    Really appreciate the walk throughs of this series! This is exactly what I was looking for the last several days to get a clear picture of setup differences between QTS and QuTS (I ultimately downgraded my H973AX to QTS for the Qtier benefits for my desired setup and workflow). Particularly helpful was the proper way to setup the SysVol/Data/Vol and Qtier - there were NO solid howtos/best-practice write ups I could find. And the clear walking through of the GUI and settings was incredibly helpful. Thank you

      If we use QuTS/ZFS and select ALL/IO in the cache settings, we get accelration in sequential writes as well, avoiding tiering. He does not mention that. In any casez reported benefita of Tiering over caching is less than 20%. Are you sure the hassle and dangers of tiering and lower IO worth the 20%, when you can have 12GB/s with an Nvme RAID??

      Qtier fragments your HDDs and expose "Fast" data out of a backup area. QuTS is the way to go. Read the manuals.

    The fact that the video is long is great. If anything, judging by the outro, I don't believe this invaluable series is going to get into ENOUGH detail.
    Some things you haven't mentioned that I would like to know:
    1. What are the bandwidth requirements for a single 8K Resolve stream? Does the addition of color nodes, denoiser, etc, make it more demanding?
    2. Could the on-board CPU of the NAS be a bottleneck if your workstation CPU is better?
    3. Does the system divide the total bandwidth across users as a layman would guess? (i.e., if the total availability is 2100MB/s, one user could pull 400, another 600, and a third 1100 before extra speed is required)
    4. Does the NAS allow you to create separate drives (system and applications, storage, and cache) that perform the same way actual separate drives would in terms of efficiency?
    5. Can you talk about expanding the NAS by combining (daisy chaining?) multiple? Will it pool the speed and capacity for infrastructures that require far more than 2100MB/s?
    I'm not sure what bandwidth requirements are in general, but I imagine ILM for example, employing a roster of hundreds or thousands of artists who run very intensive loads, need something a hundredfold what this is. I think you should try diving into those bigger systems, as speaking for myself, I can't imagine things on the scale of 10GBps Ethernet cables being sufficient.
    On another note, would love to see you getting into how render farms work and whether or not it's more efficient than rendering locally, as well as intelligent hardware breakdowns for such an operation. This is kind of the thing that sets you apart from the competition as your experienced takes are practically inexistent, on this platform or any other. Perhaps you could even dive into codecs, workflows, monitor setups and cabling. If there's any one thing in particular I think you bring to the table, it's the way your profound understanding of how hardware and software interact allows people to know exactly which computer part performs which function during which application and at what speed, so they're able to avoid overkill builds and spend their budgets better. If you value my opinion, diving deep into that... let's call it "technical tailoring" - is your channel's crown jewel; and it may be that multiple comprehensive, software-specific hardware series is the best structure for your channel (eg. Premiere Pro: covering A-Z from the ground-up, then moving on to the next, perhaps adding a general infrastructure playlist as well). Lastly, if component accessibility is an issue here, as I expect it would be, you could keep the videos theoretical just so we could take a look inside the mind of someone with your expertise.
    Apologies for the long post. I've been on a 16-hour a day binge trying to get the research in for over a week now before I build my ~50,000$ production package (cameras and memory cards all the way down to the editorial station) and your videos have been absolutely priceless. I would encourage you to set a more frequent upload schedule to cover more ground in that ocean of knowledge you have - but even with the few hours you've already shot through, the contribution has been tremendous. For that, I thank you!

      1) do a google serach for the bandwidth for 8K footage- no the nodes do not add more bandwidth
      2) No, there is not connection between the NAS CPU and the desktop CPU
      3) yes if more users are connected to the NAS they need to split the bandwidth
      4) yes you can create different storage Pools. But i would create one pool and then use Volumes to separate the data containers
      5) connecting more NAS together in this case will not increase performance. only capacity
      Most Big studios do not have super fast storage, but this do have the ability to connect 100-500 users all at a good bandwidth at the same time.
      I will be doing some videos on Deadline rendering management and how Farms work in the future
      I will also do more video on video workflow
      Thanks for watching and stay tuned for future videos

    Hi Mike - You are the best I have found on this and can understand you the most. Your delivery is perfect. I'm in a dilemma - I have a QNAP TS-h973ax, 64gb ram, 4 SSD (2 @ 3TB each - NVMe, 2 @ 4TB each - reg SSD), 5 HDD's - 20TB each, 10gb network (all in working order)... I only got to the step of finishing putting on the QuTS when I think I should do the QTS now but you didn't do it with the NVMe set up. One of the comments below said do a 3 tier and you agreed saying you did that but this above video doesn't show how to do 3 tier set up. Also - one of the comments argued saying "If we use QuTS/ZFS and select ALL/IO in the cache settings, we get acceleration in sequential writes as well, avoiding tiering which is far from ideal" and you said you need to do more test.... then I found a most recent video from QNAP UK one month ago about setup for video editing saying do QTS but do Random I/O...... Now I don't know what to do. I trust you the most but now I'm unsure with what I should do with my 2-2-5 system. Can you suggest, pretty please with sugar on top? (Where did you go, btw? We need you - you are awesome)

    Hey mike, you should look into doing some benchmarking with the software Houdini! Running FLIP simulations are extremely intensive, but particle size can be adjusted for great benchmarking stages. They can utilize multiple cores and require lots of memory. Houdini is used by all big VFX studios (including Disney who usually rely on their proprietary softwares) so I’m sure some viewers would be interested!

I found one, but it is not a good really world SIM to use. If someone can supply me with a scene and instructions on how to run the benchmark. I will make video's on this topic. It would be nice to find a CPU SIM as well as a GPU SIM.

I also found direct video's on the UA-cam channel "QNAP UK" and watched the companies videos called: "Discover the BEST Setup for 10GbE Video Editing on Your QNAP NAS" and "How to Configure DATA TIERING on Your QNAP NAS for Maximum Storage Performance". I ended up with my system and editing needs doing: QTS operating system, enabled Qtier'ing, 1 Pool, 2 tiers of: 2 Regular SSD (Raid 1), 5 HHD (Raid 6), 1 Main Volume 30TB (Thick) and Volume 2 at 27TB as cold storage (Thin) - for possible VM and expansion. Came back after config to add the 2 NvMe SSD's (Raid 1) in accelerated cache for real-time acceleration plus added storage - allocated only to the Main volume. Read/write, Random i/o, bypass 16mb,

    Why??!! Why wouldn't you use QuTS hero with its robust *ZFS?* ZFS by far is the best file system for a NAS with mechanical hard drives. The reason that I came to your channel was because of your QNAP with video editing. In my household we have a mixed-use of PCs and Macs. So I was a little taken back.
    _Just as a note, our home has a robust network with workgroup and enterprise equipment so I manage it like an office._

      I wanted the speed that you get with the QTS tiering. I tested both OS and the QuTS was 35% slower even with Caching turn on. I like ZFS, but there is performance issues with the inline compression and no Tiering. So QTS for now.

    I am setting up my QNAP 973AX with QTS tiered storage. All 5 SATA drives have 16TB Exos drives and I am using SSD 1&2 with 2TB NVMe drives. In addition I have SSD 3&4 in a different pool with 500GB SSD's. Would there be any advantage in setting up the system drive on SSD 3&4 and keep Disks 1-5 with the NVMe SSD 1&2 as data drives? If so would it be advantageous to set that system drive up as a static volume for any speed performance?

    • @mikebrown9826
      @mikebrown9826 2 роки тому

      It is best practice to set up system in the SSD. You could use the NVmE as cache drives and the SSD as tiered drives. But I would use 4 SSD drives for the tier

      Your RAID build was fast because I suspect you’re using QuTS, e.g. ZFS file system vs QTS which used the EXT 4 file system. RAID builds and rebuilds are way faster using QuTS. I believe this was covered in part 2 of the series.

      @@07Review QTS with R/W caching can be faster than QuTS under certain workflows IMO. But those RAID builds and in particular the rebuilds times using QuTS are no match for QTS. The more RAM QuTS has at its disposal for its ARC RAM read cache the better it will perform. I believe where QuTS is lacking is in the area of write caching based on my testing, especially for a random I/O workflow. This can be countered by having more “rust” spindles with the right RAID for the right workflow. I’m currently running a 4 disk RAID 10 under QuTS on my TVS-672XT (newer fixed MoB version for “red light of death” of the x72 NASs BTW) against my TS-673A running a two disk RAID 1 under QTS. Both NASs with 64GB RAM.

    Awesome video! Really helped me understand how NAS and RAID work. Quick question, after I've created my storage pool (named "Storage Pool 1 (System)" by default), I'm not able to create a volume in the storage pool. I'm only able to create a shared folder inside that storage pool. There is also a shared folder in that storage pool already, called "Public". Does this have anything to do with me only using HDD? Thanks! Again, thank you so much for all this information, it was very helpful!

    • @MediamanStudioServices
      @MediamanStudioServices  2 роки тому

      hi Leland, i am guessing that you used all of your drive space for the first Storage pool. You will notice that the Storage pool you created is labeled "System" this is correct and you should only use about 300GB for this pool. It is for the system OS and Apps that you may install not Data storage. So delete or resize this pool to 300GB. Then create another pool for your data storage. You can make Volumes inside this second Data storage pool.

    • @his_name_is_lee
      @his_name_is_lee 2 роки тому

      @@MediamanStudioServices Awesome, I'll resize it and make another storage pool. Out of curiosity, how come this is different than yours? It looks like in yours, you created a single storage pool and then created system and data volumes inside that pool. Mine seems to make a system pool (instead of volume) and then requires me to make another pool for my data (again, instead of a volume). Is this due to the fact I've used up all storage on creating the pool? Thanks again for your help, I really do appreciate it.

    • @MediamanStudioServices

      @@his_name_is_lee Sorry, I was not correct in my response. I did create a storage pool that was all of my drive space. Not much for him to say there I guess. In Vray 4090 is as strong as 2 3090s Currently in Europe a 3090 goes for 1400 Euros and cheapest 4090 I found is 2100. 4090 on current prices (understand 3090 is overpriced) is better value. You can also get an other setup, than upgrade when can afford it or 4090 drops in price. My 2 cents.

    you are an nvidia fanboy. Why you never talk about Radeon Pro gpus ?

      Because I do not do gaming reviews. Cuda is the king in the creative workflow. If AMD and the industry would come up with a solution to compete with Cuda coding in application then I would review it. OpenCL is dead.

      @@Mike_Michael1 Yes AMD works, but the Cuda rendering is so much faster. Render per Dollar counts.
