On Easter 1986 Kurdt and Dale recorded the Fecal Matter tape, and Kurt used a 1974 Univox Hi-Flier Phase 3 Sunburst, and a Univox Super Fuzz pedal. Unknown Microphone (maybe a Shure SM-58?) And Dale used Mari Earl's MIJ (Made In Japan) Sears Bass and Dale's Drum Kit. Mari Earl later sold Kurt both the TEAC A-2340 Reel-to-Reel Recorder and the Sears Bass.

Nice to finally hear the whole tape. I remember finding some songs on here a few years ago but they sounded bad like they were recorded on a cell phone and uploaded. They were unlistenable. This tape is better than I expected. I hope one day they'll release this on cd or something officially.

Maybe because it was incomplete...Something else taped over side A or something. Or maybe that person was just a tease. lol. One of the versions we had that went from "Spank Thru" to "Downer" had somewhat better sound quality. I think someone will mix both sources sometime.
I always thought when I heard Kurt hitting those really high notes as a child watching Unplugged it was weird. After hearing this he has an insane range. Reverted back to it with Do Re Mi at the end
I love some things that the internet has made possible. When it was young, Nirvana rarities like this were really hard to find. now I just go on UA-cam
Totally. I remember reading Azerrads book over and over when I was younger, reading about all these pivotal shows, like the Community World Theatre, the Off Ramp, OK Hotel etc, and now I can go watch them from start to finish. Kind of mind blowing
yep. the whole bootleg "market" has been rendered obsolete. it used to be a big deal to find a rare live track by a band who had only played the song a few times live, or a b-side off a rare release...even as recently as the 90s file sharing era (Napster, kazaa, soulseek, and who can forget bearshare) you got lucky if you happened on something hard to find. UA-cam has taken the fun out of it, on the other hand, you can hear pretty much every song put on record, ever. not a bad tradeoff.
Never thought I'd hear this much, besides Bambi Slaughter, Sound of Dentage, "Buffy's Pregnant", Downer, and Spank Thru of this demo! Thank you for posting this.
Fecal Matter - Illiteracy Will Prevail (Complete) 21.11.23 0848am re: proto-nirvana...kurdt....nirvana fanbase. first in last out. which is how it usually works. and has...
Meanwhile, the "joke" part of Spank Thru, the first part, is the most indicative of his tremendous ear for melody and the basis for what became Nirvana's more "pop" sound later with About a Girl and then Nevermind. It is supposed to be a cheesy rock ballad, making fun of those types of rock songs, that then changes in to punk....but meanwhile, without the mocking lyrics, that opening melody to "spank thru" is pretty amazing in and of itself. IT presages the Nirvana "sound" that vaulted them in to the stratosphere. I loved Bleach and In Utero, and as great as he was at writing heavy loud riffs, his ear for melody is what made him a star, once he began writing like that, with About a Girl, Sliver, Been A Son etc.
I have to agree. With an ear like that for melody, it was bound to happen. Seems Kurt would very soon tire of the genre of music he was involved in, even at it's peak, he was done and wanted to try something else. This is how fast he was evolving as a musician! Genius, yes. Sell out, not at all. I cant help but think his best ever was yet to come! But then we will never know.
I think that these were considered to be properly recorded by the band. Properly released, however, would have/could be majority awesome on every level. Melvins rule!
It's higher quality than I expected actually, after hearing about this demo for years. Expected shoddy four track work, but his vocals are actually damn clear and the frequency range overall isn't bad at all. The drums are compressed and quite distant but that doesn't hurt the sludge punk feel of the whole thing.
I am surprised so many people are hearing this for the first time. This was floating around on cassettes being traded around back in the early to mid 90's. Heard the whole thing long ago.
Late 90s grunge? This isn't that great if it wasn't Kurt it wouldn't be appreciated at all. There are a million underground tapes from the 70s and 80s you'll never hear. It's really not ahead of its time at all.
@@bigmonk802I think it would still be appreciated because it’s Kurt’s taste in music, and a lot of people really like his taste in music. It’s not groundbreaking but it’s unique in its patchwork of inspiration. I hear a lot of influences here but it’s still original work. The album art is pretty cool too despite being a literally steaming pile of shit. If this came out today, I would make an effort to follow the guy who created it because i’d see a lot of potential, and if a lot of people did that we’d still have Nirvana, it just wouldn’t have hit the zeitgeist the same way.
@@bigmonk802I also find the term grunge stupid because no grunge bands sound the same as each other. It’s just 90s rock. A lot of people like the guy you’re responding to don’t realise that the underground scene that made 90s music explode started in the 80s. There is no 90s rock without 80s rock developing in backlash to commercial pop.
I love this band, I hope the singer guitarist goes on to become the most popular rock star of all time and live a happy life with a wife that doesn't hate him

A lot of fast punk riffs here. I honestly think Kurt downplayed his guitar ability to the point that even fans think he wasn't as skilled as he really was. He seems to always get the "musical genius who could barely play" thing, or "great at songwriting not very good at playing" etc. But that's bullshit, imo. Not a virtuoso, but definitely a good guitarist.
Wasn’t Jason Everman still in the band at that point though? I could be wrong, I just thought he had some solos on that album, I really don’t remember though.
Long time Nirvana fan and collector. More accurate: songs listed as Unknown have no confirmed titles. To differentiate them, here's the most common "made up" names. 1) Sound of Dentage 2) Sound Collage "Refer Madness Excerpts" 3) Bambi Slaughter 4) Laminated Effect/Made Not Born 5) Unknown #1 "Love My Wife" 6) Unknown #2 "Punk Rocker" 7) Unknown #3 "I Don't Want You" though rare 8) Unknown #4 (contains Anorexorcist) 9) Unknown #5 "Accusations" 10) Spank Thru 11) Unknown #6 "Insurance" 12) Class of '86 13) Unknown #7 "Vaseline" 14) Downer 15) Instrumental of Track #3 16) recording of Devo's "Turnaround" 17) Riffs Some collectors believe Unknown #7 is Blather's Log, a title in the boxset booklet (J-Card of cassette). Based on the lyrics and J-Card, I agree. Class of '86 is the correct song title for track #12. CAYA (Michael Azzerad), the title "Suicide Samurai" was mentioned by a guy to whom Kurt gave a tape. It's possible that title is for one of the Unknown songs. Just giving input.
What about Blathers Log and Buffy's Pregnant? As far as I know, Buffy's Pregnant and Class of 86 are the same song, but Buffy's Pregnant is a made up name. And what I this song being mentioned called Reefer Madness? Are the songs on this video not in the right order, or are there more songs on the video than listed on the cassette. I'm confused as hell
this album is great though, but yeah being yourself is better then trying to mask someone else/their approach you don't have to be like them but inspiration is helpful also
It's actually quite good. I listen to demos like this from guys who never made it. One I've been enjoying recently is a 1994 demo by a french band called 'jasemine'.
reminds me of the early recordings of Ween and Dead Milkmen. You also had Beck around making tapes. Daniel Johnston was a core inspiration of all those acts specifically and more beyond them. without Daniel Johnston so many kids wouldnt have been inspired enough to believe they can make music no matter the circumstances, with inspirations of comedy and not taking yourself seriously.
If someone else would do such music, everyone would say: Damn that sucks....lot of musicians started like this, but never had the luck to get famous. If it is genius, I can't say. But it's raw, pure and honest. Resembles to some Krautrock Stuff from the late 60's and early 70's. Sure Kurt had a tragic live story and that made him legend...and so in hindsight these tape occurs legendary.....it's always interesting to see where people that are, or were popular came from. So even these people put their pants on the same way we all do. By the way I love raw music....
I feel like any young, aspiring musicians should listen to this. Kurt is held in such high regard as a god amongst rock music, so to listen to his roots and how he started should be motivating to most people. I feel the same about Metallica's Garage Inc.
The tape that convinced Novoselic to form a band with him. Important demo of rock history.
Listen to the songs in order on the cover! That’s how the tape existed for Novoselic
Spank thru convinced him. I like to imagine I’m krist casually having this playing getting stunned by that brilliant track

Fecal Matter - Illiteracy Will Prevail (Complete) 21.11.23 0848am re: proto-nirvana...kurdt....nirvana fanbase. first in last out. which is how it usually works. and has...
This album is really enjoyable. I don't listen often, but I am now, and I'm really digging it.
@@joleneloveland2942 true, though it makes me sad asf to think about
in other recordings of Spank Thru' you can hear the sarcasm in his voice when he says "Living without you, girl, you only break my heart"
You just have to remember that people change and when it comes to music Kurt always did what he wanted to do in this moment
In Utero was mostly melodic 🤔
Wow. I thought this would be a joke but this is actually legit good. I can see these tunes fitting nicely within insecticide
Too bad these songs weren't properly recorded...a lot of them are really cool!
Thats the beauty of lofi music mister.
exactly, actually just bought a tape recorder to record some songs just for the raw sound of it.
krischin Spank Thru and Downer were re-recorded professionally by Nirvana plus they re-recorded Anorexorcist.
I am surprised so many people are hearing this for the first time. This was floating around on cassettes being traded around back in the early to mid 90's. Heard the whole thing long ago.
Dude, thank you so much for this. As a HUGE grunge fan this is roots and brings back memories. Appreciate you bringing this to our ears.
vocals are AMAZING and I love the drums. cool songs too!

Yeah, extremely derivative, is a fun demo, but you can tell where he was getting his ideas.
Wow, I didn’t know that Spank Thru and Downer were so old.... they are among my favourite Nirvana tracks
Downer in particular is genius. He’s literally writing late 90s grunge rock riffs in his sleep in the late 80s.
You know most of the lyrics on in utero and nevermind we're put together at the last minute....
Late 90s grunge? This isn't that great if it wasn't Kurt it wouldn't be appreciated at all. There are a million underground tapes from the 70s and 80s you'll never hear. It's really not ahead of its time at all.
You people really need to look up the definition of "literally"
Happy birthday Kurt I still love ya 💗
Guys who knows in which drops Cobain plays these songs?
Laminated Effect is really a good punk anthem.
I love this band, I hope the singer guitarist goes on to become the most popular rock star of all time and live a happy life with a wife that doesn't hate him
And that doesn't eventually kill him or atleast lead directly to his death, that sure would be unfortunate

it's probably bullshit, but i heard one of the guys went crazy and brought a horse into his apartment because he thought it danced to his piano, then he killed a hitchiker I guess. idk, they're from the same part of cleveland as my dad and his friend, but then they've been making up bullshit to tell me ever since I can remember so who the fuck knows.
anyway, that's not really relevant to the fact that devo is fucking awesome, and you can start with the new traditionalists ua-cam.com/play/PLqty-aJrGk1bezVWUCpcPZQ9Ekve9CwY2.html, but you should probably download it. fuck youtube lossy crap.
Not a virtuoso, but definitely a good guitarist.
his guitar solos on Bleach dispel any doubts of his playing ability, i think he turned his focus on vocal melody after that, it paid off obviously
Wasn’t Jason Everman still in the band at that point though? I could be wrong, I just thought he had some solos on that album, I really don’t remember though.
*at the time of Bleach, not this obviously

Long time Nirvana fan and collector. More accurate: songs listed as Unknown have no confirmed titles. To differentiate them, here's the most common "made up" names.
1) Sound of Dentage
2) Sound Collage "Refer Madness Excerpts"
3) Bambi Slaughter
4) Laminated Effect/Made Not Born
5) Unknown #1 "Love My Wife"
6) Unknown #2 "Punk Rocker"
7) Unknown #3 "I Don't Want You" though rare
8) Unknown #4 (contains Anorexorcist)
9) Unknown #5 "Accusations"
10) Spank Thru
11) Unknown #6 "Insurance"
12) Class of '86
13) Unknown #7 "Vaseline"
14) Downer
15) Instrumental of Track #3
16) recording of Devo's "Turnaround"
17) Riffs
Some collectors believe Unknown #7 is Blather's Log, a title in the boxset booklet (J-Card of cassette).
Wasn't Suicide Samurai something like pre-Anorexorcist?
What about Blathers Log and Buffy's Pregnant? As far as I know, Buffy's Pregnant and Class of 86 are the same song, but Buffy's Pregnant is a made up name. And what I this song being mentioned called Reefer Madness? Are the songs on this video not in the right order, or are there more songs on the video than listed on the cassette. I'm confused as hell
Dark Matter more songs listed
Bob Harley yeah. Suicide Samurai is called Love My family. After the first few minutes in goes into Anorexorcist. So yeah, it’s Anorexorcist
