Rafa is the greatest problem solver in the history of the sport. It doesn't matter whatever the situation he is in he always find the ways to come out of it and yesterday he did the same.
Whenever matches goes to 5 seter against players like Rafa and Nole you should know that they are having more chances to win the match because I don't know how but still they were able to have some strength store in them and use that in those final moments.
Rafa winning tie breaker in 10-4 and nole winning last set 6-2 is great example of that.
Also when rafa played that 5th set and tie breaker he made less mistakes at crucial point than fritz. The amount of experience this two have in their arsenal always make the difference so it's very difficult to beat them.
But one thing which I can't understand that how can rafa fought so many problems at the same time and yet make it through against such a great opposition.
That's make him better than Nole because the intensity he played with all those matches are unbelievable. Nole is more expressive than Nadal. When he is feeling pressure he get that out by yelling and sometimes smashing the racquet but rafa don't react in that way. He keeps all of those emotions in his head and always deal with it in his own way which is far more impressive.
I am sure as long as this two will keep playing we will witness more and more such phenomenal performances.

One thing no-one is mentioning which was a big tell for the abdomen injury: Nadal didn’t grunt for 95% of the points. I’ve never ever seen him so quiet. He just silently smacked balls like Federer does. It was clear that he felt that the effort of doing so would hurt him too much.

Fritz blew it really, Nadal was there for taking but he just didn't have the mentality. The same happened to him at AO vs injured Djokovic. That's the difference between top 3 players in history and the rest, they are not only great players but their mentality is on another level and that is what makes them Goats. Unfortunately looking at these new gen players you can't see a player with that mentality. Medvedev losing AO final where he was a favourite after being a 2:0 up or Tsitsipas doing the same at RG is proving this. Alkaraz is the only player from the next gen who looks like he can have that mentality to be a multiple GS champion.

Could say the same about sinner yesterday . Y’all guys clearly don’t play tennis, it’s a mental game after all . If you choke it’s mostly bc of the pressure of your opponent . Rafa was clearly the better player from the baseline . Fritz completely depended on his serve and rafas weak serve today to make points.

I generally agree but wouldn’t lump in Medvedev with the likes of Zverev, Tsitsipas, etc. in terms of mental frailty…Medvedev destroyed Djokovic at USO21 and nearly came back from two sets down to beat Nadal at USO19. And his level in the last three sets of AO22 wasn’t that much worse than the first two sets (other than those horrific drop shots), it was mostly a case of Nadal raising his level.

Nadal is seriously finding his forehand when he needs it most this year. It’s honestly incredible. Seems when he finds he’s about to lose or has an opportunity to win, his forehand becomes a flat lazer that lands on any line it can find, whether it be the baseline or the sidelines.

Most of the comments below complained about Fritz's letting the win slip thru his fingers. Few praise Nadal's struggle which is above the expectation. Truly, he consistently performs a kind of resilience that makes his opponents daunted to the roots. You don't feel it simply because you don't have the experience of being out there in real competition. Sorry to repeat it that you can't really comment unless you have been out there in some degree of real competition which requires serious mental n psychological preparation.

I think rafa might have found the way for him to get comfortable on grass for the rest of the tournament. To my eye, it seems he took his own pace off the ball, probably out of necessity. It felt like he made his swings alot more compact and was more content to redirect shots rather than power them through, somewhat like djokovic. I think he placed his shots really well as the match went on. I think he can continue with this style of play, because grass won't take much pace off his shots anyway, and players who can hit close to lines have a big advantage.

I see Fritz receiving a lot of praises for his heroic performance. sorry, but there was nothing heroic about it. if you are a top 10 player, and you have a 36 years old opponent who is so clearly struggling, I'm expecting your killer instinct to kick into high gear and finish to job. I think Fritz deserves the critics, because he should have won here. All I saw from him was the lack of killer instinct. He is incredibly talented but a little soft. If Rafa's serve speed dipped so much and was so slow, the obvious explanation for why he didn't lose the match: Fritz's return was sub par. There is no way a good returner doesn't take advantage constantly of that weak of a serve especially on grass.
Also yes, Nadal was compromised physically because of his serve, but from everywhere else on the court he was pretty good, meaning that injury wasn't as bad as, say: AO 2014 final where he barely could move. He has been in far worse conditions.

Despite having a very low serve speed, Nadal is still good at picking spots. His 2nd serve percentage is always high. But i agree, the returns should have been better, Taylor should have figured something out to put more returns into play. But let's bear in mind that Nadal was hitting very aggressively and was moving fritz left to right. And i noticed how well he was constructing points after playing a defensive shot, it was vintage Nadal defence to offence. It's a dangerous thing, but i think Nadal might have a very good chance in next two matches if he recovers and deploys these tactics .

true...although speed of serve was slower, it didnt look that way when it took off from the grass. And if he does play in the semis, he will think about using this serve speed (even if he recovers and can serve with greater speed). More guaranteed placement with slower speed for 1st serve, and higher first serve %)...and then, having the second serve available, using that same pace.

So I would say his normal average of 115 mph was being met on those points. I even saw a 119 mph on a break point I think it was at the end of the 4th. I also noticed Taylor missed way too many slow serves. Like 83-87 mph missed returns. Straight up, that can’t happen. Rafa being so close to the finish line looked like Rafa firing on all cylinders in the 5th. His movement and forehand were insane.

This is an extremely frustrating loss from the Fritz standpoint. His tactics was nothing short of atrocious. In this situation he needed to go aggressively to the Nadal backhand, as he was very CLEARLY compromised in his movement and effectiveness on that side, and finish at the net when necessary...game over! Pound him on the backhand side!..even with the cost of a few more errors. But as you said, his play at the net is a clear weakness, easy for Nadal to strategize against. He knew about the injury and stubbornly kept trying to compete, match after match. He said it went from a small tear to a really big one when we finally lost, and as a result it took months to heal instead of weeks. I have described this match to people who didn't want to sit through the four-plus hours as "a match between two variously injured players". Rafa and Novak have such an advantage over the younger players, with their wealth of experience affording them far more options in how to play under difficult circumstances. I can't imagine how Rafa could play Kyrgios with whatever abdominal injury he's sporting. And, supposing he did manage to win, he'd then have to face most likely Novak in the final. Previously he is loosing and them comes with really high intensity and wins it. Do you also observe the same and it looks like he is taking somethings which looks suspicious. Last year his body went away in FO Semis. Today he is one year older and endurance and intensity wise he is beating Djokovic and Medvedev and Zverev. Your thoughts on this?

Gill- the stats I saw said Taylor broke Rafa 8 times and RAF broke him 7 times. Are you sure 6 was the right number?😉 Great comments about Taylor’s legs… I think that was fair- very good.

I don't agree with the Fritz bashing. He did everything he could do. Losing to Nadal is nothing to be ashamed of. He is in good company- Novak just lost to Nadal at RG, Meddy lost to him at the '19 USO, '22 OA- That's a world #1 and 2 losing to Nadal. So everyone needs to lay off the judgement. This guy walked through the entire top 10 field in Australia after crutches, covid, heat stroke, stomach problems. Why must Fritz be made to feel like he's a terrible person for doing his best and falling short like everyone else? I respect Fritz for a Gallant Effort and I hope he picks himself up and tries again.
If you weren't playing Nadal on center court today, you don't know a thing about what it would've taken to beat him. You don't know. So lay off Fritz.

I think in the Nadal stayed in because he didn’t have to be at his best to beat Fritz Fritz in my opinion did not play that great even though the commentators said he was doing great he missed easy shots and he couldn’t even return Nadal‘s slower service if Nadal doesn’t get better there’s no way he’s going to win especially against Novak if he serves the way he did in this match to Novak it’s just gonna be brutal to watch if he even makes it to the final

Nadal's level of play in spite of his serve lacking power due to injury, was just unbelievable. He hit so many corners, incredible depth of shot, painted so many lines. Astounishing his level of play. Only a few points separated them. Nadal was better....barely.
I personally don't like Nadal's game but he is undeniably great.
My fervent hope is Novak and Nadal face off in the final and Novak beats Nadal like Nadal beat Novak in the French. Novak should win, he is the superior grass player and honestly, better than Fritz.

Djokovic's H2H record vs. Nadal is even: 2-2. How can you say he is superior to Rafa on grass ? If you want to find true superiority look and Rafa's H2H FO record vs, Djokovic (i.e., 8-2),
A healthy Rafa can beat Djokivic on grass. The issue is that Rafa is not 100 % healthy.

Gill these are wonderful mental and physical achievements to be sure. But I personally think it says more about their competition or lack their of. Given the same set of circumstances, I’d like to see Nadal come through against the likes of Connors, Sampras, Lendl or Becker to name just a few. These Next Gen group are basically tomato cans out there. I’ve never seen a generation not close to stepping up and at least challenging for the greatest tennis tournaments … even when their rivals across the court are noticeably injured and vulnerable.

evan shear, I am a huge Nadal fan, but I agree. The staying power of the Big Three is awesome. But the presence of the three GOAT candidates has masked the fact that there will be a very weak era when Fed, Rafa and Novak will finally retire. These youngsters are so used to lose against the Big Three at the slams that they are mentally not ready to cross the finish line even if they are very close. It's mind boggling how often they blow a solid lead against players who are so much older and in Nadal's case a clearly compromised player!
That said, Nadal won this match not only because Fritz blew it. He won because of his high tennis intelligence. He chose the tools which he still had and used them effectively. That Was very smart!

@@sabineb.5616 Well said and I agree with you. This has never happened in the Open Era where there are not at least one or two players unintimidated and ready to roll with the top brass (at the time). This New Generation has mentally lost before they take court.

@@evanshear5378 , I agree, and it's not pretty to watch. The Big Three and Murray, before his hip gave up, have been awesome and one-of-a-kind tennis players, and Nadal and Djokovic still are - but all of them have declined, which is totally natural at their by tennis standards advanced age. But their results at the slams don't reflect this decline at all! At least Nadal and Djokovic are as successful as ever! But to a certain degree they look still good because their opponents allow them to shine! Medvedev is the only young gun who managed to overcome this mental block when he beat last year an exhausted Djokovic in the USO final. But at the AO Medvedev was the clear favorite against Nadal who had just come back from a lengthy injury break and who wasn't even fully fit, yet - but somehow Daniil managed to blow a two-and-a-half set lead and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I have been a tennis fan for decades, but I cannot remember to have seen anything like this in previous eras.

I was very disappointed in Fritz's serving and I think that is why he lost. If Nadal can't find a way to overcome the injury and serve better against Kyrgios, I think Nadal will lose the semi-final because I think Kyrgios will serve substantially better than Fritz did.
