“Dear Leonard. To look life in the face. Always to look life in the face and to know it for what it is. At last to know it. To love it for what it is, and then, to put it away. Leonard. Always the years between us. Always the years. Always the love. Always the hours.”
My mother used to listen to this specific track when she got chemo.. It was a sound she could relate to in some way, used it to find peace in her mind, in her situation.. I hope she found peace listening to it when we played it at her funeral. Beautiful music
I'm always in wonder at how Glass' music summons up a real reflective mood. I'm very glad that his genius is alive in our time. My sincere wishes that you are consoled. Loss is a bitter thing.
I visit my friend "N" who is slowly slipping into a form of dementia. She can't form coherent thoughts or express them in words. She can't follow the story line of the simplest TV plot. She sometimes looks blankly at me not sure who I am. But... when I slip the headphones on her and play this music from The Hours, she lies back peaceful. " I could listen to this music all day", she says.
The first time I watched this movie at the cinema I felt so moved by the music that I cried. Philip Glass has the power to touch your heart like very few artists.
I've got this music from a good girl friend seven years ago as a Valentine gift. Unfortunately she left me for someone other. I never could forget her anymore and hence I listened hundreds of times this CD at highest possible sound level. Marielou I' can't forget you but wish you all the luck you can get in your marriage with Leon.
I listen to this section of music on my train journey to work into the centre of London of London five days a week.Such beauty it saves me from madness
this song was one of the things that kept my spirit alive when I was in a really bad stage of my life. All the credit goes to Philip Glass, musical genius.
It's really quite sad that people my age don't enjoy this music.. Philip Glass's compositions are truly amazing. Listening to this makes me proud to be a musician.
My 5 year old son is battling severe heart disease. Today at the children’s hospital he left a note on the tree of hope that said “thank you God for this day” I turned on Mozart before this and he told me “too many violins” I have no one to share these days with. He is precious to me though I am going on 48,000 hours of work without a break.
"Dear Leonard, To look life in the face, always - to look life in the face, and to know it for what it is. At last, to know it. To love it, for what it is, and then... to put it away. Leonard, always the years between us, always the years. Always, the love. Always, the hours."
I almost lost my life in a hospital years ago. This awesome piece helped me to recover. I listened to it each day, many times the same day because I loved it. I got acquainted to it through the movie .
along with the brilliance of Streep, Moore, Kidman, Harris, Danes, and Janey.... this music was a large part of the success of this movie...outstanding!
This was mine and my late husband’s signature piece of dinner music. And after dinner… And lovemaking… Thank you Philip Glass for making great memories for us.
hey, ıts not warm or hot its cold night but dark and we have wind in here Münster, Germany. I listened it in a that condition with an open window. I loved . Your description is good.
Les photographies sont pour la plupart remarquables de sensibilité et évocatrices tout en accord avec cette sublime musique qui accompagne si bien ce chef d'œuvre : The hours
Poem I wrote to this piece (hope you enjoy): Let the fire blaze, and shine a light of freedom, Let the fog fade, to clear a path for redemption, Let your clothes stain, rain blood, sweat and tears of fears for the future, You will remain standing, no matter landing, Make us proud. Make some noise. Make it loud. Do not search for your path let the wind blow you where it may, do not fight it, invite it. Wear your scars as a medal of honour, and sacrifice, of all things you've lost and conquered what do you long for? if I stripped you of everything you had what would you run towards? And now that you venture into the light, Its warmth will surprise you, But don't let it lie to you too much and it blinds you, and in a blink of an eye everything turns dark; and so you will fade into the unforgiving winters trying to remind yourself of summer, Do not fight it, invite it, And let the wind blow you where it may.
Played it again today. It's haunting and, accompanied by such wonderful photography, stays with you. Glass is a truly magical composer who is sorely needed on today's lacklustre music scene.
I agree with all of you. The song is enchantingly beautiful. I've always enjoyed it but now I like it even more on account of your story involving your mother, DEVERMEIRE. I lost my own mom 4 years ago this on this Month and I feel for you. May the peace of God guard your heart and your mind.
Brings tear to my eyes... I don't know if it makes sense.. But i have such a connection with this song.... it makes everything worse. But so much better. Beautiful. Just Beautiful.
Philip Glass gave the modern audience what they want, which is consistent volume and tempo suitable for intimate sounds between earphones or enclosed personal spaces, and hidden melody that can be singed along, it is an adaptation when musicians can no longer confine their audiences in one venue and have their inescapable attention. (Means in the old days, audiences have to go on the ride of volume, tempo and mood swings a live show can offer, but not for busy serial fragmental music listeners of the modernity, who wants to avoid adjusting volumes between piano music and pop, and distracted by the bi-polar swings of some classical pieces. ) While a lot say it is minimalism, I don’t think so. It has all elements of the attractions of other already proofed classical music, like tensional melody, subtle tempo change, narration with a climax, it is just that those elements are spread into a slower time frame than expected from the familiar by and hidden among atmosphere notes(yep, I think that is what those repetition notes are). That is why when professional pianists demonstrate Glass’ pieces in higher tempo and help the ears to find melody, and differentiate layers, these elements are revealed and resulting in absolute captivating music.
This is probably the most beautiful music I have ever heard man create. Falling to devistation in a society where man is at mans throat. Made with love, born into hate, it seems like there is little left that is so moving or beautiful. You have to truely find it and my god.... does Philip Glass really nail that beauty. Thank you so much
I found this on KUSC classic radio. Unbelievable the beauty. I feel like I am wrapped in a silk ribbon and lifted from this earth.

Just played this piece today in new years concert at one place in Holland.. Next to pieces by Bach, Scarlatti, Ravel and Debussy. I could hardly think of any other musical piece more perfect for Virgina Woolf ...
This is her, entirely.
Should have definitely gotten the Oscar for best original score. Well, even without the statuette, it is a masterpiece.
I was listening to it yesterday and wondering "he must had gotten the Oscar for it, is impossible that he didn't". And well, I checked out, he didn't.
