Anyone who has done their ACL before, know how difficult it is to come back from that. Especially if you’re an athlete. VVD is 6’4, 215 pounds, when you’re that big, coming back to your best and maintaining your athleticism is almost impossible. And yet this man came came back and went deep into all 4 competitions. The VVD slander is getting ridiculous at this point smh

My brudda joins LFC and catapulted us to challenge in the league, and to a UCL Final. The following season went on to win UCL, again continuing our title challenge. Went on to win PL in the 3rd season and had some 70-game record without any loss at Anfield. Got many accolades, nominated for Ballon D'or etc. before going down in 4th season with terrible injury. Joined back in September the following season and again went on to push us to challenge and compete in every competitions and won 2 trophies. Played 58 games despite not being his 100% best. The only thing overrated is this deluded person's opinion.

18-19 Van Dijk was absolutely incredible. He was doing 2v1s vs Spurs and still attackers were scared of him. The 'Aura defending' was a real thing, because was also putting his body on the line, combined with the impeccable timing and IQ. But, since the ACL I feel as if he is much more passive and tries to delay the attacker rather than tackle which means hes able to be caught out more, see the CL final and Sancho's goal earlier in the szn. He's still world class, sure, but the name Van Dijk seems much less scary. For me atm he sits at the same table as someone like Ricardo Carvalho for the prem but things can still change

The idea that Van Dijk is no longer a strong defender post-injury is genuinely ridiculous. He lost pace, that cannot be denied, but after he recovered, he remained one of the best in the world. Are we forgetting Liverpool went unbeaten in the league from January to July last year???? Got to a champions league final???
As for this season, his poor form has been from both a lack of confidence and pure exhaustion; from the start of the 2021/2022 season to the World Cup, he had played the most minutes of ANY player at the World Cup (7,597 mins, next highest was Joao Cancelo at 7,347 mins). He had a shortened break before pre-season with Liverpool still in champions league and remained a permanent starter from there on out. He’s currently far from his best, or the best in the world, but it’s far from gone.

he didn't lose pace. have seen every game since he came back from injury. for the first few months he didn't trust his vertical jump (which cost a goal away to brentford last season) but he's as quick as before. until his hamstring injury he had played the most outfield minutes in europe since the start of 21/22. any seeming reduced mobility is fatigue, hence the hamstring tweak

It's the same reason that Jan Oblak is an elite goalkeeper. He may not be the flashiest, he may not pull off highlight reel saves constantly, but his positioning means he doesn't have to. The same can be said with VVD. His positioning means he doesn't have to fly into tackles.

If u watch liverpools last 15 goals conceded van dijk is not at fault for any of the goals, all the goals are from mistakes from the wing backs or right centre back but obviously he can’t be anywhere

Saka is i think around 30 G/A away from the Under 23 record in the PL and he’s 21. He’s already shown his unreal ability. He’s creative & a threat infront of goal. mfs think Wingers have to have 30+ goals now because of Salah. Ronaldo only had 1 PL season with over 20 Goals.

He is not far off, he just worded it wrong with comparing VVD to Cahill. All the top defenders had very good game awareness. VVD is in the mold of the likes of Sol Campbell, Koscielny and Ferdinand. Defenders are very dependant on their physicality. These defenders tend to have a huge drop when they get older. If VVD can adjust like Thiago Silva did, then he will definitely be up there when he retires.

Van dijk is definitely not underrated, it is just that people always try pick on people when there not performing too well, people tend to forget he finished 3rd in the balon dor in his prime and was one of the best defenders not taking into account of trophies, he's big strong fast and very smart. I agree with everything Leban said about VVD even with the Cahill shout. Cahill was a better tackler and always put his body on the line. It was VVD’s physicality which put him a level above the average.
VVD doesn't need to be because his positioning is elite. That's what makes him an elite defender.

The only reason I would agree with VVD being overrated is because I believe people still talk about him as if he's who he was in 2019, which he just isn't. He hasn't been on that level since he's come back from that injury (which is understandable) and yet some will still call him the best centerback in the world. He also does lack the longevity of other Premier league greats which makes it difficult, for me atleast, to rank him amongst them (the likes of Terry, Adams, Rio etc). That's not to take anything away from him tho, he is still good obviously and there was a period of time where he definitely was the best in the world, which he deserves a lot of love and credit for.
VVD is overrated. For years he was viewed as invincible, however he is human. Does that mean he’s bad? No. He’s top 5 CB’s in the world. He’s elite. But he’s not invincible.
