"special needs" is a legal term applying in foster care, derived from the language in the Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997. It is a diagnosis used to classify children as needing more services than those children without special needs who are in the foster care system. It is a diagnosis based on behavior, childhood and family history. I'm sure a lot of people don't intend to be rude, just don't know where it came from.
She’s absolutely correct, I know the feeling. People don’t understand we just want to be treated with dignity & respect. If we walk funny it’s not because we drink, if we lose our balance it’s not because we stumble but because there’s a neurological reason we can’t control and if we know our limitation it’s not because we’re being difficult. I can climb stairs on a regular day but I can’t walk on ramps, I fall. Just like walkers, sometimes we can’t use them because they’re not tall enough, or our arms give out and we fall. Let us live with dignity don’t try and control or steal our independence and autonomy, our brains are not affected, we know!
You are amazing! Yes, we all have things we deal with! You are a beautiful young lady!!
I love your smile. Bless you in all you do.

This has always bugged me too! It has always sounded super condescending to me.
The term 'invalid' was used for 2000 years. Pronounced: 'in ve lid'
@@relguiatmont7336 the earliest use of that word is from the 1700s.
