Thank you so much, I was thinking about building a board like this lately and this came at the right time. Are there any other compressors anyone might recommend for this same context?
Awesome! I’m glad this helps! You can check out Walrus Audio Deepsix, Origin Effects Cali76, Wampler Ego these all sound great. Look for compressors that have blend/mix knob they will work as parallel compressors.
Great rundown! I had a couple questions. I also bought some of the TF and TS drive pedal captures. Just curious do you have to EQ those any with the big ToneX? I noticed that with both TF's and TS's, the drive pedal captures seemed to cut a lot of low end by default, so I ended up boosting the bass a good bit. Wondering what your experience has been using them? Also, where did you put the input trim on your big box ToneX?
Thank you! I didn’t do any major cuts/boosts with them to be fair. TF Lightspeed - model volume 7.0 TS Benson preamp - bass +1 db boost (so it is at 6.0), model volume 8.5 TF Kilt G2 - bass +1 (6.0), treble +0.2 (5.2), model volume 9.0 Input Trim +7.0, Volume Knob 5.0
Make sure to adjust your input trim and model volume at make it feel right prior to adjusting the EQ. You can loose lots of low end if you don’t get the gain staging right.
It really depends what amps you are using and if you are running your wet effects in front or after the amp. But to give you some perspective I run my decay around 11:30, mix around 12, predelay from 7 - 8:30 o’clock. For colour I mainly adjust tone and low end if I want it brighter or a bit darker/warmer. I leave diffusion at the middle usually. There are some cool presets you can get from Tonefactor, The Tone Shepherd and others to get you started.
Thanks for putting this up! I have a really similiar board but i just run mono and donmt have the tonepress of thebigsky... i want to maybe get a few more pedals outside my hxeffects and build a board around it. Was wondering what pedals you would recommend I get to use alongside the hxeffects that have midi capability. i feel like the 9 pedal slots on the hxeffects is not enough for a jack of all preset haha. thanks! great vid
Thank you! It really depends what you need to add/or replace from HX effects. For my board I will be adding a delay and POG. All big strymon and smaller v2 units have midi, Eventide H series, GFI synesthesia plenty of options out there!
SO COOL! How did you edit the hx effects to have your 6 footswitches in stomp mode, but preset + snapshots for your next modes? thats so sick wondering if i could do the same on my hx stomp xl
Thanks! Not sure if that’s possible in the XL you will need to check. In the preset selection you need to hit both preset up and preset down switches at the same time and it will go to snapshot mode for the selected preset and then in snapshot mode you can hit that MODE foot switch and it will go to stomp mode.
So the chain is guitar -> tone press compressor -> HX effects (in HX effects I’m using Dual Pitch/POG first) -> large ToneX (connected to send/return in HX effects and send/return block in the HX effects path) -> HX boost -> HX modulation -> HX delay -> strymon bigsky -> two small ToneXes -> Canvas Stereo
Thank you! These ToneX Ones that I’m using for amp captures don’t have midi unfortunately. But you can switch between up to 3 amps per unit on the fly manually. If you have the big ToneX for Amps, then yes it is possible to have it midi switching via HX effects.
Tonex are much better, much more responsive and sound almost 1:1 to a real thing (even in the FX loop). The only downside is that you can’t use fuzzes in the FX loop of HX effects as they sound weird due to input impedance. HX drives are not bad but there is a huge difference comparing to the Tonex captures.
Ye I have a tonex but use it as my amp with the stomp as FX I ordered a cloudburst and was thinking if I squeeze another on my board it would be a kilt or some kind of drive but I didn't think about getting a tonex one for my amp and using the tonex for drives I haven't even tried using the tonex as a drive as the amps are so much better on tonex than the hx stomp
Good job Chris!!🎉
Thanks!!
sweet setup man!
Thank you!!

Can you share your Big Sky settings? (at least decay, predelay) I just got one and trying to dial in some good tones!

Where in the chain is large ToneX? You say signal from HX goes into two small ToneX pedals.
@@Chriisdee I see, thank you, it really sounds great!
Very interesting pedalboard. Since your midi switching the Tonex pedals I am assuming you can have a lot of amp capture options?
Thank you! These ToneX Ones that I’m using for amp captures don’t have midi unfortunately. But you can switch between up to 3 amps per unit on the fly manually. If you have the big ToneX for Amps, then yes it is possible to have it midi switching via HX effects.
How do you compare the drives from the hx to the drive captures on the tonex?
Tonex are much better, much more responsive and sound almost 1:1 to a real thing (even in the FX loop). The only downside is that you can’t use fuzzes in the FX loop of HX effects as they sound weird due to input impedance. HX drives are not bad but there is a huge difference comparing to the Tonex captures.
You can check out TF video on how they compare to the real thing:

Quick question just wondering I know both work but I've seen conflicting views do you run ts or trs from the send in your hx into tonex?
