    I was hoping someone would make a video on this. I have been searching for an alternative to marriage for ages, one that recognises two people, not a conjoining. The ritual of marriage is actually frightening to me.

      Look up common law marriage. You don't ask the state permission to marry. There are a few UA-cam videos on it

    I had seen this years ago and rewatching it, I shed a couple tears. I always thought it was beautiful but now that Im going to marry my partner next winter, it's even more beautiful to me. And Handfasting makes more sense than a Christian ceremony as I agree that two people are their own whole selves rather than two halves.

    I didn't know anything about handfasting, but after seeing your video, i'm really interested to learn more about it. I am more a spiritual person than a religious one, so I feel it would fit me better than a "traditional normal" wedding.

    Sounds like a beautiful ceremony! It's so thoughtful and personal. The thing you said about you two being two different people with different working minds but making the commitment to work together as a team really inspired me. Thanks for sharing :)

    I've always been very opposed to the idea of ever getting married because I don't agree with the connotations of the traditionnal Christian wedding, but this ceremony seems so meaningful and just sincere and powerful, I really want to learn more about it :)

    Lovely video and looked to be a lovely handfasting. My husband and I got handfasted as well and its super funny because some of his family members were trying to be shady and kinda hateful and told other family members who did not attend our handfasting that I tied him up during the ceremony. We were rolling with laughter at that

    Thanks for sharing! My husband and I also did a handfasting. I love seeing how other people did it! We also made our own cords and also had uber-religious family members to contend with, and everyone still thought it was beautiful. Since we're agnostic with interests in paganism and not actually practicing pagans, we used it in place of lighting a unity candle/pouring sand/whatever that usually goes in a secular wedding. I hope this encourages other people to consider incorporating a handfasting ceremony :)

    we did a handfasting too! And I made our ropes and added trinkets to the ends that symbolized us. and we had members from our fellowship who preformed the wedding. we used lines from the poetic edda. we hailed Thor and frigga. we did a very viking /celtic wedding !

    I do not know how I have missed this video for so long. I love you and your videos; you, as a person are awesome! Your handfasting was beautiful! My husband and I wanted a handfasting ceremony. Family members made our ceremony planning so stressful and negatively emotional because of their beliefs and religious affiliation that I couldn't go forward with it. We wound up doing a self marriage at the court house. Not a traditional justice of the peace type ceremony but, a self marriage. Then the individuals who were trying to sabotage our marriage ceremony due to differing beliefs didn't get to be present at all. We didn't want these immediate family members bringing their negativity on the first day of our sacred union. We did promise each other we would have our handfasting on our terms in our time. Our 10th anniversary is coming up. So. maybe this year.

    I've been engaged for a while now and we just don't really know how to go about a weeding. I just wanna run away and get married. Whats the point of spending all this money on a wedding for all these fucks we dont even talk to, lol. Plus people just coming to get wasted and ew. And he wants a traditional wedding but I reallly love this I'm not religious neither is he, and I really didn't want a christian priest, I just thought it was wrong. This is such a romantic different idea that is just for us, I'm so excited to share this with him and see what he thinks! Thank you so much for this, it has made my day! You have no idea we don't even talk about wedding stuff we both get stressed out about money and I don't like people and so much stupid family drama blah blah blah, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

      +paperseatbelt I completely understand how you feel about that. My fiance and I are getting married this October, and we are NOT having a traditional wedding. I thought I really wanted one, but when it came down to pricing everything and realizing that we would probably have to postpone a honeymoon because of wedding costs, I put my foot down. If a wedding is something you and your fiance do not want, DO NOT GIVE IN TO PRESSURE TO HAVE ONE. Or, if your family wants one, tell them to pay for it. My fiance and I are having our friend who is a notary marry us on the spot he proposed to me, and then we are traveling for 2 weeks. We wouldn't have been able to put so much money aside for a 2 week trip had we gone through with the wedding plans. The ceremony is definitely a party for your friends and family, BUT if it's not want you want, there is no reason to go through with it. Please do what you feel comfortable doing, not what everyone else expects you to do, and if this hand fasting fits you, go for it! Best wishes to you and what YOU and your partner decide. :)

    Congrats on your handfasting! Even if we didn't get to see your husband's face, totally understandable why not, I'm sure he looked as dapper as you looked lovely~
    TJ and I got legally married on Oct 3, 2014 at the local courthouse, but I still had my heart set on a handfasting for when we were financially able to host a wedding for friends and family. I'm a solitary witch, and I didn't have a priest or priestess within even an hour of where we currently live. Therefore, all the preparations had to be made by me while a dear friend of ours was kind enough to perform the actual handfasting ceremony for us on July 25th of this year.
    I'm not out of the broom closet to my family, but TJ's family and all of our friends are aware of my craft and spiritual beliefs. We chose to focus on the historical relevance of handfasting rather than the religious, and we even welcomed my mom, who is a steadfast Christian, to do her own reading. It actually perfectly fit with the nature-based reading I had chosen for our ceremony, without either of us having shared our selection with the other. I think her reading helped put both families more at ease even without a Christian ceremony or a pastor being present.
    I had a white cord with the Tree of Life as a charm, and TJ had a black cord with a piece of sea glass. Our altar had an offering, an infused candle for each of the elements and a central pillar candle for the gods. We couldn't light the candles because it was so windy, but it was otherwise just how I pictured it for the year before. The whole ceremony was finished in eight minutes.
    Just don't be like us and forget to kiss at the end!

    I am pagan and most of my family is christian. Since I relate so much with Irish traditions we decided to honor the tradition of using the handfasting as an engagement period. So we will have the handfasting with a very small group of people and no extended family just those closest to us we know will be ok with the ceremony. Then after a year and a day ( few days in our case if we get the dates we want) we are going to have the full less pagan wedding. Thats the one where the extended family will be invited and the one we will make the marriage legally binding. We wanted a two year engagement so this worked out perfectly for us. Details are still in the works as the handfasting isnt until the end of october this year.

    i love this!!!my fiance and i are non-denominational,open-minded Christians,and we each have had a long journey to where we are at in our lives right now.we are not perfect,and we are still working on getting to where we want to be,so this ceremony would be perfect for us.we are just gonna do the ceremony,and just get a marriage license later on because of personal reasons,and the ceremony will be really small for us,with just his parents and brother and sister-in-law,because I personally don't keep in contact with my blood family;his family is my family. :) i appreciate the idea about the cords,and the cupcakes.that way we can keep costs low,and still have a very meaningful ceremony for us.we will have Ecclesiastes 4 :9-12 read at our ceremony as well.
    "9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken."

      Yes, historically they were done because it could take months for an official from the church or state to come and bear witness so the community witnessed the wedding and a leader officiated, it represented the joining of two hearts in harmony as the hands are the most used part of the body.

I believe you have to go to the courthouse no matter what when getting married in the US... which is done normally just a few days before the wedding takes place.

    • @chelsear9483
      @chelsear9483 7 років тому

      Morgan Myers Yes, you can find ones that will help you combine all religions and make everyone comfortable, but you should remember that this is your wedding and you should do what you want. I'm Muslim and my SO is arabic and muslim, but I am actually Irish. I will be combining muslim, handfasting and Hari Krsna traditions into my wedding ceremony. It's my wedding not his family nor my family, if they don't want to come they don't have to. If they love us both and care about us then what I chose (or you) won't matter because they will want us to be happy. Best of luck.

    • @LDaemontus
      @LDaemontus 8 років тому

      +KrystenMotionless It's just like any other wedding except the ceremony itself is different. They would of signed the marriage certificate and had witnesses at the ceremony etc like any other wedding. You can have whatever ceremony you like as long as the ones doing the ceremony like a priest or priestess are legally trained to do so and that you have the two being married plus witnesses to sign the certificate.
