It all depends on your horse. Some horses really work really well on the pattern in a snaffle. I like to run my horse in a snaffle if he is really supple and light. If you are moving up from a thick D-ring, I would suggest using a Charmayne James "Chappy" Lifter bit or Martha Josey's Million Dollar Bit. I use a Charmayne James "Chappy" Lifter on my barrel horse most of the time and he stays really light & responsive. Good Luck with your gelding! I hope he becomes a great barrel horse:)
