- Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, later Philip Mountbatten; 10 June 1921 - 9 April 2021), was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. He was the consort of the British monarch from Elizabeth's accession on 6 February 1952 until his death in 2021, making him the longest-serving royal consort in history.
Philip was born in Greece, into the Greek and Danish royal families; his family was exiled from the country when he was eighteen months old. After being educated in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, he joined the Royal Navy in 1939, when he was 18 years old. In July 1939, he began corresponding with the 13-year-old Princess Elizabeth, the elder daughter and heir presumptive of King George VI. Philip had first met her in 1934. During the Second World War, he served with distinction in the British Mediterranean and Pacific fleets.

@@stevefowler3398 there have been rumors circulating for years of infidelity in the marriage, with speculation on both sides. I don't think it was a fairy tale but I do believe that Philip understood his role clearly, to support Her Majesty the Queen, and to produce heirs. He did both with mixed results but I don't recall any negative press on him ever hugely embarrassing the queen. That's saying a lot considering how he was a full-time working royal for nearly 70 years. I do believe however, that he was a subpar parent, at best.

And back in those days falling for someone didn't mean you necessarily slept with them. She probably adored him at 13, but it was pure. She didn't sneak off behind her mother's back and get pregnant!

What a lovely looking child and man.He had such a sad childhood and I'm so glad he found such a wonderful woman who too was lovely inside and out to marry.
Yes he really did have an awful childhood. I'm just halfway through reading a biography of the Queen and there is a lovely letter he wrote to the Queen Mother when he got engaged to Elizabeth, thanking her for making him feel so welcome, adding that he had never experienced family life before and had loved feeling like he was part of theirs. It's both sad and touching that he was giddy with happiness at the thought of finally having a home and family of his own.

Passed around among his sisters, losing one of them and almost her entire family in a plane crash. Poor Philip’s childhood was a mess.

Queen Elizabeth II picked out a great guy. Despite a broken home, constantly changing homes and schools he was a man who never made excuses. He was brave, loyal, faithful and humble. He was an alpha male who put his ego to the side so that the Queen could shine.
My favorite Royal except Queen Elizabeth. His life is a ready film script. Prince and Queen were perfect match and their relationship was full of passion, love and disappointments. I will miss them both. 🌹

Lol! My Uncle has a Prince Phillip story, he is a stonemason and was part of the crew that did the restoration work on Windsor Castle after the fire. He said one day they were on break and this older gentleman comes up and starts talking, discussing sports, telling off color jokes, basically just one of the guys. My Uncle thinks it's just one of the other guys from another work crew, then later his foreman says, "Well what did you think of Prince Phillip?" My Uncle was like, "WTF?!? That was Prince Phillip!" And the foreman responds, "Yep, he stops by a lot, I think he prefers spending time with us than the royal family."

My favorite story about him and who he really is. He reminded Phillip during an argument that he should remember that he is talking to a future king. He expects everybody to call him sir even old friends.

It was cruel to send him away to Gordonstoun, the same spartan boarding school where even Phillip was traumatized. You do not get to select a child’s personality. They’re assigned at conception and they do not change.
