  • I went over to my good friend and great horseman, Jeff Forestell to talk everything bits.
He loves them and is very knowledgable on the mechanics and when to switch up your headgear. Here is part 1 of our discussion on some of the barrel racers top bits and how he likes to use them.

Stupid question, but when he says “get more lift” what exactly does that mean?

no such thing!!! Lift is referring to their shoulders. Elevating them so their hip and back end will stay balanced underneath them. "Lift the shoulders and drive from behind". We have more info on this if you visit our website :) mailchi.mp/1a4036ba134b/waiting-list

On the Dave Elliot does it have a port on it and would you consider using a 3 piece with a roller instead of the solid piece or does it help to have a more solid? Also, why would you use the longer shanks vs shorter and do you prefer the straighter shank or one with a lot of curve like a sweet six? Sorry for all the questions. I’m completely new to the bit world. I have been barrel racing for all of my life, but I never really thought about why one bit would be better than another.

Thats ok no need to apologize! Elliot bits do come with broken mouth pieces so its totally up to the the feel you and your horse have. The rule is "the more breaks the more bend" so a solid one will keep a horse pretty stiff. the longer shanks are more "woah" where less shank gives more freedom. Bits are crazy, there is so much technical stuff to them. and it all depends on you and the horse
