Wow! Another exceptional video, Cary! Thanks for illustrating both the diagnostic process, repair, & the evaluation after your “intervention” with replacement of the transistor. Very same process I used in medicine for decades, as well as my previous hobby: restoration of British sports cars. Electronics are new for me, & I appreciate it when you share some of the tools of your knowledge & expertise.
Nice job! That’s a nifty little diagnostic tool. I had a system 11 game years back that one of the flashers was not working. Drove me nuts trying to find it. It turned out to be one of the ceramic resistors on the interface board😂
Excellent video (other than the music was a little too loud). Lamp Board Tester is nice as to help isolate issues between the Board, Wiring Harness and Playfield (shorts).
I needed to make sure just now if the issue was on my end or yours when it comes to audio. I can confirm that yes - the portion when I'm soldering is in fact over my typical decibel range that I aim for. I guess I missed that in editing. I'm sorry.
We have a Cyclone and the entire lamp matrix is out. I found the red and yellow plugs on the back box and reseated them. Nothing happened. I’m a complete beginner with repairing pinball machines and I have no idea what to try next. It would be easier if we had only a single row or column out but the entire matrix is broken. What should I do?
@@CaryHardy Welp that fixed it! I combed over the machine again and sure enough I missed a fuse, and that fuse I missed was dead. Replaced it, and now the lamps work again 🤠
@@CaryHardy good Lord, I’m an idiot. The link says it supports Williams and Data East, plain as day lol. I’m fighting a similar issue with my WWF Royal Rumble but only the top half of column 2 is lighting up, instead of the whole column.
Would an entire row in the lamp maxtix go dead from a bad Tip Resistor? I have checked all diodes and wires so I’m guessing that’s my next step.. I though you needed to test the Tips out of circuit to get a real reading..
@@timballwizard don't rule out a leaky diode on the bulbs themselves and/or a faulted bulb socket. I have another lamp matrix video dealing with my Back to the future machine if you wanted to see if that helps.
@@CaryHardy I resent swapped led in the chest of my pinbot and two nights ago lost the entire bottom row and Mars/light extra ball row.. I found a small screw lying on the light extra ball socket and think it might have shorted the row.. are you saying a bad LED in the chest board could kill the row?
That wouldn't "bullet proof" it. That would only increase the chances for another issue. On boards of this age you don't want to replace unless it fails. Traces and contacts can lift and then you got bigger problems. Bullet proofing is only needed to fix an actual design flaw or parts that are prone to fail due to age. Capacitors are a great example.
What do you use for diagnosing lamp matrix issues for Williams pinball games systems1-8? Because this will only work for Williams systems 9 to 11. I'm not sure what to use for diagnosing lamp matrix issues for bally, gottlieb pinball games
@@waynegram8907 Even if you check out the other link in the description to the people that make the board - the product description specifies it works for system 3 and up. You may just have to alter the wiring harness. The siege website gives you a wiring diagram too.
@@CaryHardy ok thanks maybe on siege website the company the actually makes the text fixture must have to re-wire the wiring harness for other pinball games like bally, gottlieb and other Williams games
Funny i also got this very same Q58 transistor (TIP 42) shorted a year ago or so on my BK2K system 11B MPU. Fault was easy to spot as i had several lamps constantly lit + very bright on the playfield that belonged to the same column on the lamp matrix. Replaced it with a TIP 42B (higher voltage tolerance) and it worked flawlessly since then :=)).

Very nice...I have seen those boards before but never really knew how they worked. Thanks Cary.
Great video Cary! Will help alot of people!
Excellent demo! Very useful tool and diagnostic approach demonstration.
Nice lamp tester, easy diagnostics. And great job!
Great video Cary, very informative and easily understood by everyone.. great stuff!
Very handy device! Great work 👍🏼
Siegecraft makes some great test products. Great for going through a board on the bench or in the cabinet.

Cary Hardy - 20 lashes for violating decibel rules!

Check the corresponding fuse(s). When it comes to checking fuses - Google is your friend.

Will this work for Data East games, or do they have an equivalent model?
Follow the link and see. I don't know off the top of my head.

So I plugged it into the board and all the tests are fine. I guess this definitely indicates the issue is somewhere with the play field wiring.

TIPs can be tested just fine in circuit. There is a TIP for the column and a TIP for the row.

would you actually replace all 6 transistors to bulletproof it?
