Moorcocks Elric was heavily influenced by Kullervo in The Kalevala, even down to his sword talking to him at the end. Except in Kullervos case it was just suicide, not the end of the world. Both were anti-heroes. Turin Turambar was Tolkiens take on Kullervo.
I'm not sure I see the influence on Elric so much - elements, sure, but on the whole it's a tenuous link. On Túrin - absolutely, and Tolkien stated as much.
Moorcock has stated Túrin as an influence, and he was familiar with the Kalevala, but I don't think it's as simple as "Elric was modelled on Kullervo".
Fair enough, maybe drop 'heavily' from above. By the the way - I placed an order for this and the zine based on your review. Thanks for that! The game looks great.
@@simovoutilainen9716 I hope you enjoy it 🙂
I discovered your channel when searching for material on the history of the Greyhawk setting. Thank you! I'm 52, and was introduced to D&D in 1979 by an elder neighbor whose family loved wargaming, miniatures and model-building. AD&D was the pivot-point of my early life, as it sounds it was for your young adulthood. I'm DMing for my nephew, who at 11 has memorized the 5e Monster Manual. I'm setting our game in Greyhawk of my own brewing, in CY623--mostly for my own gleeful fun, but also as a way to share the roots of the game with him, as a DM from a new generation.
Thank you for your life-long dedication to our hobby! Thank you for being witty and well-informed. Thank you for avoiding the standard UA-cam harangues. I'll be watching your entire catalogue over the coming days... er, months.
Thank-you! We're the same age, and it does sound like we have some similarities of experience (although I began with Traveller).
My dungeon master abilities leave much to be desired. I could change my approach using this edition. Huzzah!
Heh - well, it'd free you up from the rules a tad!
Has decent solo rules as well. Very easy to get a gaming world up and running with this system.
Indeed! It's very well set up for quickly getting things running. Essential, given that bringing the world to an end is one of its themes - need to get that world built for the next campaign 🙂
Very intrested in this for a Solo game!
It's good for it 🙂
@@WillyMuffinUK it really looks that way. I'm pretty dug in on my group system, but this looks great for just me.
@@midnightgreen8319 It's always nice having a Perpetual DM Syndrome release valve. T&T and SoloQuest are usually mine, but definitely going to give soloing Black Sword Hack a go.
@@WillyMuffinUK It absolutely is!
Hi Ian I just grabbed the pdf. I have a rules concept I would like to ask you about. would it be cool to ask through the Willy Muffin and the bootcut blue jeans email?
Sure.
One thing with usage dice, the book literally says tracking arrows, rations, and so on is easy and usage dice aren't for easily trackable things.
For Black Sword Hack, that is true. For Black Hack, where usage dice come from, it is used for tracking arrows etc. I was covering both Hack bases within the illustration of how usage dice can be used for any system, for all sorts of variable measures.
Just got my copy. Beautiful thing. Have you read Knock! by the Merry Mushmen?
I'm someone who got into OSR later and only started playing RPGs during 5e times. For me they're a fantastic collection of gaming wisdom.
Since you've been at this a fair while longer you may not need that sort of advice, but the books are still beautiful and full of little gems like drop tables, micro-settings, and bizzare d66 tables.
No, I haven't read Knock!, but judging from the quality of Black Sword Hack I'm merrily considering more from the Mushmen!
Always thought that max roles on usage die should cause it to diminish to the next lower die, and not 1-2. It's a better logic on something being overused. I use it on armor as a damage mitigation. D8 for heavy armor, d6 medium, d4 on light.
It doesn't make any difference to the odds. You could say that rolling low fumbles use, and therefore causes reduction.
@Willy Muffin sure, but a loss after a max roll goes down easier on the player. One great result with a loss. Engineered for greater table satisfaction.
@@brianfroeschner6644 Whatever works at your table 🙂
I hate Moorcock's concept of Chaos. Gimme the Warp, and we're talking. 😈
Noooooo! 😱

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. The key word is "impromptu" in those I don't.
