The heat actually helped shapovalov's topspin a lot and Nadal's backhand was not particularly effective but as always Nadal adjusted when it mattered.
The heat was a factor and helped both in their serving but Nadal missed numerous opportunities in set3 that didn't help his cause. The double faults were because he was committed to shortening points, but he will tone it down a bit I think

You can see the same pattern with Nadal as he ages as happened to Federer... it's not the peak level that drops but the ability to physically sustain very high levels for long stretches is an issue. Last 3 majors...Loss to Tsistsipas, loss to Djoker and near loss yesterday...all after great starts. In the past, Nadal would basically never lose if he won the first set playing really well. But the ability to stay consistent ...whatever the cause...just seems to drop with age.

With regards the "career high" DFs, the "test sample" from 2021 is very, very small. 7 tournaments in total, "early" losses for him, so less matches AND if his foot was an "issue" throughout, I think that might not be an issue going forward - if he plays a "usual" season and the foot has been "eased" significantly. Hoping the "lack of energy" issue is also related to only playing 14 events in two years, plus recent Covid infection. The QF match, could therefore HURT or HELP, depending on the covid "relation." This was pure survival tennis for Nadal after the first couple of sets. He had almost nothing left but used all his experience and tennis IQ along with flashes of brilliance. And was helped by Shapo’s errors. Nadal’s first serve level was at its worst. I can’t see Nadal going all the way. He’s way off his best. Plus his fitness and durability isn’t what it used to be. He could need another two 5 set matches. And I can’t see him pulling that off. And todays stomach issue didn’t look good. I didn’t think he’d get through it but he just about pulled it off. Even if he beats Berretini I think Medvedev would be a step too far. A shame Nadal only got back from injury so recently.

I agree very very few players could have done what he did there. He is an absolute warrior and that’s why I’ve been a big fan since 2005. However that match could easily have taken too much out of him. For Nadal to win this AO he would need to first beat Berretini in straight sets. Then he would need to play his absolute best in the final. On top of that he would have to hope the opponent has gone through a 5 setter and is tired. I say all this cos of two reasons. 1. He’s just come back from injury and has very little tennis under his belt. 2. He is simply not physically anywhere near what he was at his prime. He doesn’t have the legs and the endurance. His age is now definitely a factor. But I hope I’m wrong..

Correct. It was a heat stroke that was causing him breathing problem which was causing pain in the pit of the stomach. Nadal talked about it during the Spanish part of the after match press conference.
English is my second language and I had to find the medical term of having pain “en la boca del estómago”. So I can see why Nadal couldn’t explain it in English the same way he did in Spanish. Has he done a literal translation, he would have said, pain in the mouth of his stomach, so he went with stomach issue, which is not 100% accurate. 😂

Much like Djokovic v Zverev last year Gill misses the forest for the trees. Shapo layed it out after the match and the dubious break that Nadal took to recharge after being "destroyed" in the 3rd and 4th sets. It was purely a conditioning issue (unless someone wants to claim he'll still be injured in his next match?) He flat out iced Shapovalov with a Tsitsipas length break pure and simple and secured an early break in the fifth, then with nerves settled and batteries recharged served lights out. Djokovic did worse in the 2020 final after the third set with an even longer break. Both had been physically destroyed by the play of their opponents and abused the rules to recover. Gill of course with his sycophantic leanings for the Big 3 completely ignores theses obvious events that completely changed both matches. Kudos to Shapo for laying out the rampant bias at the Australian Open once again. Nadal said it himself, “I was completely destroyed. Tough day. Very warm,” Nadal said. “At the beginning of the match I was playing great (but) Denis is very talented, very aggressive. He was serving huge - especially the second serve.
“I think I had my chances at beginning of the third. I didn’t get it. I started to feel a little bit more tired...." Also love that Nadal gets a complete pass for choking a break away with a double fault in this match. Nadal and Djokovic both did it in their "all time great" (lol) RG semi. He double faults more because he serves more aggressively and then when the extreme pressure is on he crumbles like clockwork. Shapo has a far more aggressive game and held his nerve wonderfully and would have easily won this match had it not been for the condoned abuse of the rules. Icing players with breaks is dirty pool and something Federer would never do. I thought tennis had learned with the Tsitsipas situation, but the slams (Tiley the worst) continue to undermine the credibility of the sport. Another great match badly tarnished by rules abuses.

totally agree I do think that the rules like we have seen many times have been abused definitely the big 3 get preferential treatment. Shapo had his chances and just did not have that closing piece or let the other issues around the game take him out - like the whole corruption piece - do Big 3 get special treatment - maybe....yes...ok...so what...deal with it as part of the game/sport...and get on with overcoming your own stuff and the stuff around you. Lost respect for Rafa. That was terrible. His tactics were appalling. Medical time out and then another bathroom break. Shapo ready serve and Nadal is towelling off for ever

@@sureshbabusri9331 Are you f'n kidding. Give your head a shake. Rafa has been pushing the clock boundaries every match, alligning bottles, not ready when the other person is ready to serve. It's been a point of discussion for a decade. You pick one match from federer?? Give me a break. I like rafa...a lot. Federer might have been an arrogant prick when he was younger....and maybe you don't like him. But he's at the blocks ready to return serve consistently

@@sureshbabusri9331 The chair umpire called "time" and Nadal was nowhere to be found. Did you even watch the match. Nadal just admitted this and said "they usually give us more time". Nadal on 6 different occasions started his serve motion when the clock was zero. He was not ready when Shapo was at the service line. Nadal easily could had 2 warnings and a point taken.

Nadal refused to have Carlos B as a referee for a long time. The time wasting is sickening. I agree with Denis Shapovalov.
