  • This is Part 1 of 2 - I'm keeping this first part just in case you prefer the viewing angle for some reason.
Two trips to Starbucks, over two days, in Cary, North Carolina, adjusting my new camera's viewing angle and microphone placement. I think it's close to being really good but I'm thinking the viewer needs to see a bit less road and a touch more sky.
I still need to tape the mic cable inside the helmet to keep it from flopping around, but I like the results so far. After viewing this video I moved it farther from my mouth, out on the rim of the helmet, and it has since cut down on my breathing sounds.
I originally bought the GA100 but returned it for the GA420 due to the included external mic.
What do you think? Should the camera be tipped up a bit more to see more of the road? Please comment below and thanks for watching!
Update: I recorded an update to this video, in 60 FPS, but I did not like how it turned out once uploaded to UA-cam. So, to maintain the integrity of the angle test, I have unlisted that video and will record another using the same 30 FPS as THIS video, then post it as part 2.

What chinmount do you use? I’m interested in buying a GA420 but I have no clue if any chinmount will work or if I have to buy a bunch of extras.

Hello. Do you use a microphone to record sound? Or is this the camera's microphone?

does this camera have an external mic? I'm assuming it does. What kind of mic and wire are you using? Thanks

It's a valid question, Tim. The cam had an external microphone included. All the specs say is "dual microphone" and "noise-canceling microphone". Perhaps "dual" means both internal and external mics are included. The mic uses a micro USB cancel to connect to the cam. The mic has a clip, on the wire, which is useful enough to clip the mic to my helmet's chin barrier, and there is enough cable to easily reach wherever one would want to place it. Personally I need to work on it a bit, tape the wire semi-permanently inside, as the clip moves around a bit and changes the mics orientation from time to time.
I have a few newer vids showing video quality of RENDERED uploads (meaning I've run the video through DaVinci Resolve, etc.). I think the 1080p export of the 4K vid looks best on UA-cam, but I'll let you decide that one.
Here's the cam if you want to check it out for yourself. It's not an affiliate link or anything.

    Hi
Great video. Just one question. Looking at buying this camera myself. I presume, when the external mic is plugged in, the side cover has to be left open? Exposing the connection if raining?

      Heyya, Dopple!
Indeed, with the external mic plugged in, the cover needs to remain open. Perhaps that wouldn't be a big deal, but since the microHDMI port is next to it, that could be a pain. I am thinking I might simply encase the camera in a ZIP-Loc sandwich bag, with a hole for the lens, and a rubber band around the lens, but I'm not sure if I'll get that hog wild with this. I'll probably just cease filming if it rains or perhaps just switch to the internal mic at such times and just over-dub anything I want to say.
Honestly, the biggest PITA with this camera is not knowing if it is on or off. There is no real feedback to know. I don't know how to deal with that. I mean, I bought extra batteries for it, and with the huge microSD card I have I can go easily for an entire riding day with it running, and I've not yet had it turn off on me unexpectedly. However, I'd like the piece of mind to know it's on.
The wrist on/off switch is cool, but with armor its strap is too short, so I affix it to my handlebars. A little light comes on when I push the on/off for both the still shots and the video, but no light REMAINS on. I'd much rather have to more frequently change THAT battery, and have the benefit of a constant 'on' light, than not. But hey, for the price, I think that for which I paid.
I made a few other videos -- that all use the same CONTENT as each other -- where the only difference is how I post-processed the video (various options in Camtasia and DaVinci Resolve). Check those out if you're interested. The actual CONTENT is boring AF, but one can easily tell how UA-cam post-processing impacts various kinds of rendered vid.
Oh yeah, and I'll have my first unpaved (gravel) video out soon, using this camera, with my new ADV motorcycle. Smash that notification bell if you want to view that. As you see I very seldom post vids, so that one might interest because this cam's footage will be featured.
      Happy camming!
