all the childlike glee you might have for Star Wars completely out of your body
I remember for my birthday when I was little I got this game and Star Wars episode 1 Jedi power battles. lol
I had fun with this game as a kid but I eventually played Jedi power battles way more after a few days 😁
Lol I still can't get over that the title litelary means "steel hand" in Finnish :,D
Lol Han Solo's face in the charecter selection looks like he heard something really sus
At least there were no loot boxes or micro transactions.
I saw the thumbnail and immediately knew what game y'all were talking about
I remember going out of school, seeing this pirated game on a street peddler, buy it and play it with a friend.
