- The Newest $13 billion Aircraft Carrier Is Finally Ready for Combat
The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, the most expensive warship ever built, is finally ready for combat duty. The U.S. Navy quietly approved the ship for initial operations capability during the tail end of 2021.
Gerald R. Ford is the first of the Ford-class aircraft carriers; the class will eventually replace existing Nimitz-class carriers. As the first class in decades, Ford-class ships will integrate a whole slew of new technologies.

Wow, imagine, California is spending 100 billion for a "high speed" train to move 300 to 400 people from San Fran to L.A., you could have built 7 of these Aircraft carriers for one over priced Cal Trans trains, 13 billion sounds like a deal....lol
The only problem with the USS Ford was, it was a lot of brand new technology all at once. That takes time to work out. They are progressing. It’s the first of a new class. The second and follow on vessels will be easier.
@@lancebailey683 agreed, for what it is and how advanced. I thought production went well
I used to be on a high tech design team. New designs require a lot of testing, and correction of unexpected problems. It often took several years to work out all the “bugs” that turned up. We also tried to change only one thing at a time. The builders of the USS Ford are working in multiple very large and complex changes and new technology. Just the launching and landing systems required completely different spaces and equipment. They can’t readily change back to steam operation. Brand new very complex technology. This ship is packed with major new designs. Much more than just one thing to change.
All new technology designs have bugs and improvements to work out. The military lives on the cutting edge of design, just like NASA does. None of what they do is easy design work. It is easy to criticize budget overruns and delays from the outside. It’s far tougher to be working in those “fixes” on the inside, while your work is subject very public criticism.
I give the designers and engineers the benefit of patience. They will work out the USS Ford technology, and they will improve it over the coming years. It will be expensive, but that is the cost of Peace.
This is why ships should not be retired after only 50 years of service just simply upgrade them at a much cheaper cost. Like the older battle ships etc.
Park this ship and its escorts outside the Black Sea and give the Russians something to think about!
