  • Video shot on Feb 8, 2013, in the afternoon.
Driving mostly in Downtown Toronto and a bit in the suburbs.
For my own winter driving tips or "advices" on how to safely and not necessarily slow driving on snow, please read the info on the hwy video shot on Feb 8, 2013 as well.
Pay attention to how my FWD car with a very good set of 4 winter tires reacts to the huge amount of snow on the roads plus pretty icy under the snow.
Full of cars and trucks unable to drive uphill, BMWs very bad on snowy roads, no idea why, maybe they are RWD?
And I'm done with winter driving, personally I hate it but sometimes not much we can do.
Back to FL driving in my next videos.
Music recorded LIVE on SiriusXM sat radio, Ch 52, Electric Area, and DJ Tiesto and his weekly show Tiesto Club Life, Ep. 305.
    Drive safely.

That's typical winter weather where I live. AWD and proper winter tires help nicely.

NA is a huge continent, for instance in Calgary it starts snowing in Nov when in Toronto mostly in Jan or Feb. Toronto is warmer than Chicago or Denver or Minneapolis. So over here you gotta go region by region or city by city to make a profile on a particular area.
Local authorities try to clean the roads asap, they are mostly successful BUT if it's heavy snowing right in the middle of morning rush hrs or evening, traffic will be obviously a mess.
    Be safe out there.

As long as you drive a FWD or 4x4 vehicle WITH good snow tires AND some sort of driving experience on snowy roads, rest is just history.
Been twice to your very beautiful state, from Portsmouth, NH to Portland to your state capital Augusta to Bangor to Houlton and then all the way north to Madawaska and then west to the very end of the whatever only country road in that very remote area. Obviously summer time only. For obvious reasons lots of Maine snowbirds down in Florida from Nov to April.

FWD + 4 Snow tires(Blizzaks, Winterforce, etc.) = very capable. 4WD + Snow tires = Awesome. I have experience with both and have always enjoyed driving in extreme winter conditions. FUN FUN FUN....

IMO none of the above matters the most IF the driver has none or limited driving experience on snowy and/or icy roads.
      Drive safely and stay warm.

If you've been driving in the snow since 1984 that would put you in your 40's. I thought i was the only old timer who loved house music etc. Awesome tunes!

City trucks are all ready for "action", so full of salt on them, BEFORE the snow storm starts, they are never unprepared to jump in action as soon as the official min limit of snow has accumulated on city streets. But there is a min snow limit for residential streets and another one for large boulevards also another min limit for hwys, priorities are 1) hwys 2) large boulevards 3) residential streets. Also for hwys they spray them up with a special liquid to prevent ice on the road.

Just came back from a beautiful 1-week road trip to New England including your own gorgeous state, crossed the border from Edmundston, NB and then all the way down to NH, Boston and Cape Code. Tons of great videos on my laptop ready for U/L soon.
    Be safe out there.

Holy Moly, that's what I call snowy city roads! I hope the stormy winter weather in TO has calmed down, maybe fun for some ppl to drive on these roads one time, but everyday....that's another story LOL
Is there any mandatory for winter tires in Ontario?
BTW a BMW without RWD is no real BMW, old tradition of them, I don't even think that they have one single FWD model out there as per now.
    Drive safely.

Hi Michael, very ugly in Boston, NYC and parts of CT, 2-3 times more snow than you see in my videos. Actually they banned all road travel in MA and CT for the duration of the storm and maybe after as well to allow clean-up.
Personally I don't know if even with a set of very good FOUR winter tires a RWD (BMW or whatever) vehicle will give you the same peace of mind in driving on snow as you always get from a FWD, AWD or 4x4 vehicle.
IMO never buy a RWD if you have to deal with snowy winters.

  • @ChrisRoadWarrior
    @ChrisRoadWarrior  11 років тому

    Hi Michael,
It lasted just 12 hrs, but 34 cm in total snow, that's nothing compared to NE USA where they have btwn 50 and 100 cm of snow accumulations, they banned all road travel in CT and MA.
Today Monday we had +7C and rain in Toronto but now we have big problems with flooding, and if you're a pedestrian...
No, winter tires are not mandatory in Ontario but in Quebec they are Dec-April. But extremely useful to run on 4 winter tires plus a FWD car.
Really, all BMW's are RWD? WHY?
    Be safe.

A FWD (that's the abbreviation for Front Wheel Drive) car with a set of FOUR (4) Winter Tires = "he's very nice in snow".
For ppl that drive a lot in snow year after year, all they have to do is buy or rent or lease a FWD vehicle (its their responsibility to know what vehicles are FWD or RWD or AWD or 4x4) and then install a set of 4 winter tires on it. But even that they properly do that, driving experience on snow is CRUCIAL, in my case since 1984.
    Be safe.

    Hi Michael,
Personally no idea which ones are more helpful on snow, winter tires (4, not just 2) OR tire chains? I've never used tire chains as they are illegal anywhere in Ontario from south of North Bay but legal north of North Bay, also I've never had the "opportunity" to drive anywhere outside Ontario during the winter months, hate taking long road trips from Nov to April.
Gotta flush the toilet, State of the Union Address is coming up next. LOL

i like your driving style quick and controlled.
as for winterdriving: i like RWD on winter tires the best but only because powersliding is so much FUN!
But FWD and AWD on winter tires are superior on winterroad.

"BMW stays with RWD because of the advantages that it offers in handling over FWD"
True but not during snowy moments even with a set of FOUR very good (lots of meat) winter tires.
I used to drive my parents' LADA 1200, you know that HORRIBLE Russian car, from '84 to '88 while back in RO, my very first crash was in '85 on... SNOW & ICE on the road, wasn't able to control the car on a sharp curve. Lesson learned, never drove a RWD car anymore.
Are tire chains legal in PA, illegal in South Ontario.

Hi! I've got a question; how long does it take the road maintenance services to clear the roads in Toronto? Cause one guy on YT says it's a matter of two days till they put the snow on trucks and get it out of town. Also, I saw many times on TV how severe winters can be in North America. I reckon the news shows it to us (Poles) as a sensation due to our light winter, thus people here think winter is all the time like that in N.America, and people can't drive anywhere. Which isn't truce cause...

  • @Xjarq
    @Xjarq 11 років тому

    Hi Chris,
yes, I guess NE USA got hit very bad compared to TO but ~ one foot of snow is still enough to cause a lot of trouble in such a big city, right? Also 7C is pretty warm after such a massive storm, doesn't surprise me at all that you have big flooding problems.
Also about BMW, of course you can get AWD (their famous xDrive system) but all of their cars come standard with RWD, part of their "culture", FWD doesn't fit into a sport-handling philosophy, right?
    Stay safe.
    Michael

And that's it, RWD cars simply handle better on dry roads BUT I don't think the average John Doe will drive a street race every day so pretty much no difference at all between RWD and FWD, at least on dry roads. Also a FWD car with four winter tires will always handle better than a RWD with four ones, it's just a weight issue.
But at the end, no matter if you have FWD or RWD, it's always a matter of how you drive, you can get stuck with the most expensive winter tires if you "want" LOL
