  • Before lockdown WIRED visited Veolia's recycling plant in Southwark, South London, to ask about some of the most common recycling myths. Do you need to remove the plastic lid when you recycling a water bottle? What do you do with those widgets in Guinness cans? What do all the green symbols mean?
Veolia handles the waste from more than two million Londoners. Every single hour it processes 14 tonnes of recyclable content that we throw away.

I really wish there was a single set of recycling symbols that we used here in the UK, just so we can see at a glance what is, and what isn't, recyclable

The GO TO symbol in UK is from OPRL - on pack recycling label - a circular swoosh arrow - with a clear word of instruction..www.oprl.org.uk

can't you use common sense to determine if something is recyclable? ...

trollstudent Because councils are so finnicky on what can and can’t go in the recycling bin, and certain containers may be made up of different materials, some of which can be recycled, and some can’t. Sometimes looking at it alone isn’t enough

@@trollstudent How does an 82 year old person navigate this minefield? And, before you say something clever, one day you may struggle to learn things which seem apparently common sense to you today.

Thanks for making this film. We need more films like this and some longer films with even more information. People need educating about recycling! 😊

look my local supermarket removed its glass hoppers and reduced the rest to smaller bins that look as though they are just dumped in the normal trash... much of the recycling hype is cobblers/nonsense.... I was going miles out of my way to recycle my glass but no longer as Im being taken for a mug

Can someone give me reliable sources to find out reasonable explanation about those differences in England? Can't wrap my head around the issue, why system isn't a uniform solution for whole country.

@@magdalenaziokowska3723 different councils do different things.. St. Helens has a large bin for non recyclables..… a black box cardboard, pink bag for plastics and tin.. and a small grey bin for leftover food…
Whereas Liverpool… the council next door has a large bin for garden waste.. one for non recyclables and one for plastics, tin, cardboard.. but nothing for leftover food..
No idea how,the sort out the tin, metal and glass if it goes in the same bin…
