I'm with you. I find it more interesting to see the emotionally vulnerable protagonist push through when it becomes necessary. They jump a larger... "gap"(?) from their normal state and to their "time to get serious!" state, than characters like Naruto, Natsu, Ichigo or Luffy, who are always happy to go for a fight, and have an easier time getting serious.
Also makes the fights often mean more, I feel. When Tanjiro or Deku fight someone, it's usually because there's some emotional weight to the whole thing, rather than "Let's fight, dattebayo!".

Atsushi from Bungo Stray Dogs is a great example too. He’s suffered from abuse nearly his entire life, likely even from the moment he was born, and been told he was nothing but a burden, and yet he’s still so incredibly kind, compassionate and selfless towards others. He believed he was nothing but a burden on others because of his ability but by joining the ADA he starts realizing he can use it for good and starts turning that message of being a burden into a motivation for him to keep going and become stronger to protect the people he cares about so he can be someone worth living (which is just so admirable but also breaks my heart because he already was that someone in the first place) and he always shows empathy to people, even villains, that are in the same situation as him. He allows himself to be vulnerable and cry and doubt himself, but he never gives up on his drive, also thanks to the people around him like Dazai and Kunikida who remind him to never falter in his goals. Just such a strong willed, competent and loveable character. My boy’s got a big heart and deserves nothing but love

Everyone has different taste in what kind of MC they find more relateable or just like more to watch, that's why I like that ,while the trends of what is popular shifts between the extremes, there were almost always shows of the whole spectrum present. Two examples (there are way more i just list 2 with huge popularity as the list would become to big elseway) of empathic MCs in the past would be the old UC Gundam series in the 80th wich had several empathic MCs and relateable enemies or Neon Genersis Evangelion in the 90th with an MC who gets psychologically devasted over beeing forced to fight by his father.

A good message that Deku embodies is a bit of a twist on the classic Shonen motto of never giving up. As much as people like to say, Deku’s life was not solved just because he never gave up before All-Might. He still has his struggles both internal and external. He has to question his morals, his view point on heroes, and the fact that there are others he feels would’ve been better than him with One For All. He also loses more fights than people would like to say and he hasn’t won all that many fights ON HIS OWN. Anime wise, Gentle and La Brava is the only fight he’s won completely on his own against villains. Deku is meant to say, “Don’t give up, life will solve itself!” He’s meant to say, “Don’t give up guys, life will eventually get easier. You’ll still have your problems and struggle but it will eventually get better.”

Saying all Deku does is cry is demonstrably untrue, though; he cries, more often than many others I guess, but he spends most of his time punchkicking or kickpunching things while trying to save everything but himself. He almost never, after the early parts of the series, gets paralyzed by his emotions; even when he's feeling them, he's thinking and acting to resolve situations.

The emphasis and the focus on Tanjiro and Deku's softer display of masculinity and being in touch and unashamed of their emotions is generally one of my favorite things. When I watched Demon Slayer, easily my favorite part was how kind and warm Tanjiro was. I already had been watching BNHA by this point, but seeing Tanjiro's take on that sort of emotionality just drove this new wave home harder. He's so gentle, and kind, and loving and strong and it was so wonderful. I love that not only is he a boy and doing this, but he's the PROTAGONIST. Soft male characters are often regulated to the side, not the forefront and I love this changing mindset.
It's not healthy to ignore trauma, and I like that healthy emotional expression and growth is at the forefront now, and that negative consequences to unhealthy coping or habits are actually present in the media, too. They've always been pretty present (most of the lone wolf, angsty stoic characters are this), but I feel like the media as a whole is actually taking more consideration into those habits as being problematic and what can be done to help them instead/what could have happened if they had gotten help. Or even just showing the characters as they are, letting them stay at the bottom or a darker, less moral person than where they started but with it being taken seriously and make sense for the story and their progression (ie Kaneki from TG, Eren from AoT, Rock from Black Lagoon).
Sasuke, though, is a good case of an author not putting much thought into how to have a character grow positively after trauma. There was his descent into being an antagonist, but as for how he became a hero again, and a friend to Naruto again... basically skipped a lot of that growth. Scar (specifically from FMAB) is a great example of how his arc could've been written, and what it looks like when an author takes that into consideration. Kurapika's (HxH) character arc isn't finished yet, but Togashi is great at dealing with this sort of thing (look at Killua and Gon) so I have no worries about him taking Kurapika's issues seriously.
Emotional growth and progression is my absolute favorite part of stories in any medium, and I absolutely love that it's getting more emphasis in the mainstream. That, combined with kind, compassionate heroes that are just as strong as their stoic and/or angry counterparts (the narrative parallels between Shouto, Deku, and Bakugo and the growth they're all going through is why they're one of my favorite Big Three/Golden Trio characters in media) and aren't considered lesser men for it is one of the greatest things that media is bringing to culture and the people within it. I love it so much, it's seriously so near and dear to my heart. Thank you for doing a video on it and showing your love for it as well.

I think the pinnacle of this new shonen archetype is Thorfinn from the new Vinland Saga, right after where the anime ends. His father Thors sums this all up: "a true warrior has no need for a sword," because as he says: "You have no enemies." Thorfinn's arch is a young boy living within the patriarchal death cult of Norse Vikings following the code of conduct for vengence, and it all comes crashing down once it is revealed how empty it is. And so, having been a soldier, he must carry the dead on his back to find a better place for himself and those lost.

I’d like to add some food for thought to the conversation. While I agree seeing the soft side of deku an tanjiro is a refreshing change of pace for the shonen narrative it’s not something I wanna see constantly but I DO wanna see it consistently. What I mean is while goku naruto and luffy are head strong their characters are shaped by their back stories. Goku sayan heritage is what drives him to the next fight but he’s still grounded enough to protect others. Naruto had no one his whole childhood and the village hated him it make sense that he’s not the most emotionally intelligent, and Luffy was a starry eyed crybaby before he met ace and sabo. There are other examples for different shonen characters but what I’m trying to say is I like the variety between characters. There have been other SJ characters that were soft like Tsunayoshi from hitman reborn that I enjoyed and harder characters like yusuke from yu yu hakusho. I like the the backstory and motivation for each character that makes them who they are, not the fact that their emotional or stoic. Senku from dr.stone is another example. He’s not the most sensitive or tactful character there is but he shows his love for his friends by actions, even on his birthday when he got that gift (no spoilers) he wasn’t overly emotional even though I actually kinda teared up at the scene. What I’m trying to say I is want to see variety not a template. I want characters to be varied all around in the next generation of shonen that means soft, tough, smart, dumb, man, or women so long as the character depth is explored as to why the are the way that they are. Sorry my explanation is so long worded but I wanted to get my point across the best way I could. If you made to the end I appreciate your time. Great video btw, love your channel👍

He is also very brutal with his enemies. But, Kenshiro also had qualities that were unique for shounen protagonists at the time. He was kind to children, showed compassion and empathy, and was very in touch with his emotions (and, notably, does NOT hide this side of himself). You know, I read all of Hokuto no Ken and you pretty much got all of Kenshiro wrong. In the first chapter we see him use his martial arts to cure an orphan kid from her inability to speak and only does any violence when said kid is threatened. He adopts a young thief to pull him away from the bad path, he openly weeps for every death, friend, civilan and foe alike and even finds redeemable qualities in the bloodthirsty conquerors that he defeats. You can actually find his face on the TV tropes page for manly tears.
Aditionally, his training was not complete, the final secret of Hokuto was locked behind him undestanding and feeling the ultimate sadness, Kenshiro was not really a stoic guy, he was a caregiver and a protector.
Don't get me wrong, there's a billion things in Hokuto that wouldn't fly in these times (looking at you, Rei), but if you compare Kenshiro to his 80's action flick inspirations or even to some characters these days (like all of those interchangeable isekai fuckboys), dude is actually quite emotionally rich...
Ok, rant over. You're right about pretty much everything else, shonen heroes are becoming more mature and emotionally intelligent. It's just that Kenshiro and Kenshin did it first.

Piccolo is the best dad in DBZ! Scolds Goku everytime he does something dumb. He sacrificed himself for Gohan and cries admitting how much he cares for him! Tried to train self-centerd Gotenks! He even plays with baby Pan and knows all her likes and dislikes! All around father figure!

This video topic is great in regards to this take on shonen protagonist characters, especially with Deku (who many make fun of for being a cry-baby). Even Bakugo has more of the vibe of a traditional shonen protagonist personality wise compared to Deku, although the way he acts is a little more extreme. Deku has more of an air of realism with an adolescent character facing the pressure he has with his powers and responsibility (I mean think about where you were at 15 -16 years old - a time where people struggle with responsibility, face insecurity, and are looking for identity). Many may prefer more 'feel-good' characters as a means of escapism, rather than ones who face emotional struggles and insecurity as a large part of their character arc, but I appreciate this take to give some nuance (and realism) to the formula for shonen characters.

Deku straight up didnt tattle on bakugou because he didnt want him to get in trouble even though bakugou told him to self die
Tanjirou let's demons die peacefully and acts as though everyone is his family showing kindness everywhere.
