+Lucas Davis Well, I mean if you consider staring off into space without blinking for around 60-70% of the film, yeah I would say so. I wouldn't say it was the greatest, but I will give it to Haley that he gave a stellar performance. :)

Professor Hobby was very cruel to David. He speaks of David as an extraordinary, precious machine, and he was aware of David's dangerous journey looking for Blue Fairy, but instead of rescuing him right away, the team decided it was better to "keep the experiment running" even though David could have been destroyed any minute. The last line about "we want to hear about your adventures" is extremely cold; David was programmed to be a little boy who suddenly lost his mommy and his entire world, it's not like he went out camping or something.

    • @canaldojames7503

I'll defend the creator on this one. Professor Hobby couldn't relate to him as a real person since David is identical to Hobby's son. It would ruin the uniqueness of his son. He was indeed one of a kind as every real person in the world.

By extension, he must assume that the other David is also a mecha. But yeah, David seemingly is able to commit atrocities out of human feelings, namely jealousy.

What makes David a real boy is choice & David has no choice but to love his mother, he was created to love her, hence the violent outbreak as if his whole self were attacked, onwards destruction of any competing device he percieves a threat to that enduring love. A love which if altered, alters himself in a sense destroys who he is, engineered to love with his whole being for the eternity of his existence.
Programmed to love is beautiful in it's innocence & tragic at the same time, far reaching & enveloping it would take love in & of itself & turn it into a destructive force annihilating anything that came between love & it's object, is why so much unhappiness was to follow. Love can only operate as a benign force if choice is attached, choice is the point meridian to turn back should it evolve into a malignancy destroying itself & the object bestowed upon.
Thankfully David was spared that all consuming force of his undying love, his journey prevented that from happening & time forsook taking him over & thus purifying himself this sojourn till only himself & mother remained with no competing forces at work to malign his innocence, which was kept his entire existence. .
A very thought provoking show indeed.

This film makes me cry. Every time. Buckets. David is far more 'human' than the 'real' humans around him. I loved Haley Joel Osment in Sixth Sense but this is just another level. What an amazing actor. If we had true AIs, we would want them to be like David. The scene at the end with his regenerated Mum is so painful but outstanding cinema. The film is very different from 'Supertoys Last All Summer Long' but I love it more than the short story. Thank you Haley for such brilliant emotional agony and beauty.

Little did David know, that his whole quest to be real was already realised. He was already real. HIs next thought, that he 'thought he was unique' - yes, this was also already realised. He was unique. The professor should have said "you are unique" - once created, the journey of experience and feelings create a unique person - never to be replicated anywhere else ever again. One where the other David was basically an evil twin, mocking our David and saying how he would never really be loved. Because of that, I had assumed that this was more of an action adventure. The kind where David got his wish and/or woke up, revealing that it was all a Dream. That David was an orphan who felt that he wasn’t accepted by his adoptive family. But I would find out how wrong I was when I tried watching the entire thing at the age of 12.

I do get it. He wasn't going to harm Monica. Just cut off a piece of hair. And as for Martin, It was a defense mechanism that got out of hand. Under any circumstances? Accidents HAPPEN. There are incidents where Robots can, will and HAVE harmed humans before. And some of those times, they were accidents. Accidents like what David did, spurred on by Martin's stupid actions. David wouldn't have gone to cut Monica's hair and risk become one-eyed if Martin hadn't dared him to.

    @Paucharka 11 років тому +9

Imagine this: there's a mechanism wired in every robot that says "DO NOT HARM HUMAN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE". If David had that wired into him, he would never touch Martin and he would never approach Monica's face with scissors in his hand. Of course, in theory there are certain situations where some accidents would still occur, and harm could be caused unintentionally and indirectly. I guess you can't prevent all accidents, but I think it might be possible to bring their number down.

I LOVE this film, I have seen many films I didn't like but I LOVE this one! This film is an emotional roller coaster ride. HJO is the perfect actor for this film. I also loved the Lines in the sand episode of house with Braeden Le Masters! This film is awesome the music is out of this world, the acting is spot on and the scenery will blow you away! I like films that can move you, too many times films have a sugary feel good ending, where as this is bitter sweat. I usually route for the villains in films but am left disappointed. I like how that he dies with his mother moments after that forever moment. This film is underrated so much. • @Paucharka

I agree that Martin is the conniving one and you could hold him partially responsible for both accidents. But an android shouldn't be so easily provoked into harming a human, that is not acceptable, in my opinion.

She missed her REAL son and burned David... maybe hoping for easying the pain. And then Martin came back and David was easily provoked jealous stupid machine anyway and yet mom loved him and didn't let to destroy him.
REAL children are abandoned every day and they loves and forgives, too! It is so stupid to think a robot can love more, even this is just a movie.

This movie gives me goosebumps every time I watch it , extremely well written to the point where you could easily be lost in thinking that this is reality and not science fiction but again I wonder why am I experiencing those ranges of emotions maybe because deep down I highly suspect that one day soon this will become reality , I may or may not live to see it but it is going to happen because we as humans know no limitations, we always strive for new technologies and sometimes we use science to experiment things we have no business experimenting because we like to be defiant a d we better be ready to deal with the consequences of our actions good or bad .

Oh yeah, Cybertronics costumers will just love that...
"Take your imprinted David out for a walk, meet another costumer with another David and watch them kill each other .."
That´s not "love" what they succeeded to give David.. that´s obsession.. good luck by controlling that :)
Just a _little bit_ adjustment work left before "David" should be ready for the market I guess..
Don´t got my wrong.. I love this movie, ever did and ever will. Maybe because it shows so clearly that it is impossible to make "artificial love" how should it be?
PROGRAMMING love requires to UNDERSTAND love first..
And by asking 100 people for their definition of love, you may get 100 different answers.
Which one of this answers to choose to realize such a product line..
I think this is one of the reasons for putting Joe at Davids side..
Both are made as "Loverobots" ..
Sorry for bad english, hope my point is understandable.

This is where the film lost it for me, he goes there starts swinging his creator tells him his makers would like to see him next thing he’s just left to it and slings himself off a sky scraper
Then half an hour of absolute mess takes place where dream sequences and reality are entwined and confused, a poorly thought out amount of time sees the seas rise, freeze, thaw and fall. 2000 years ? really?...
And of course within months of it’s released the world trade centre shots destroyed the films suspension of disbelief

I do think you have a point, and that might have been one of the things Kubrick and Spielberg were trying to make clear - robots do hold the potential to pose a danger once they get as advanced as the ones in this movie would be, so it's something we should keep in the back our minds even as we push technology forward.

I understand what you are saying, however i don't think David's behavior can be justified in this way. Let's not forget that "he's not a real boy", he is a machine. If he brakes down, engineers can fix him, in most cases. But if he hurts a human, it's not that simple to repair the damage caused.... David possesses many qualities of a human being, but in my opinion, you can't put an equal sign between him and real human.
