It sounds like a great idea, but I also would worry about my health if I were to simultaneously piss off Celtic / Rangers / Boca / River Plate / Fenerbahce / Galatasaray fans
I know the analysis was focused on english football but I’m surprised Leverkusen didn’t get a mention. The number of clutch goals they scored on their way to the title was a joke.
I think that if we consider clutch goals in the Champions League or another cup competition, the results will be very different. In cup competitions, goals in the last minutes will bring more titles.
Excellent video. I was wondering if there was going to be any mention of Bayer Leverkusens season last year due to their clutch reputation they built for themselves to win the league. Alas, no, so I decided to look into it myself. In total, by the definition outlined in this video, Leverkusen scored 15 total clutch goals last year, with 2 more a minute or two away from qualifying. 7 in the league, 2 in the cup, and 6 in the Europa League and both fringe options also coming in the Europa League. Given how many games they blew teams out and were simply way too good to require clutch moments, it’s crazy how they still managed to scored 7 Clutch goals, only 2 less than the best prem team ever in a league with 4 less games. What I found most fascinating was that they only had 1 clutch league goal before the new year, meaning they scored 6 clutch goals in their final 18 league games, they also had 1 clutch cup goal and 5 clutch European goals in 2024 alone for an absurd 12 clutch goals after Christmas. In short, Patrik Schick is my hero
I can't believe The Simpsons reference at 7:00. You are legitimately one of the best video makers I've come across in a while, ridiculously yet understatedly hilarious.
I love the niche you have in videos now! Awesome early history, hilariously serious cold wet paradox, theoretical impact stats, etc. This is how my brian works and you put it all together in a neat little package for my view pleasure. Keep it going!!
Great video once again!! Would love to see an analysis of the poor var decisions made last season or just in general, & to see who’s getting the harshest/lightest decisions against them. Keep up the good work
Love that idea, but I also don't want the channel burned to the ground in the comments! Thanks for watching, and hopefully more of the same coming soon!
To add a point, it’s important to remember that really good teams rarely find themselves in “clutch” situations. So if your team has a lot of “clutch” goals, thats not really a good indicator of performance.
Great vid, probably explains why I could never get into basketball, I don't understand how you could watch a sport where every match could effectively be decided by the flip of a coin. Anyway, I'd love to see clutch goals per premier league minute, or even clutch goals only scored after being subbed on compared to clutch goals having started the game. keep it up!
Personally I'd also throw out that a goal to increase the lead from 1 to 2, therefore killing the game off, should also be counted as a clutch goal. Great video!
Just cause I was curious, Bellingham had 4 clutch goals for Real Madrid last season following this metric: two against Barcelona, one vs Getafe and one vs Union Berlin. Not including 2 for England: 1 vs Belgium in a friendly and the one against Slovakia in the euros.
Extended Agueroooo mention plus a mention of Steph Curry within minutes of each other is like torture for a Rockets and Man United fan EDIT: just saw the Palmer meltdown as well lol
I think scoring a quick goal in the first 5 or 10 minutes against a superior opponent should count, because you're automatically giving your team a chance
hahahaha mate i fell out of my chair laughing at this vid, can't believe you snuck a simpsons reference in there too, great video keep up the great work!
@@RouteNone "klatschen", the verbal form, means "to clap", it describes "a flat object hitting something", "the sound such an object makes", "to applaude". Less formally, it is used for "spreading rumours, to gossip", it's a slang term for "beating someone up (in a rather brutal manner)". The first example of Klatsche being used as a football term i could find was from 1996, in "Digitales Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache" [Digital Dictionary of the German Language, dwds.de, by Mehmet Scholl, former Bayern player, then tv, then Dacia model]. I have the feeling it has been used before that, but started as a colloquial term, and therefore has not been recorded in the beginning. I did not know or hear the term "clutch" in German football. Apparently a Clutch here is a form of a handbag. The term for the mechanical device in cars is not used as a football term here. One could hear of a "Joker" [from the playing card, a substitution player with the known potential] "to turn a match", but the change could happen earlier, like right after the substitution.
While not a good indicator of success, I wonder as a Southampton fan how useful it is for PL survival. It felt like Le Tissier kept us up with clutch goals.
Makes sense that players on top teams don’t score many clutch goals-you can’t score one if you’re winning at the end of the game, which great teams usually are.
Adjusting for games played is good and all but not all players have the same "window" to score clutch goals in. If your team is leading at the end of the game, trailing by two goals or you got subbed off early etc. it is impossible to score a clutch goal no matter how clutch you may be. If you could isolate the "potential clutch" minutes a player has played you'd technically get an even more accurate picture, but im sure there would be massive sample size problems. Great video though love your work.
Basketball has their designated player for that scenario because theres only 5 players on the court for either side, they can forcefully create a spark of brilliance to steal it all by themselves. If the game was purely 2 forwards, 2 defenders and 1 goalkeeper playing football on a smaller pitch, we would have moments of brilliance at the dying minutes and the score would be 20-18 frequently. Because more players would be inclined to be a one-man army and create and seize an opportunity they carved out for themselves. No player ona pitch is expected to score if you put them in on the 90th minute, and if they were that good, they would have played since minute 1, and would have scored by now. Football has "moments" where one player triggers a collapse and leads to a goalscoring oppurtunity through a tackle, pass, drawing fouls, winning the header, dribbles and etc. Any and all action are designed to get it closer to the goal.
You should add in a variable on how valuable the 'clutch' goal was. If it's a mid-season prem game against a team you should beat then it's less valuable than a cup final or important game. AGUEROOOOOOOO would have maximum points, for example.
Would be interesting to do a manner similar to foolish baseball who uses “championship probability added” - how did a teams chance to win the league change from before the goal? For example agüero would be a 0%-100% jump (presumably) while a GW1 winner from aubameyang means next to nothing

Route None coming in clutch with a great video

I love the football manager style goal representations
Far too much time goes in to animating those, so glad people like them!
Seeing a Simpsons reference in the style of a Footgall Manager highlight is something I didn’t know I needed

“Homes under the hammersman” best description of any ex player ever 😂
Dion Dublin’s Dubeous reference

So good to hear about Michael Thomas' last minute winner. All I hear about is Aguero's, it so wrongly overshadows that one for sure.

John Kennedy in Fluminense had a fame of being a clutch goalscorer at the Libertadores 2023.

very surprised to not see Divock Origi in this video, definitely a massive clutch goalscorer across PL and CL

🔥Duran of Aston Villa is with zero doubt the clutch player of this season so far 😏

All in all needing a clutch goalscorer means your team was struggling.
Love the animation and the graphic style besides the obvious quality content. Too many ads tho, 4 ads in a 9 mins video lol

The German similar sounding word Klatsche [clutch+ə] describes a lost match, esp with a very clear or unexpected result.
That's fascinating - would love to know the etymology of that!
@@RouteNone "klatschen", the verbal form, means "to clap", it describes "a flat object hitting something", "the sound such an object makes", "to applaude". Less formally, it is used for "spreading rumours, to gossip", it's a slang term for "beating someone up (in a rather brutal manner)".

instead of looking at leagues perhaps the better competition to explore clutchness would be cup competitions where being clutch matters more
