Okay, the transition between Viktor asking how much time he has left to the camera cutting to two tarot cards one being Death and another The Magician. Both have interesting meaning and are a nice symbolism
They pay so much attention to continuity. We see sevika's arm disintegrate. Then the Cape covers it until this scene. They gave the backstory for why she has a mechanical arm. They paid so much attention to how they were going to set things up. Such good writing.
@@loganreacts1794 I like that they built the tension USING screenwriting and film language techniques rather than by trying to subvert them, as seems to have become the fashion.
Amusingly enough Sevika's arm didn't disintegrate. You can see it when Silco meets Powder at the end of episode 3, when she's passed out in the arm of big tatooed dude. But it still looks like its completely unsalvageable, so that's why she has a robot arm anyway. Small detail, but everybody seems to think her arm was straight disintegrated, when in fact it wasn't.
I especially love how in the beginning of Episode 4, when she and Jinx are having a staredown after the Firelight raid on the airship, you can actually see a purple glow from the Shimmer injector under her cape preparing to activate - and then Sevika stands down, knowing she'd get in Big Trouble if she punched out the boss' daughter with her robo-arm. Such a nice nod to the power play between Sevika and Jinx.
@@tomatokage That's good detail indeed but I believe the reason she backed down at that very moment was because they heard the siren. They gotta get out of there or the enforcers would be all over.
another thing people don’t notice is that silco cleaned the water in the undercity. he fully dunks himself and jinx in the water, and in episode 3 he called it toxic. he would not do that if it was not cleaned. he does horrible things in the name of the greater good but it has always been for the people.
The Crow/Raven represents bad omens and misfortune. Perfect spirit animal for a "Jinx". Jinx shooting the bird could represent that Jinx is saying "There is only room for one of us here", or it could represent self loathing, or a self destructive nature.
Marcus's motivation for stashing Vi away in prison and telling Silco she was dead is guilt. It was an act of contrition after having made a bargain with The Devil. Not a great or glorious act but about the most you can hope for from a weak man.
Oh my god. I am legit shook to see a reactor actually *remember* that Vi blew up a building in the first episode. Most of y'all seem to forget that little detail when they see her in prison. Like, she blew up a building and stole a bunch of magic bombs. Of course she got arrested. I am legit happy that someone is keeping an open mind about Marcus; he's set up to be one of the least likeable characters in the show, but I feel like he's a lot more sympathetic if just read between the lines a little. Edit: This is just my own little theory, but Cait makes an off-hand remark that she couldn't find any record of why Vi was in prison. I think Marcus purged the record to keep Silco from finding out she was alive and having her killed.
So on Marcus, he really is someone who wants the best for the city of progress, and he doesn't like killing to do it. I missed it myself in the second episode, but when he knocks out Vi he says, "They'll kill you" as he drags her away, suggesting he did it to save her life. Though his Policing mindset still can't let her go free.
I think he's a very "the ends justify the means" type of character. He wanted to be a hero, but he saw there had to be "necessary evils" for the undercity and topside to coexist.
Something I think people miss a lot is that Marcus got himself into business with Silco because he didn't understand why Grayson had to make compromises and work with the powers that be in the undercity. Now as chief, with Grayson's blood on his hands from his mistake, he knows it's necessary but isn't in control of the dynamic like Grayson was--Silco is. A lot of people get weirdly *mad* at Marcus for being stuck under Silco's thumb. Instead of the like. 20 other things he actually did wrong lmao.
You're in the vicinity, but it's a little more than that. I'm only going to use details up to this episode in my main point, with spoilers listed at the bottom, just in case someone reads and isn't far enough along yet. I'll start by saying It's easy to forget Marcus is just a normal dude caught up in a much bigger plot, surrounded by larger-than-life characters, trying to survive the consequences of his Episode 1-3 actions. The first time we meet him, he's... well, pretty unlikable. He's an intolerant, overzealous and arrogant enforcer that didn't understand why Grayson wouldn't directly deal with the Ep.1 robbery, which frustrated him and made him feel powerless. We know through the context of indoctrination that he doesn't think much of the undercity and feels that negotiating with them is just asking to be taken advantage of, given all the tense history between Piltover and the undercity. However, because people rarely acknowledge their own naivety, he cuts a deal with Silco thinking it'll accomplish his goal of getting Vander arrested by going over Grayson's head and forcing her hand. As we know, Silco reneged on their deal, leading to Vander's capture and Grayson's death. The big difference between Marcus and Grayson is, as Aege alluded to, that Grayson was in a strong bargaining position. Her enforcers had defeated Silco and Vander's rebellion on the bridge, but instead of destroying them, she negotiated with Vander to make peace. Vander also never bribes Grayson, nor do they threaten or blackmail each other. Meanwhile, Silco tricked Marcus so that Marcus can't get cold feet and bail on their arrangement without destroying his own career. Every time they've interacted up until the end of Episode 5, Marcus continues to lose ground in their "partnership". Every time he takes a bribe, every time he covers up a crime, he breaks his own code and digs the hole deeper. In the shame of living in Grayson's shadow and knowing he had a part in it, he's caught between what's best for his daughter and what's right for his soul. We've seen plenty of context of regret and his character being humbled by what he's learned, but he's not stupid... he knows he and Silco aren't even close to being equals and that he has no leverage--unknowing from his perspective that saving Vi was as important as it was. Now understanding Grayson's patience for the undercity, his regrets pave the way to becoming party to corruption far worse than what existed previously, forcing him to maintain a dreadful status quo as the alternatives become far worse. He's simply in too deep and doesn't know how to get out by the end of Episode 5. **********************SPOILER ALERT*************************** This is why I find Marcus to be neither a bad character nor an underdeveloped one, as it may seem on the surface if you're just watching the story unfold and not paying attention. He made mistakes in pursuit of the idea that power = justice and continues to face the consequences of the rabbit hole his actions predicated. He wants out because of his daughter, but stays in because her life would be in jeopardy if he tried to go straight. In fitting with the show's common theme of fathers being undone by their daughters--even when it's not their fault--Marcus is stuck between a rock and a hard place with no clear answer as to what to do. Though he realizes the errors of his ways, he's far too complicit and becomes trapped by his actions, forced to live in violation of his own ideals because he grossly misinterpreted the world he judged. Too little, too late.
It's not really so much "forgetting who you were", as "letting it go". You've seen how much Jinx is clinging to her past, she essentially chooses to live in her trauma. What Silco's doing is, when you boil it down, a good idea, but his understanding of it is kind of twisted still. Edit: Cait said Vi has no records in the prison, no name, no crime. This goes against the idea that Marcus used her for any clout, I think he thought this is the best he could do to "save her". Remember how he said "He'll kill you if he sees you." in ep. 3.
"I wonder how their reunion's going to go..." Dude... Remember when we were all killing ourselves trying to NOT let the cat out of the bag for Episode three?? Yeah... Well this bag is WAY bigger, the cat is WAY meaner, and you are in for one HELL of a ride!
Brother, I really think people should review their reviews from Arcane after ep. 09, to see how the show played us all along. It'd be amusing for everybody, you included. I have to say, the Vi x Sevica fight is probably one of my two favorite fights in movies and tv of all time (the other is the elevator scene in Captain America 2). it's worth mentioning that this show has two honest to god bad guys, Silco and Sevica. And I love them both.
if you rewatch the end of episode 4, you can see that vi's prison ID was 516. so in roman numbers its V, I and VI. so it is her name AND a reminder of her past and the time she spent in prison.
To be fair, the bag of money that Marcus takes from Silco in this episode isn’t actually a pay off to him. It’s definitely still trashy, but it is from Silco to “the families of the fallen officers”. Marcus is taking it back to them.
I'm pretty sure it's both. You can't take that sentence literally as that's really just a very standard bribery conversation... Knowing Marcus, he will most likely make sure those families get their shares. But it definitely contains his own paycheck from Silco's perspective - he has full discretion on how to allocate that money at the end of the day.
@@eatandrun8020 Fair point. Somewhere in my mind I had decided Marcus wouldn’t accept any more blood money after episode three so when Silco says to the families, I took it at face value if only so Marcus wasn’t carrying blood money in his pocket at the end of it
@@kiarya7939 Yeah I don't think Marcus wants that blood money after Greyson's death either. But seeing how deep Marcus is at this point, I don't think he has a choice anymore.
