- Hert's effort to build the perfect daily driver is almost over! He's taken time away from his 2JZ GS300 project to shift the energy towards his 4AGE AE86 Toyota Corolla. It gets fresh RS Watanabe Wheels, Falken Tires, Seibon Carbon Hood and an extra cool Koyo Radiator, and a full on spa treatment!

One of my welding teachers told me if you spend more time grinding and cleaning up your welds then actually welding, then your a grinder not a welder. Haha

Miller 220 is an awesome welder. The guys that trained me, Earlbeck Gas and Tech, used them for everything. They do all of the certifications for Harley Davidson’s guys so I’d call that a glowing endorsement! Welding is an awesome skill to have, good on you for learning.

Get the angle of your torch correct,
split the 90° angle in half and run the torch at a 45° angle. Also I personally like to c motion or circles patterns.
Working on my many cars that I don’t have a need for while wearing crocs is my dream pastime. I would also like to get ice cream while do that as well. Can’t beat the nostalgic taste of ice cream truck treats.
Not gonna lie, those welds, for a beginner, are no joke good. There’s always room for improvement, but that’s like building cars. Always strive to get better. Love it Hert

@@ryansilich8269 truth. Just make sure the blacktop has a good ecu. I bought ryan literals 20v Corolla and the ecu had a leaky resistor and it bogged a little before 5k rpm but that thing ROARED at full rip.
Or just go standalone management and no worries.
The pure BDE of rocking the blue socks and crocks is just mesmerising

Hert, dude, that Corolla looks awesome just like it is. IDK, I like the Watanabes in dark colors. Beautiful car.
Also gatta be conscious of the thickness of the welded material/attached parts. You may want to run a 2-3” bead and let it cool before starting again. Also helps you slow each bead down a bit then you’re not chasing a giant molten pool
tip from a welder doing this for a living for 12 years. MIG welding with solid wire you should push and not pull like you did in the video, it ill get you better wetting and much better looking weld. But you can still do both, pulling yield more penetration usually but a rounder weld and pushing a little less penetration but a much flatter a good looking weld. Keep at it practice makes perfect !
That color combo is sick now with the new hood.
Hert , tip on the mig, if you’re right handed start on the right side going to the left. And a easier way to stack dimes is just a whip it technique instead of doing circles it’s a lot easier and comes out so much nicer.
Suggestion, wear in ear plugs while welding to help prevent any hot spatter from bouncing into your ear canal, have heard stories from coworkers about people having eardrums damaged from it.
If it's spattering that much then you might want to check your settings or clean the metal better
Carbon hoods are awesome. Best way to shave weight off the front end, especially on older cars. Plus the vent really helps keep fresh air going through the engine bay, and helps with cooling whether you are sitting at idle, or not. I have a vented seibon on my ep3 as well, only it is so old it has no clearcoat left.. all about the patina yo!
I feel like this is capable of being Herts show queen. Car is soooo clean
Let the weld puddle wet out, if it’s set right you can see the puddle form slowly it’s also easy to keep it your arm steady, always be comfortable welding just to lay a perfect bead if you keep the puddle uniform across the plate it’s come out good but also keep gun angle consistent

What it do Hert! I’ve been binge watching most of the Hoonigan channel playlists since the quarantine started and it has been keeping me sane up here in NorCal. I noticed that you guys love Cactus Cooler, that gave me flashbacks of my time as an Engineman in the Navy when I was stationed in SD. It was a rarity that our ship got those sodas and I used to drink them to keep cool in the hot engineering spaces. I was able to find some Cactus Cooler up here and I cleared the shelves of them. Now I drink one each time I watch a Hoonigan video. Btw you should call the AE86 the “Corolla Virus” aka the “Kung-Flu Panda”.

Those welds are really good! Just slow down. 😎 Slower left to right speed and slower circle drawing. You don't even have to do circles either. Cresent moons or you can go in and out of the puddle too.
When youre welding that kind of stuff you dont need to do anything but push dont go up and down or circles makes it alot easier to be consistent and they can look good still

Try pushing the cherry in circle movements up the hill on your wielding if you can keep it rolling it makes a nicer looking wield in just in circle movements

Hert... you're not a bad first time welder. Those look pretty damn good. Good test is a butt joint, put one end in a vise and smash the top over. If it bends and doesn't go across the room... itll be a good weld ;)
I’d buy that 4ag to help offset the cost for that 20v. It would be a plus for me to have your old engine too! You’ve done an amazing job. Hope to finish my 86 and see you at a meet one time.

Man, the Wats are perfect, but I honestly think that's just a little too much stretch in the rear. Mad respect for the fella that mounted those though! And as long as Hert digs the fitment, thats all that matters. His builds always evolve and come out super sick.
Hello Hert From personal experience I can tell you disaster is right around the corner . I see a engine on the ground with intake and exhaust ports not covered. A blower and intake on the bottom self of the bench not covered . it is amazing how things can fly across the shop . Or fall off a bench and find their way right into those holes .
welds looking good bro. like you said a tad fast, you can see where the pool didn't penetrate all the way on the edges, all you got to do is just make sure that puddle seeps in there. otherwise pretty good and consistent, which is really what matters.
Move the wire back and forth in a "C" shape slightly while laying your bead. Works well if you have a tendency to move too fast

I had to learn to speed weld with a Lincoln MIG welder. I was supposed to check 50-plus welds and fix the welds that wear bad every 36 seconds. Luckily with robots it was always the same welds that were then main repairs. I was a natural and never really got trained because everybody thought I already knew how to weld. No safety training, no wire speed training, no voltage training. I just had to wing it from the beginning.

personally not a huge fan of the slammed look, but the corolla is looking really good, not a big fan of orange, but he really pulls it off with the two tone look, overall a sweet looking build

I definitely vote yes for the 20v swap with ITBs!!! They sound so good. Also, if you do that, PLEASE paint the engine bay lol. Either black or orange/copper to match the car. I think black engine bay and copper valve cover on the engine would look sick.

Pro tip from someone who isn't a pro. Do a spot weld before you run a line of weld. The spot weld will warm up the wire and tip, it helps start your wel line.
Food in the beard though, is a nice touch!
