    Fairly new subscriber, over from Criminolly. Discovering a lot of new music from your channel. Smote being the latest band I’m now obsessed with!😂

      Hi Anthony - thanks ever so much for subscribing. Criminolly's is a great channel for my other passion in life. I've tried to start a booktube (west coast book addict) channel too, but it's not great. Smote are excellent aren't they - so pleased my friend brought them to my attention. Think they've done a couple of other albums so they'll have to be purchased next! Cheers... Pete

      Hi Royston, Newcastle does have some really good resources for record shopping, it's just a shame I don't live a bit closer - a trip there with the bus and train journey's occupies a large part of the day. Having said that I really should try and get over a bit more often. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Pete, It sounds lovely to sit on a train to another city and go shopping for records with a friend. (Love trains). I got to the store late today as my son had a tournament in the morning. I did get the Gong and Froese albums as well. Could have used some Hawkwind. Glad you got some stuff you wanted. Don't think Gong or Froese are big sellers here either. I got a Froese album last time around as well, also re-recorded. Like you, a late realization, but will keep them. I also checked out the recent arrived used bins and wow. I went home with the 3 first Soft Machine albums, in some sort of OG form. Also Gong's Shamal. A used Deutsche Grammofon Stravinsky album and the Swedish Flaskkvartetten also came with. I am glad I did not go there early, or I probably would not have gone in the used bins due to the crowd. Hope you enjoy your new music! I need to check out the Finnish album. Take care, Richard

      Hi Richard, I too enjoy train journeys, but the trip back from Carlisle to Whitehaven was spoilt somewhat by the presence of some loud drunken young men! Well done on getting the Gong and Froese - need to check what the rerecording involved. The Hawkwind is a must - I love that period of the band. The first 3 Softs - wow, you struck lucky there. Ditto Shamal - different sound to early Gong but great jazz fusion. Which Stravinsky piece did you get? And Flaskkvartten - never heard of - need to check them out.
      All the best... Pete

      Too bad about disturbed travel. When I retire some day, I hope to get more train travel in. On the Stravinsky, I got Petrouchka - Scenes de Ballet. Recorded by Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonard Bernstein. It is a Deutsche Grammophon release, back when digital was cool... I am not familiar enough with Stravinsky to know the music by title, but for 10 bucks I figured Stravinsky was worth the chance. Fläskkvartetten, or they go by Fleshquartet in English, is not a band I have a tremendous overview over. They do have some interesting music though. They are a (at times electric) string quartet, but often with vocals and drums and their strings can be rocked up a good bit. I think they have changed a good bit over the years. I found a more avant garde album (Discogs will say)from 88. Lovers of Swedish crime stories may be familiar with their score to the series "Wallander". I am not sure if the British take (with Kenneth Brannagh) use their music. I saw them with my dad at Rockefeller in Oslo in the 90s. It was a surprisingly short concert, but good music. Back then I remembered I enjoyed a heavier take on "I am the Walrus" from the White Album. I would definitely recommend streaming before buying. I was really surprised to see an album here in town, so had to take the chance. Have a great week! Have to go on the road for work, and no record player until Friday probably.

      @@vinylizingprogger Not a big classical guy, but I do like some modern classical music. I remember at school one of the teachers playing us the Rite of Spring with a sound to light converter - it was quite something! I'll check out Fläskkvartetten to see what I think - not that I need another band to collect especially if they have an extensive back catalogue. I've seen both the original and British series of Wallender, but afraid I don't remember the music.

    I was also in Newcastle this afternoon (work reasons) and had no idea about Record Store Day. Shows how much I have my finger on the pulse 😂 The Gong triple and Hawkwind releases look excellent. I see now on the list there’s a Nuggets 5 LP set as part of RSD. Hope you had a great day. Shocking weather!

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939
      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939  Рік тому +1

      RSD is just an excuse to visit Newcastle, see my friend, and go record shopping. The Gong and Hawkwind were really the only must buys. I never saw the Nuggets set (though wasn't looking for it) - but I hate to think how much that would have cost! The weather did try to put a damper on things, but it couldn't spoil the day.
      Cheers... Pete

    EAR looks fantastic Pete. I didn't know so many great records were out this year. I managed to get the Slits online. I couldn't get up to Edinburgh, my nearest shops. Seems I missed out on a great Nuggets box too!

      Hi Mike, played the EAR album the other night - it's really good - would recommend it if you like electronic music. I didn't know about the Nuggets set until I was told later - mind you It was probably in 3 figures! I have a reissue of the original double vinyl, and the CD boxset so I'm probably fine. Cheers... Thank you for sharing the whole adventure to RSD Pete. One of my longtime dreams is to do some digging across the pond. I have always been fascinated with many parts of England. From Plymouth to Southampton to Brighton to London to Birmingham to Liverpool to Manchester to Leeds and on up to Newcastle upon Tyne. Or vice versa. We have a Plymouth here. It is in Cape Cod. We also have a Brighton and Exeter in Massachusetts. Anyways. So Newcastle upon Tyne is considered the east coast? I thought that it was in the North of England. Sounds like it may be North East. I live about three minutes from the beach. So I am directly on the coast. My home base at work is located at the tail end of the beach. >< Glad that you had so many releases that you were fond of. I did not think that this RSD here in America was that good this year. I have noticed that they are releasing the same artists/bands every single year. Any artist that they know will sell gets pressed for RSD. I have a list of about 150 that I would love to see released. They are all tough to find records. >< I will certainly check out EAR. Love the look of the cover art. Thanks Pete. Enjoyed it thoroughly~

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939
      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939  Рік тому +1

      Wow Rob, you're ambition seems to be to cover the whole country! I really should be more accurate in my usage of geographical terms - west coast in my terms refers to the west coast of Cumbria which is the north-west of England - I live about 3 miles from the actual coast. Newcastle is as you rightly surmised in the north-east of England in Northumberland - pretty much directly east from me - it's around 8 or 9 miles from the actual east coast. There is actually a popular walking route called the Coast to Coast Walk, which goes from my part over to the north east coast - it's around 190 miles long.
      There does seem to be a repetition of the same artists every RSD, and too many albums rereleased which were common enough in the past - much prefer when we get previously unreleased (on vinyl) live shows.
      All the very best... Pete

    Some nice picks Pete. The packaging on the Gong looks great. EAR sound interesting I wasn't aware of them or that release. I'll look into Smote as they seem to tick a lot of boxes based on your description. Cheers Dale

      Thanks Dale - the Gong certainly is a nice package (though it should be for the price)! Played the EAR last night. Been a long time since I played the CDs but it was probably even better than I remembered them being - do check them out. The Smote is also well worth investigating.
      Hope you enjoyed your purchases - all I know of Althea and Donna is the classic single, but if the rest of the album is as good then it'll be a cracker.
      All the best... Pete

    Nice picks Pete!
    It's a real bugbear of mine when you're paying such a premium that record companies can't use polylined inners!!
    I would have liked the Edgar Froese..but had no idea that it was a re recording.
    Nice Hawkwind live, at a great period of their career.
    Smote sound interesting, will need to check them out.

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939
      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939  Рік тому +1

      Don't get me started on the lack of polylined sleeves for new releases Rob! It's not as if it isn't a recognised problem, and it would add very little to the cost (especially when they are asking so much in the first place.
      Froese went and rerecorded I think all of his early 70s albums. I've steered clear of those and bought the originals - they are generally pretty easy to come across and are not expensive. But I forgot all about that when making the purchase. I have listened to it and it sounds very good, but don't know to what extent it was changed in the re-recording.
      Hawkwind was very pleased to get - it's always a bit special when a live album is from a gig or tour you attended.
      The Smote I really enjoyed. I even heard a bit of a Popol Vuh influence particularly on the early part of the first side when they were at their quietest.
      Cheers... Pete

    Hi Pete, great picks on rsd. I wish i had also friends locally that were interested in collecting music. That Elonkorjuu album is surprisingly produced by one of the most prolific Finnish lyricist, she has made almost 3000 lyrics, mostly schlagers though:) Also i started to wonder why Burchards daughter is Marja, that is very common Finnish female name, meaning berry in english. Didnt know that she kept the band active till present. Cheers.

      Hi Petri, My friend Mark is not exactly local - it's over a 3 hour train journey to get to Newcastle from here. I miss my days in Manchester when I had a number of friends all of us into music and we would meet up every weekend. That's one of the main reason's I joined the VC. I wonder if Marja's mother was Finnish? Or did her parents just like the name? She took over the reins of the band when Christian passed away. The only time I saw the band live was pre-pandemic in London when she was at the helm - they were excellent.

      Sorry to hear you can't get the Hawkwind Richard. £85 for a single album that cost £28 initially - that's ridiculous and despicable. I think the recordings are taken from the latest CD box set Days of the Underground, but that'd set you back over £90.

    I missed RSD this year. In my mind Newcastle is all the way the other end of the country but of course for you it's just across the way isn't it. I don't know any of those artists or records that you showed after the Hawkwind record. They all look expensive though. Was it an expensive trip to Newcastle? I hope you've had an enjoyable Sunday listening to you new records Pete. I'm sitting here listening to BOC Secret Treaties that arrived in the post yesterday. It's quite good isn't it. Cheers

    • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939
      @soundsfromthewestcoast9939  Рік тому +1

      About 3 hours + on the train across John (and that doesn't include the travel to Whitehaven at either end). Luckily I have a senior railcard so the trip was only about £22. Overall the trip was expensive though as RSD vinyl prices are ridiculous. Don't mind too much though as I treat it like a mini day's holiday - next time though it'll be for a record fair which should hopefully result in cheaper vinyl to buy (though the volume may make up for that!). BOC's Secret Treaties is a great album - my favourite studio album by them. All the best... Pete

      @@soundsfromthewestcoast9939 I'm surprised it takes as long as that. Maybe it depends on which train you take. I'm toying with the idea of making a trip from my place in Wales over to Norfolk next month to see a concert. I'd quite like to go but I'd be looking at a four or five hour car drive just to get there... It's a lot of effort to see a band play and I'm now at the age where I have to ask myself 'do I like them enough to go all that way?' Yes I finally sought out a copy of that BOC album when you showed an album by them recently. I'd been seeing references to the band over the past weeks so I thought I was obviously missing out on something.
