- The 5th generation iPod touch was a massive upgrade to the iPod line and managed to keep iPods relevant as smartphone popularity continued to rise. But here we are now 8 years later in 2020- how does the iPod 5 hold up?

If this video gets 5,000 likes I'll buy the iPod touch 7th gen for a review.
If not, then well, maybe I'll buy it anyways. But pls like and subscribe thanks
@@everythingphonetech9992 don't worry, I'm bathing in hand sanitizer every 20 minutes
91Tech i was actually watching your older vid from 2018 on this. i love your vids! keep up the great work!
91Tech I got one on eBay with iOS 6 on it! it runs like new.
I once found one on display in 2015 and it was still on iOS 6.
Shawn Murphy yeah! some don’t update them. where was it?
I love how you make these more random videos with older tech. Way cooler than most other tech you tubers! Keep it up!
thanks for the support :)
Hope you’re all staying safe during this dark time. Peace ✌️
Nice guy no one cares
I have been using my iPod touch 2 since 2009 and still using it, although my main iPod is touch 7 now, bought in 2019. Now the touch 2's job is playing ASMR audio, helping me fall asleep.
I literally just looked for this video last night. I ended up watching the 2019 one. And i get the notification for this.
Charles Nokes same
Same thing no way
i'm still using my ipod 5 as a secondary device and for that it works quite well.
have you figured out a way to install amazon music, spotify etc? or are you just using older versions? the new versions won't install on mine that i just picked up for $20 for fun
@@isaachaze1 i installed Spotify before they raised the required limit for software but it should be able to allow a download of an older version of it, and I can check Amazon Prime music to see if that works as I just started using it
@@squishyman38 it won't even allow me to install the current amazon music app. i think there is a way to dl the older versions on to your pc and then install it on your ipod from the pc. i haven't tried this though and i don't know how to do it
isaachaze1 the only way that I know that works is if you have already purchased the app or download it on a device that’s compatible with the app and then download the older version on your iPod
@@squishyman38 right. I think it may be possible to find an old version of amazon music (or whatever) online, download it to your pc, and then transfer it to your ipod from your pc somehow. I'm going to play around with it and see if i can do it.
Ah, the iPod touch 5. In Elementary school everyone had one. All of my friends. I begged my parents but they never got me one 😔
I saved up my money and bought an iPod 4 for $60 on Craigslist in 5th grade
Sad story:((
But did ipod have 3g? I want to buy 1 ipod touch gen 7 to use like an iphone
Please give me an answer, thank you so much^^
Ah i had an ipod touch 5th gen in 2012 good times
My step grandpa still uses his iPod 5 every single day
the real question is how does he do it tho
WTF
I use iPod touch 6
For what tho? It can't even do much anymore
my dad does too
Never had one of those, but I was rocking a 4th gen when i was little
same, but i found a 5th that was restored so i kept it :)
This was my grandson's first iPod, when it was new. In 2021, I use it as a music player. It connects to my car radio using a Bluetooth adapter. Sounds great.
Still one of the best pieces of tech I have used. I used to use it as a phone before I was able to afford an actual phone with a plan. I just called and texted through wifi. I was on a college campus so I had wifi everywhere.

That screen is just nostalgia...
Matthias Van Duysen I’m still using an SE with this screen.
Most if the downsides dont really matter (aside from the battery) if you use it as the thing it was intended for: music. As someone who owns a 1st gen 16GB iPad Mini on iOS 9, while it is pretty slow its not “brutal” like how people make it out to be. If you use it as a UA-cam machine through Safari, it’s speed isnt really a problem for me atleast.
Still have mine, it’s the first of only two iPods I ever bought (the other being the final 7th gen)… Still alive, albeit, quite slow 😅 Nostalgia brought me here, love the iPod! 😁
I remember everybody had this one, years ago! Awesome video, stay safe:)
I used one of those for 3 years and took amazing care of it, my sister broke it after it became hers within days
That's just sad.
This is still my gym companion. It sometimes slows my life by a bit but for Spotify it's enough
Edit im still using it and somehow i dont have many lags anymore. I use it for netlix, spotify, apple music, safari, some games that are still sopported and social media. The battery is really weak as it drops from 100% to 10% in like 15 min of usage. I can still exchange the battery and rock it as long as i want.
I feel like the iPod touch was overlooked a bit.... I’ve honestly noticed a difference in sound quality using my AirPods on any type of iphone vs the iPod touch... I kid you not... the sound on the iPod touch sounds sooooooo goooood.
Hey josh the IPod touch 7th generation was a redesign as well. Apple had to add a brand new chip and cram in 2gb of ram into that puny frame. Internally it was redesigned. They just forgot to improve the battery life, upgrade the camera or innovate at all. They actually forgot to remove the headphone jack as well
I get about 24 hours on the 16gb. It works super well and has no delay with ui like yours' does, besides not being able to have any current apps, the only issue is the battery display when charging is false. You'll plug it in and it'll think it's already half full when it was dead. Other then that, works perfectly fine
Same no battery issues at all
If you’re just starting out with an iPod is iTunes/Apple Music the only place to get music to download that’s safe? Thank you!
thank you so much for making videos like this because no one else really will and i enjoy watching your videos
i actually had an iPod 5 generation without the camera, at the time i was 11 or 12 and my iphone 4 (dad's old phone) was getting slow and had already lost support so my parents gave me this iPod on christmas as a christmas present. I loved it as a kid and know i just look back and appreciate the memories that I had created with this beautiful device.
Man I really like your videos when you show those old tech gives me memories
I had one in 2013. It was a great device back in the day.
Lmao I still use mine every day. I'm getting ready to buy a 7th gen, because I still want a dedicated music player (I can't fit my entire library onto my phone), but I think that, for the amount of use this iPod has gotten over the past 7 & 1/2 years that I've had it, it still works pretty well for what I use it for. When I got it in high school, I didn't have a smartphone, so my iPod was what I played games like Temple Run and Angry Birds on, and also what I took pictures on (hilariously enough, I have my degree in photography now, and, yeah... that image quality though). The only reason I really want to replace it is because the battery is dying, and because I need more than 32 gigs of storage. Back in the day, though, this thing was all I ever wanted or needed.
This was my first iOS device. I still remember having a crappy Samsung exhibit II as my phone. The phone was so bad that I used the iPod for everything except make calls and texts. The iPod 5th generation was an amazing device for its time. It was a lot cheaper than the iPhone and basically did everything an iPhone could do besides calls obviously. I really loved that iPod. It was super thin even for today’s standards. I also think it was the first apple device that started the stupid camera that stuck out the device.
It’s amazes me that this iPod touch designs is still in use after 8 years and I remember having the 5th Gen back in high school and I still have it somewhere xD
i really like the intro and outro music❤️
Bought mine March 2013, still using it now just to play some tunes.. the battery life dropped (that's a given), but i have no other complaints. Now i use it to play around an hour worth of songs every night, and i only need to charge it (once it turns red) once every 2 weeks or so.... My friends at school were looking at me, amazed, because it seemed like i was the only person that still owns this device lol... I love my yellow ipod touch 5 so much!
I have my sister's one now and it's great. Battery lasts a long time and it's still pretty fast. I must be one of the lucky ones. : )
It is such a timeless design.
I have a 5th gen slate iPod touch in mint condition still running on iOS 8.1.2 in my collection. Thank god it never got updated further
This was one of my favorite designed iPods even the ones after this one aren’t as good. I feel like the wrist strap made it feel more premium and that clicky thing was so satisfying
Ikr they should have kept the wrist strap :(
Not a fifth gen, but I used to use an Ipod 6th gen back when I was younger, and my parents wouldnt let me get a smartphone. I loved that thing despite only having the 16gb version, so i'd have to delete apps to be able to take more pictures. Its camera took pretty great pics for what the device is. I took it on a vacation trip out west to like 6 national parks, and took some pretty sweet pics.
I have to disagree with you on some things you said about the iPod touch 5th Generation, I take mine with me to work and it holds a darn good charge. I play it loud and it last me 81/2 to 9 hours, and it still has battery left for about an hour or two.
I agree with everything you just said - but for what it's worth I just passed one of these on to my 8 yr old niece - who is, as we speak, talking to her cousin on FaceTime. I think you nailed it when you said that they were good for people not yet old enough to have a phone - and that is still true today!
I have had a iPod 5 touch from 2014-2018, and boy, does this give me some slight nostalgia
I got a 5th gen for my tenth birthday. I used it pretty religiously up until I got my iPhone 4s a few years after. Since then my iPod has been hibernating inside my night stand up until a few months ago. To my surprise it was pretty well preserved. The battery can actually hold charge for a couple days when all I use it for is music and Spotify. I have no issues with either of the apps except for Spotify ungodly slow boot. But other then that it’s nice to have 25gb of music with me on a device that no one can call me on.
i bought a chair at a thrift shop found it in the chair didnt know what it was now i do. How can i charge the think aee whats on it
i love your content! love to see you still making videoes on these kind of devices! keep it up..
Keep calm and wash your hands stay safe your my favorite tech channel
Another Great Video 👍🏻
You forgot to talk about the most important aspect: THE SOUND
My dad got this ipod brand new back on 2014 and the battery just as good as the day he got, its not slow, and it performs everything it should flawlessly
I used one for 5 years and sold it for 90€, 32gb model. Loved it
I have been using an ipod 5th gen since 2012 until 2019. Im glad to have a better device now.
I use mine daily since release for the main reason it was created: music reproduction. The internal specs are phenomenal and sound quality is amazing even with higher impedance headphones. For further info Ken rockwell has an article on his website.
I still have mine and still works great. I only use it for my music now though. Mine is still in IOS7 and I dont plan on upgrading it because IOS7 with it already made it a bit slow.
Thumbnail made it look like you had the rare 16gb iPod 5 with no rear camera. Damn I forgot about that thing, that would be a very interesting video. Yes I know you touched upon it in the video but still it just reminded me of it.
Yea I should try to find one. Would be a fun video
Are they actually rare? Finding cases specifically for it definitely was lol. Still got mine
Nice. I think I remember seeing a Detroit borg video about it when it came out but that is the only way I knew it existed. I can’t remember any other videos about it from the big guys. Such a bizarre product. May go alongside the iPad 3 and iPad mini 3 as the weirdest kind dumbest iOS devices
I have a question. I just bought a 2017 27” iMac with the following specs:
-3.5Ghz Quad core i5
-8Gb 2400mhz ram
Radeon PTO 575 w/ 4gb if vRam
Do you think if I ran some games on it (ROBLOX, Fortnite) at high settings, would it break my iMac
Thanks!
A potato could run roblox
This was my very last apple device (if I'm not counting Airpods from 3 years ago). I have the 16GB model with no rear camera. It made a solid media device before I got a phone and then a great music player throughout high school. Super laggy but it works.
i have the exact same 1 also :)
I'm still using my iPod touch 5, every day for podcasts. The battery started to slow down so I took it to the Apple store for a new battery. They don't put in new batteries, they swap out your old iPod touch for a new one. From your review, I guess this one won't last as long as the last one, but I still enjoy it. Thanks for your review, after all those years I never knew what that silver button was for, now I do. haha
I also found one of those 5th gen iPod touches with no back camera, for 85 dollars sealed and unopened, a real steal for a very rare collectors iPod
5:43 just so you know, the iPhone 4’s camera module is thicker than the iPod itself
Quent K yeah but honestly it’s worth it. I had a 4s with a perfect (non scratched) lens and the pictures were so amazing for a 2011 phone. Like damn
This was my first device of my own. My dad bought it for me when I was 8 and it was great.
This was my childhood device. I had the 16GB, with no rear camera. So nostalgic.
I still use my 4th Gen iPod touch daily since I got it back in like 2010ish works great still to this day.
This is interesting to me as a 79 year old great-grandmother who bought my iPod 5th gen and never used it except for maybe looking it over a bit the first week I had it. I thought about it today and dug it out to charge it. Since I don't know where my instructions are right now, I turned to UA-cam to reacquaint myself with it. Now I'm kind of discouraged about the OS situation. Overall I doubt that will matter much to me, though. We'll see. I don't truly need any more tech toys because I have so, so many of them! However, prices aren't bad, so I can buy a newer iPod if I think I really need one.
I still use one today. Bought it from ebay in 2021, and i use it for pocket gaming. Works pretty well, play roblox and clash royale on it, but unfortunately some of my favorites are unsupported. Still get latest updates though, and that feels amazing. For simple games, zero lag.
4:23 anyone gonna talk about how he said “phone” instead of “iPod” lol
Rayyan Khan it’s a mistake Jesus Christ
When I heard it I immediately went to the comments section knowing somebody would say something😂
What about how the iPod touch 2 from 2008 holds up in 2020? I still have it and with iOS 4.2.1, it's extremely limited when it comes to internet. However, it still works fine as a regular iPod for playing back downloaded music and videos. The iPhone 5s I think still holds up well though in 2020
Great video, I recently found my ipod touch 5th gen and was wondering if it still stood up.. Thanks.
If i get this as my first apple product would it be good, ive been a cheap phone guy.
and i wanna get it
I had this iPod in 2012 and gave it to my mom years later. She still uses that dang thing to this day even after getting her a 10 inch Samsung tablet.
Was my first piece of tech, got it when I was only 7 and kept using it for 5 years.
I still have a Red one on iOS 6. I love it so much!!!
For the next vid, can you explain why ipods dont include touch id pls? Im confused and curious
Watergoblin YT Apple just cheaper out but also it’s not really needed on a basic music player.
I used to have an iPod but it was the 6th generation but I upgraded to the iPhone 8 and now in 2020 it is just so bad and super slow. Similar to what you were embracing in this video. But overall I love my iPhone 8 and I still have care for my iPod even when it is bad. And also, it was just funny at 4:24, you said “on the bottom of the phone” instead of saying iPod” 😂 but overall great video, keep up the good work. Your videos are always interesting and sometimes tend to make me laugh 😂 👍
I bought it in 2014
Never used it to the fullest back then
But presently trying to squeeze the most out of it by using it as a practice amp for my guitar (still processes fast enough to work properly at extremely low latency)
I'll also agree that battery is not good at all
Did it still have support for app like Spotify, Apple Music, Discord, or Line ? And how was the battery life ? Because I found this device on dirt cheap price in local store (I want to buy it as device to listening music when working out or cycling, since my phone is kinda big)
Still love my iPod touch 5th gen :)
i like the little push hole it has its so satisfying to press in and out.
Your intro sounds sooooooooooooo freaking amazing
I'm still using an ipod touch 5 I bought 8 years ago to replace an Ipod touch 4th gen that had broken. That said, I've just upgraded from a new macbook pro, and I'm not sure if I can sync it properly without itunes...
...but also, i feel kind of miffed about the idea that I'd be forced into buying a new one when my old one works just fine (and with the otterbox I'd put it in, it's still in good condition). It also bugs me as someone who uses an ipod to literally just listen to music and podcasts, since there's literally nothing a current gen could do to improve the experience, so I'd just be paying because of planned obsolescence.
hello how are you did you think iPod touch 5th generation is good for 2023 and does it gets movies dowmloaded from itunes mUsic and pictures are they good for that things to store
I'm still using mine and my two complaints are the BATTERY and iOS. While I can get over iOS because I mainly use it for music and podcasts these days. I used to watch UA-cam on it but the screen is just too small. Moving on the actual issue that stayed the same through the years. The battery was always problematic on the fifth and mine is even more so. While it holds a charge of more or less of about 7 hours (can be more) on both headphone jack and bluetooth it has this error were it will show me that my battery is draining faster that it actually is. For a while I thought I might be mistaken but for the past 3 years it kept on going with no clue to what the problem could actually be. All I have to do is plug to a power source for around 10 minutes and the battery is "magically" full. I am guessing at this point I will replace the battery but given this iPod's battery was never its strong point I did not bother so far.I got used to it and its quirks, so I'm not complaining, I'm just sharing my personal experience. It's still convenient to for me personally to use an iPod touch and even my other older iPods just for music, podcast and audiobooks purposes.
Same experience
So...... will the iPod touch be like a wonderful phone or would you like it
It's not a phone
I got an iPod touch 5 for Christmas and it did not come with a loop for some reason but it's still a good experience.
When was the last time y'all used a iPod for me it's been a year sense it was my main device
literally watching this on my itouch 5 HAHAHAHA
Mate I can’t even get UA-cam via the app can you help? Want to use for my car as it will only use iPod or mp3
yea. i agree with you. it’s really slow and that make it unusable. but i still love it, using it and i’m still earning money with it. it would be great if we can fix that problem. is there any way to downgrade back to factory state OS?
That was my first iPod! I had a blue iPod 5 when I was 12.
I wonder if you can do a review on the iPod touch 2nd gen as It was very popular almost like the 4th gen. I would love a video on that!
My friend’s sister had one of these iPods. And my dad had a 3rd Generation iPod Classic. As for me, I never had an iPod, the closest thing I had to one was my dads only iPhone 3G that had didn’t have service on it. I used it to play games and music.
I was wondering what that round piece on the back was for...
and now you know! Hope you feel enlightened
Yea I had one when I was like 8 or 9 and I never knew what that was 🤣
Me with a iPod touch that doesn’t have a camera:
my husband is big marvel I had a iPod touch 5 with a frount camara it sucked
I started with a 4th gen iPod Touch, got the 5th gen for my birthday I believe the year it came out? I remember 2012, then the iPhone 6 was my first phone in 2015, upgrading to the iPhone 7 in 2016 and then to the iPhone XS in mid 2019
Oh wow what another one what color is it supposed to be dark silver or something
My mom has one of the 16gb ones, didnt realize it was that old. I still had an iPod 4
I normaly don't use it anymore, but I still have it in my collection!
I'm using the iPod touch 6 right now and I'm looking to buy the 7 in the future
Still have it, new battery, looks great and on IOS 6.1.3. Original UA-cam app working with TubeFixer. Lightning fast
so many memories....
I got one way back when they came out, still use it as a dedicated music player (iOS 9 support helps there) to save some battery on my iPhone
I would like to Herat your thoughts on using a iPhone XS Max in 2020. I got my iPhone XS Max in May of 2019, before that I had an iPhone 6, which I got in December 2014, before that I had an iPhone 4 that I got in spring of 2013.
@91Tech dose it support the new version of Apple Music where you don’t need to pay for each song
Still have my Product Red iPod 5th gen I got right after launch even though I don't really use it much anymore, although I jailbroke it in 2017 I think. Also never upgraded past the last version of iOS 7 so everything still feels decently smooth. Gotta see if the charger is laying around; might try using it again for a bit and seeing how it feels.
Wow! i never knew they made a 16gb silver one with no camera, that's really interesting!
I own a pink iPod touch 5th generation and I plug in into my car to listen to Apple Music. I use it almost daily. Yes it is a bit slow but it works and it’s really cute.
using this ipod touch 5th gen as my car's music player only for 8 years. is it worth it to upgrade to a 6th or 7th gen under these circumstances?
edit: 2 months later: my 5th gen is dying. bah.
as of 19 feb 2021, i still have it. i just changed the battery today and plan to keep it with me for a few more years. :")
