When I worked over in the States (military) I asked my students to go through a hand drawn map I made of the USA. I started to fill it in from west to east and struggled after half way. After all I’m British. My American students then said I knew more states than Americans after high school. I see it hasn’t improved.

I'm Israeli and I knew most of the answers, I assume there were many Americans who also knew them, but obviously in videos like this they only show the ones who got it wrong, so it doesn't really say much about the average American, it only says a lot about the people we saw in the video...however from personal experience I do agree that the average American knows less about what's going on outside of their country than someone who lives outside of the US, a lot of Americans really live in a bubble.

In one of these videos, the question about who fought in the US civil war came up, and a young lady answered the Nazis vs the Germans. I wouldn’t be able to tell you when the British revolution was, or how many counties there are in the UK, but the number of states, date of the revolution/civil war, capital city, even a lot of state capitals, keep coming up in the Simpsons, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, etc.

I have to tell you that we have our share of ignoramuses as well and we have to take these videos a with a pinch of salt. However, i must say that I have a friend who lives in Tennessee who sent his 3 children to private schools because he felt the public ones just weren't up to scratch. All 3 went to university . Now i don't know if that is indicative of anything and have no way of knowing, but every American I have met was not in the slightest bit uneducated except maybe this guy I met in Amsterdam who came from Minnesota . I got chatting to him and asked him if he knew of a local restaurant he could recommend. He mentioned Susie's Café being just round the corner . Anyway, I wandered around the corner but could not find any such café, and it took me awhile before I realised he meant Suisse Cafe. Understandable mistake I guess if you don't know any French, but then he was a locksmith from Minnesota. The recommendation was good, by the way

I went to university here in AU in my early 30's, there were a lot of fresh out of high school students there, in one class the teacher asked about the wall clock for some reason, there were a few of these fresh out of high school kids who couldn't read it, I mean ok so you grew up with digital sure, but it's not some complicated device hiding the time behind an equation, but they just couldn't tell time on the wall clock, that amazed me. Another thing and this is probably common but not being able to sew, even basic sewing most of my class couldn't do, I guess this teacher asked a bunch of questions for his own amusement maybe, but I was the only one to raise my hand, a male in his 30's was the only one who could sew, I did home-ec at high school that's how I learned, I guess we were taught basic life skills back then now they more focus on other things I guess.
And yes these videos pick the worst of the bunch, even so some of these questions were just basic things like the dozen one or decade, things most people should know.

I remember Jay Leno asking random Americans on the streets and they knew almost nothing. There are many videos like this and they all show the same thing. Even American youtubers are ignorant. I saw the brilliant British comedian Al Murray talking abot the Falklands war and he said that it was a war about penguins. He said that they needed penguins to make Guinness and when you cook the birds they make the foam on top of a Guinness. The two youtubers looked at each other and said: "Is that true"? But then, ignorant people are to be found everywhere.

Amanda, I'm English 66 years old, I have travelled in America extensively. I have amazing American friends. Let me exaggerate, there are two types of Americans. There are Educated Americans, who probably have traveled the world a bit, then there is the rest of the Americans, who are OK to talk with but don't expect too much. Look, you live in the UK, Go to Glasgow on the street, but with questions referenced to Great Britain.

Anyway, I remember Jay Leno doing something similar on his show in the US. That part/segment on his show, where he went on to the streets and ask questions like these.
Many admitted to be students, some at University and on a couple of memorable occasions...they were teachers/tutors!
I remember one lady, said she was a nurse got the question, ''What is the human body's largest organ?'' wrong.
Jay, like you, pointed out...anything past your borders... no interest or knowledge... but he also found that of the people he questioned, the knowledge of the geography of the USA, and the World in general was appalling.
BUT let's face it the ones that got to air were 'cherry-picked'. Like you said above...it doesn't look good but there would have been some/many that got all the questions right.

In my college chemistry class in the 70s we were struggling with the concept of a "Mole," which, we were told, was a number of atoms or molecules equivalent to Avogadro's number. To make it simple for us, our teacher compared a Mole to a dozen, which can be 12 units of anything. I see that using the term "a dozen" to explain an unfamiliar concept might not work too well nowadays...
