  • It's been a while since I've hooked up one of the Yaesu 100w version FT1000 Mk5 Field units and boy, did the noise reduction remind me why Yaesu led the race for a while in the 90s. Yaesu kept this model alive for 10 years so if you were as confused as I was re 1990s or 2000+ manufacturer build date of the radio, quite understandable. Wikipedia says 1995 to 2005 for the MP series, which sounds pretty right. So it was quite a long run for Yaesu, and was their top tier prior to the FTDX9000 range. The actual manufacturer date of any individual radio can be resolved by the serial number plate which Yaesu have always had the way to interpret on the internet. Still got mine in its box, I purchased from POSNAV July 2005 and took to VK0, I recall learning, get the best receiver you can afford, and it was an awesome receiver. I had the privilege of using on some "big" antennas. Davis had seperate RX and TX antenna farms, a couple of km apart if that provides some perspective. What a performer, I just loved using this rig and it was a real pleasure amongst the pileup experience operating from VK0 and it left the R&S EK070 receiver in its wake when it came to noise handling.

You bring back great memories of the 2005 purchase, unreal,!!!! I had forgotten about this Paul, and that's due to being 15 years older and my wife says radio dementia haha, I am so happy we got to get that radio to you, and the fact that its served you so well for 15 years, Yaesu definitely made a bloody good radio with great staying power. I hope your doing well Paul, and sing out if we can help you at any stage of the new shack development, I can show you how to be as broke as me haha Keep smiling old mate, cheers Brenton VK3CM or back then VK5BM(still have the VK5 call, can't ever get rid of that one.)

The VRF was a good feature, similar to preselector of FT102, had one of those at the time which was why I chose the FT1K, apparently its design was by the same engineer, and it had similar IF chain

Fitted the Inrad 73mhz 1st if filter narrows the IF down from 8khz to 4khz helps with close in signals thus improving the dynamic range about 120dbm.

Nice video Brandon. Great W I D E TX for ESSB. Try adding the Heil PRAS to it and use the midrange for “noise reduction” you’d be amazed mate. Great video

    Hi Brenton
I just watched this video. I have been looking at the 1000mp mark v. I want the 200 watt version. Can I get our opinion please sir. Should I save up for the FTDX101MP or should I spring for a 1000mp mark v? Thank you sir!!
