- Here is Margaret Lockwood in this wonderful composition which comes from the British War Time Film "Love Story" and starred Margaret as a lady concert pianist. The music was written by Hubert Bath. The pianist is Harriet Cohen
Beautiful my favorite song of all time!!!
In a BBC TV interview that Margaret Lockwood gave back in 1974, she was asked about this very same thing (about how authentic her playing looks) and she stated that Hubert Bath himself taught her this piece and how to perform it in front of a movie camera. She then went on to say, she was already a talented pianist before he taught it her, but, learing this piece made her even greater.
What a lovely scene....a lovely women playing her heart out with lovely music.
Happy Birthday to Hubert Bath 🛁🚿 his Birth Card is Ace of Diamond 💍💎 Merry Christmas ☃️🎄 Blessings and Hugs 💖💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕!
A “tour de force”. I saw the film for the second time last week and was moved to tears😢. Although the plot has a few intermittent quirky elements, they are few and far between. At the end of the day one is left with a powerful emotional experience of some magnitude. In some ways it is undefinable and more than the sum of its parts. Perhaps it expresses a certain feeling or ethos felt by some people in Britain during a certain period of the war. Bravo 👏!
I saw this movie many years ago and fell in love with the music and with Cornwall. What lovely memories.
There's a cut in the cadenza at 4:18 of about four measures, at least based on what Pennario plays. Perhaps P added it. This is the best concert playing mime I have ever seen in a movie. I was convinced even during the cadenza that she was playing the real notes because her fingers are actually playing a b7 arpeggio at the end of it. Contrast this with Katherine Hepburn's atrocious mine in Song of Love. This is one of the three GREAT movie concertos, alongside Warsaw and Swedish Rhapsody.
Lovely music
Amazing piece of music. Beautiful Margaret Lockwood. What a talented and accomplished artist, I can't believe she also played the piano so wonderfully.
She didn't. As per the description above, the pianist was Harriet Cohen. Lockwood did, however, work hard to mime playing sections of the music convincingly.
I read she really learned to play the music properly, was coached by Harriet Cohen and spent hours practising. Although the sound she makes is not the sound on the film sound track she really is playing the notes and, as she says, "making not too many mistakes".It is by far the most convincing movie actor's portrayal of a pianist playing, that I have ever seen.
@@CharlotteinWeimar Agreed. She looked extremely convincing at the piano, which is a rarity in movies. I seem to remember Ingrid Bergman being fairly convincing, too, in Intermezzo.
Thank you for posting this!! I really like Love Story - and this music!
Very nice. Margaret Lockwood did a great job impersonating Harriet Cohen.
this song is a masterpiece! first time I see the movie
I just discovered I have this on 12"/78rpm. I can't play it as my deck doesn't play 78's so thanks for posting it - I'm missing out on a lovely piece of music.
Wonderful! Margaret mimes it so well, she could be playing it. Hubert Bath, Charles Williams, M.Rozsas, Richard Addinsell - love these guys. They call this "light classical music?" Just the same, so enjoyable.

+kerryincolumbus : I had to listen to this again. If she was capable of performing this work, why not do that? Great promo for the film at the time. Just a thought. I found that interview you wrote about and will listen to it now. Thanks for your comment.
+BroadwayG Sorry, the interview was in 1980 not the one you referred to.
I recorded Chopin’s Ballades Nos. 1 and 4 for a movie once. It was a fun project. The movie had already been recorded, so I had to match the tempo of the pianist. The actor could sort of play; just like this woman. She was actually covering the right notes for the most part, by the way. While I recorded the music, the video of the actor playing was in my monitor so I could synch it. It’s probably the opposite of what people think. The music comes last, and the video is usually finished before the music is added.
Bravo! Cheers from Brazil
Just brilliant, a wonderful film!!!
What a beautiful piece. :)
yes I adore this film and piece of music too! trailer somebody!
you are absolutely right! she could be Joan Bennett's sister, good eye!
Ausgezeichnet!!!!!!!!!!
Fascinating. Thanks for that interesting info. Ms. Lockwood reminds me of that grand dame of Colinwood in Dark Shadows, Joan Bennett. Hope that a compliment.
Tenho em disco.
Actually, yes, Hubert Bath (whose great grandson I am) gave Margaret Lockwood some tuition to make her miming more convincing.
Constance? ;-)
Une très belle page concertante qui malheureusement n'a à ma connaissance, jamais été programmée en concert en France, ou alors il y a bien longtemps.
Il en est de même pour des œuvres analogues , ce qui est fort dommage !
Modern day actress's just can't touch her.
A great and beautiful theme, but for my taste it's a bit over-cooked and frantic, especially in this 'Love Story' version.
