    This hits home really hard. Growing up, I was always taught to never stop and that a break is for the weak. Others will get ahead of me in the competition (academia or what else) and that I will fall behind and won't make it back up if I take a break. For so long this has haunted me and eventually I broke in college. It was the worst time, by myself on the opposite of the coast and I ignored all physical and mental signs that I was deteriorating. It is so important to pay attention to yourself, love yourself and give yourself a rest. When Joe said that Asians have this problem, it took me back to my childhood of being disciplined this way and how it is affecting me so negatively right now. I'm learning to fix my habits and that incessent voice in my head to makes me push myself too hard.

      Ariana Kim Ariana Kim I agree! Definitely look out for yourself. Your mental health should come first. I hope you’re doing much better now. It takes time to unlearn those habits. I grew up similar until I hit my last year of high school, I felt like I could never achieve anything unless it was perfect. It became an obsession, I couldn’t hand in my work because it wasn’t perfect. I stopped coming to school because it would cause me to have an anxiety attack. I had too much pressure on me and snapped. I wish Asian parents started caring about their kids more and realizing that mental health is real.

      Ariana Kim that's the right approach to take in life especially now that I'm older and definitely see things differently. Asians aren't white with the whole white privilege shit, gotta work ten times as hard just to survive. only difference is knowing when to rest and smell the roses. mental and emotional health is so important. not enough emphasis on that.

      @stvltiloqvent 7 років тому +1

      Ariana Kim dude, same. I had my bouts of depression, anxiety and low moods once I hit first year university because all I ever knew was to work hard and not let my parents' time and money go to waste. I was studying overseas and all I could think of was being a disappointment to my parents. These things really bury themselves deep in your mind.

    Possible tip for Isaac: I had anger issues, specially to homework when I was a kid. Later in life found out I'm hypersensitive. Body goes into fight-or-flight mode when stressed, so hard homework would litterally make me rage, or I had to go into another room to physicaly escape the work. Working with lights on didn't help either, since I'm also affected by the more yellowish light from older bulbs. Sounds weird, I know, but true. Dunno if any of it relate to Isaacs situation, but if it does, make sure he starts the work early, and let him take lots of breaks when hitting a wall.

      It's called being a teenager. From around the age of 13 to 15 i noticed that i was bottling up rage, if my mom asked me to the dishes or any chore i didn't wanna do. Now i don't even think twice about it. It's just going through hormonal changes in most cases.

    I also heard that when working in Asian companies, you're peer pressured into doing overtime for several hours after your max work schedule. Say if you clocked out just one hour overtime, coworkers would then bully you and belittle you into staying longer/committing suicide like Joe mentioned. It's terrible, and I hope Asia starts properly paying attention to this.

    • @zebnemma
      @zebnemma 7 років тому

      I don't get it...... This is so unbelieavably retarded to me I just don't get that mentality. Why mandatory to work overtime? The only thing that truly is mandatory is to work their designated hours. If yoyu sign up for a job of 8 hours nobody should force you to stay a minute longer than that cuz that's what u signed up for WTF is this logic? I can imagine them being like "ohhh this job-ad says 8 hours but what it really means is 12+ hours" Dude WTFFFFFFFFFF??????????

    the overtime reached 159 because some companies treat the 6th day or weekends as overtime work, my highest overtime per month was 144 hours ( average 14 hrs a day, 10 hrs on a saturday ), that was 10 years before, before they passed a law requiring all companies to limit working overtime by 60 hrs a month, some companies still get away though.

    • @youngbaelol2555

      Toshi damn quick Q it’s a bit personal but how much would they pay per month? For working 140+ overtime hours a month

    • @Sheishi_Games
      @Sheishi_Games 7 років тому +2

      back then I was making $4400 monthly. $12 per hr, overtime is +35% of your hourly rate. $192+ daily ( 8hrs + 6hrs overtime ).

    • @scottemmonsemmons1855

      Many Americans work 16 hours a day for years straight. You work 8 hours at one job and go straight to another job when you get off for another 8 hour shift. And most make crap money at both. How much do you make at a Japanese company?

    • @Sheishi_Games
      @Sheishi_Games 7 років тому +2

      Scott Emmons Emmons refer to my 1st reply ^ I just turned yen to $. honestly, I dont think theres much difference, its the overtime pay and bonuses that adds a lot here in Japan.

    • @Sheishi_Games
      @Sheishi_Games 7 років тому +3

      @Studio6mm its not the overworking is the problem, the society is fucked up in Japan, and today, most Japanese men dont even know how to approach women, a lot of them gets discouraged easily especially if they're not as good looking as a pop idol.

    I have stages of anger :
    1. Kinda irritated, but keep to myself
    2. Will glare and have an occasional sigh
    3. Get snappy, but I'll try joking about it.
    4. Trying to rationalize the issue. Want to solve our problem in a timely manner. This is the calm before the storm, don't go past this point. There's no return.
    5. Will absolutely lose my shit, you will learn new insults and get stabbed, your house will burn down and your beloved belongings will be smashed.
    6. Won't talk for 3 months to a year and if I'm forced to talk, it's a repeat of 5. I will be extremely vindictive in everything I do, unless I get a proper apology.

    Another possible reason for Japan overworking may be due to a population decline. In addition Japan has one of the most strict standards for foreigners to become a citizen with almost 99% of the population being Japanese.

    There are laws here in Japan to prevent overtime, but it doesn't work. People commonly clock out, only to go back to work. Officially they aren't working so legally the companies are safe.

    Most Asian countries are still developing. Practically almost all of them are still developing. If we are to be as developed as the West the extra work needs to be put in. Its not like America is standing still waiting for us to catch up. This is why we're tense all the time. Nobody needs to say it out loud but every time we travel, just the way the rest of the world looks at us, we feel like second class citizens of the world.

    If you have teens, teach them how to control their anger in a positive way. Like David said dancing. When I was young I was always angry and one day I hurt someone I loved and I regretted till this day, however I now turn that aggression towards running and playing music and now I'm much happier. Thanks JK for bringing this up

    It's about time... but if one is to read a book called Hegemony of Homogeneity it will be no easy task. Their whole working culture affects so many of the problems that their society encounters. However.... this isnt the first time they said theyd address the problem. I can only hope that something is actually done this time, even if its a slow progress, slow effort is better than no effort.

    i feel what they're saying. my parents are young but even they have the mentality. you have to be presentable to others even if it's fake. so my little sisters behave at school but the second we're all home even one is just fighting and having break downs. and i dont want to get married or have kids and women in my family, all they ever did was be house wives so no one knows how to help me and they all look down on me. mental illness is a huge stigma in asian culture especially. they just dont believe it and it's just a sorry excuse. it's all so complicated.

    i get david sometimes you just whip your cell. If you throw something soft you don't get the satisfaction but luckily i got a punch bag so now i take a deep breath put my cell down and just hit the punching bag for ten minutes until im chill again. its helped with my self harming as well.

    Isaac is lucky. At least he had help for his anger issues. My 1st generation Asian parents' idea of help is yelling at me until I calm down.😅 I still have severe anger issues and stress related lash outs.

    I’m literally the girl equivalent to David lol. I don’t throw my phone out of anger but when I’m mad I literally go and punch walls, metal objects(poles, metal carts, inside of elevators or escalators), I punch anything that hurts me and is inanimate. And then I cry and then I’m good. Cause I’m not trying to go to jail for beating someone to a bulp, so I just end up injuring myself. Kind of like David with his fucked up knuckles...I’m the black broke version of David lmao!!!!

    Asians are all sorts of messed up.
    seriously, Japanese people do work a lot and they work HARD. gotta admire their stamina. definitely a part of their culture.
    just read the article. wow both victims are so young and have their whole lives ahead of them. I'm over 30 myself and I feel guilty for complaining about the most mundane things like weather. who says you can't die young from heart disease. hope Japan really considers how they treat their people before there isn't anybody left in japan 😟
