I love watching you both! It’s nice to see the” fails” since we all have them…..and we all learn from them. Thank you for putting it out there! ……I think the towels look great too!
Hey Garrett. Advanced laser user here I've used glowforge for 3 years and I've used a big 130 watt laser for a while now so I have a little experience doing these. I also do these cutting boards handwritten recipes but I actually Trace out the words using the pen tool which is more time consuming but this way I'm able to give the file as well as The cutting board to the customer. As far as the glow forge not being lined up correctly, check that the machine is completely level and the lid is completely shut because if it's not the camera will be off and also if it is you can calibrate that which you can find the tool in the glowforge forms. When I line up things on these cutting boards I go very simple route which is lining it up with the very top of the cutting board holding shift and doing the arrows down until I get to the bottom of it count how many times divide it and then holding shift to use the arrows and put it back up so if it took 24 moves to get to the bottom I would take it up 12 to get it in the middle and I would do that vertically and horizontally and I never have any issues lining up my graphics. I also don't use masking tape on these instead I just use soap water in a nice scrub brush and it seems to work great. I know this is lengthy but I hope it helps and if you have any other questions I'd be more than happy to answer.
You guys are absolutely amazing! We just ordered our Glowforge and used your code to get our discount! We also do sublimation and I am so excited to put the two together and come up with some kick ass products! I also use Photoshop for my sublimation and print directly from there instead of going to a different program. Saves a bit of time in the long run! Keep up the great work and fabulous videos!!
I draw a square that hugs the text….. I score the square on the masking 1000/ power 5 Ignore your engrave layer…. Gives you a ghost square….. Then check out if it’s where you want it…. Then when you get it where you want it….. ignore the square and engrave your text layer!
I have cutting boards and I hang them on my kitchen wall. I think the recipe should have been long ways, but of course however the customer wants it. I Love your video's. Wish Garrett would do a slow teaching on Adobe. I have the adobe 6 and have a terrible time trying to learn it.
Next time try the perspective crop tool in Photoshop. I don't have a glowforge but the laser software I use has an option to run the laser around the outside of what you're wanting to engrave so you can visually see the borders. You might also need to recalibrate your camera. One of the many reasons I don't own a glowforge not to mention the fact that must be connected to the internet to function.
Clean all elements that will transfer image, i.e. camera lens. I would also make the image a slightly smaller so to be sure it won't go off the board. I do love how the transfer and the engraving came out. I really wish my grandmother and my Mom left me a recipe to do this with but I think they all cooked from memory (Italian cooks...lol).
@kim and garrett make it I don't know how often you use Facebook, but I sent you a PM about an event we are hosting in Jacksonville, FL. We would love to have you as workshop speakers!
Hi Kim and Garrett - Great video. I like the idea of replicating old recipes, etc. You are a wiz at PS Garrett - great job. And even though there were a few glitches, your final products look fabulous. I even liked the too high cutting board - I bet the owner would still like to keep that. Thanks for sharing and continued success. Merry Christmas. Love PegEgg
Make a jig out of corrugated cardboard. Make a design with the outline of the board (maybe a smidge bigger), and align your recipe on that. Put the cardboard in the GF and pin down so that it does not move. Upload your design. Ignore the recipe, and cut the board outline out of the cardboard. Then remove the piece of cardboard you just cut out, and put the board in its place, making sure to not move the cardboard jig. Close the lid. Don't change anything on the design in the GF software, even if it looks off. Ignore the cut and re-enable the engrave. Hit Print!
I usually darken the words on the recipe in GIMP and than use that on the remove background website, so it will have a transparent background. This way saves a lot of steps
You both know, YOU TOTALLY ROCK!! These projects turned out beautiful! I wish I wasn’t scared to death of Adobe. I look at it and think my attention deficit brain won’t retain any of that… lol!
Hey Candace! I couldn't find another way to reach you! DM us if you can, we'd love to send you a free kit for all the love and support you've shown us!
Hey Garrett, Impressed with your skill, and I am very new to Photo Shop, so I have followed most all your doing in this video but, I am not having any luck getting the select tool to select my recipe that I am doing. I also here a lot of keys your using during your video that I have no idea of what your using. Can you show me a hot key list and help me understand this program a bit better? Or do you have some suggestions of where I can go to get some training that is online? Thanks
I don't have a glowforge but when I put things in my laser, I always tape off the piece and do a very light test run to see if it will align. when it's where I want it, I run at full power for the job. You can either burn through the tape or just take the tape off without moving the piece. My laser has a red light pointer for aligning as well which comes in handy but I'm not sure if the glowforges have that.
Now, we all have grandmas Hot Fudge Sauce recipe. 😁😂🤣 Okay, I didnt wrote it down, but, I'm sure, somebodybout there said Hot Fudge Sauce... pause, and wrote it down.
FOr the GF alignment, we tape down a piece of 1/8in MDF and do a quick score of the exact size of the item being engraved. I will also score center registration marks that extend beyond the outside scoreline. This will help to align the item once you put it in the glow forge with any registration marks you place on the tape. If that makes sense? The key is once you do that do not move the mdf.
Would u ever consider doing these on cutting board in ur business? I'd love to have some recipes done from relatives. U lost when within the first few seconds of starting...lol.
Live dangerously lol. Even if we knew how bad it could be we would think we could change it. With a pocket saw and Brad the gun not the guy we can fix anything.
After watching all of this... I'm thoroughly convinced, it would have been easier to cut a screen with the glow forge, and, just silk screen the towels. But... I'm inept, I still don't grasp the whole sublimation thing.
The cutting board engraving turned out amazing despite it being too high. Curious to know and see if you were able to find the identical cutting board and the final board.
I’m super curious about this. I used a Glowforge for the first time yesterday that belongs to a friend. (Used… watched someone else and I just played with software. Lol) I got a recipe digitized. But wasn’t sure about settings. And for some reason… in my head I thought that the color of the recipe would change when you had the settings right. ??? I had seen it in a video. Now I want to go back and try again.
Would ya ever consider doing this as part of ur business? I'd love to have some recipes done this way on cutting board. I got lost when u scanned the image...lol.
I think it looks great the way it came out. Great project share Kim and Garrett.
Thank you!

Thanks!
I love this idea
Thank you!
Just found your channel, love you two! I'm subscribing.
Wooo! Thanks!
Good job. Love the idea of putting a handwritten recipe of a loved one on a kitchen towel. Thank you two for sharing.
Thanks!

Thank you too

So cute! We might be able to get him to
I love this ofea
THanks!
We were having the same problem then we calibrated it and it is perfect now!! Maybe from moving it it needs calibrated.
Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback!

That's so cool. I want to do the same thing. I was going to try the burning liquid . 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You can do it!

Garrett... when you inched it up a scooch, you didn't re focus it. I always refresh and set focus twice to make sure. Hope that helps
Thanks!

It it wasn't for fails i might actually have some room in my craft area.
lol right?

lol another good option!

We were not!
Can u add Grandma’s name on the bottom to make it more balanced?
Try again on the back to get your alignment. 😉
Next time!
👍🏼❤️😊
Can you add grandma’s name at the bottom to fill the empty space?
They look great! Question: How much subli+mate did you use? Would love to see a video if it step by step using this method!
Coming soon!

what is TIF format....
Would ya ever consider doing this as part of ur business? I'd love to have some recipes done this way on cutting board. I got lost when u scanned the image...lol.
Yes! We are starting to offer custom etching like this in 2022!
Could you flip the board and use other side? Atleast to practice
Probably!
