All the Stoics possessed a certain power, a certain freedom by way of their philosophy.
The Stoics, rich and poor alike, were equally independent and defiant. They were in command of themselves, they knew what was good and what wasn’t, they knew what was true and what wasn’t and no one-through force or temptation-could make them think otherwise.
A strong mind, a mind that knows how to learn, that knows how to get to the core of things? This mind is stronger than tyrants, than slave owners, than serpent-tongued manipulators. They might be able to throw you in jail or bombard you with disinformation but they can’t actually get to what matters within you.
Reading is your reinforcements. Philosophy is freedom. Stoicism is strength.

I had the weird thought today that a heavily avoidant attachment style almost inverts the lessons of stoicism.

How did you come to this thought?
I’m asking because it’s crazy for me to read this comment,bc it applies to my situation. My ex was heavily avoidant and i noticed it influencing my stoic lifestyle.

@@danielschaaf5714 I haven't followed the thought too far yet, but I was thinking about my own heavily avoidant attachment style and how it extends beyond relationships. I don't like getting attached to anything, but especially people. It looks very much like stoicism, and makes stoicism a natural fit for me, but I don't think it's the same thing. I think the lessons stoicism has for me are going to emphasise more my need to narrow down the scope of experiences I consider to be attachments and to live a life less protective of my psychological and emotional comfort.
Though I'm not sure. There's a lot to be said for having everything you want already, even if many would say it isn't much.

Does this work if you live under opression? Asking for a friend that is currently being bombarded, but in the literal sense of the word, not only bombarded with missinformation as you mention in the video.

if you’re talking about the people of Gaza, Then I’ll tell you this: Islam gives them resilience.
A lot of the concepts from stoicism applies directly to Islam. You’ll be fascinated if you look into it.
May Allah (S.W.T.) guide you and bestow upon you His Blessings; Ameen.
