This is parenting #101. No talking back to one's parents (Yakety Yak 'Don't Talk Back). Or the kids will not listen to rock and roll music, no allowance, no going out on a Friday night. If they don't do their fair share around the house. And oh, one more thing... "Don't forget to bring in the Dog and put out the Cat." Just love this. Great reaction as always.
when I used to take my grandkids back and forth to school they always requested this song then always sang along to it,they were all in elementary school at the time
This was how parents talked to kids back then. No negotiations...just do it. Disobey your mother and your father would deal with you. Song fro 1957 or 58. I was 9 or 10 so I didnt have to worry about going out on Friday night.
The TRUTH! They laid down the rules and they had the RIGHT to. Behave- or else. Do your chores- or else. What year was it that the government decided kids could sue their parents? I'm thinking 30 years ago...my nephews had the guidance counselor tell my sister that she HAD TO buy them name-brand tennis shoes because the other kids in school had them. Hmmmmmmmm.
I remember when I was in the Navy (big mistake) and was in Norfolk, VA to pick up my ship (ship is a big misnomer, it was an escapee from a razor blade factory). I went to a Rock-and-Roll show headlining Jerry Lee Lewis. On the show were the Coasters as well as other performers. Great show. The Coasters were known for a lot of fun music. I'll always remember "Little Egypt" because my mother's name was Eva and all those who worked around her called her Little Eva not just because of the song but she stood about 4'10". But as you can see (or hear) by "Yakety Yak" it's basically a guidebook for parents.
Back in the day we had "sock hops". These were dances where you took off your shoes so you wouldn't scuff the gym floor!!! And kids---for the most part, listened to their parents...
Your reactions are great. I grew up in the 50's and 60's listening to all this music. Mel, you've said that you like fun songs and you like country music. If you put those two things together, you get the one and only ROGER MILLER. "King of the Road", "Dang Me", "Chug-A-Lug", "Do-Wacka-Do", and many more.
Known for their novelty songs they were a hoot. Another one to sample is “Along came Jones” which is a take off on the old cliff hanger serial movies in the thirties. Fun group during a fun period in early rock and roll period.
That was a fun reaction. Listened to this many times growing up. A song that really makes you hyper. Just play this around little kids and watch them spin out 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The Coasters have lots of hits, some of their slower songs are "Just Like a Fool". "Down Home Girl", or One Kiss Led to Another". I grew up in the 80's and 90's but I found a Little Anthony and the Imperials tape in my dad's car one day and I've been stuck on the oldies ever since. Those days had real singers and the best music, in my opinion.
Songs I grew up on...your reactions are priceless. Would give you 5 thumbs up if I could. One of the highlights of my day is watching you two (and hearing some tunes from the past). What fun!
I mostly grew up in the sixties and The Rock and Soul music of that time but I am proud to say that when I grew up in a great time with a mix of the 50s and 60s and beyond. So it is heartwarming and other great adjectives to see you really enjoy the fifties Do Wap right now and the other genres of the 60s 70s and even the 80s.
"Searchin' " by The Coasters is a bit slower. Most of their hits were in the late '50's. "Poison Ivy" is probably their biggest hit or, at least, their most enduring one.
Written by the kids about their parents. This type of parenting was universal in the 60’s . My parents were always saying , “clean up your room, put out the cat, your hoodlum friends, don’t talk back, bring in the dog, wait till your Father gets home, etc.
The great Boots Randolph on sax. Yes this was a big hit. "Poison Ivy", "Little Egypt" and "Searchin' " next please. This one was released in 1958. I had the great pleasure in seeing these guys in the early 60's here in NYC. The days y'all.
No, this was King Curtis on sax. King Curtis was the Atlantic/Atco session sax-man for most of their classics, along with Plas Johnson. Boots Randolph was session man for Decca, MGM and many other labels but never recorded with Atlantic as King Curtis was the top man there.

The Coasters were great fun. That's what music was like in the '50s and early '60s ("Yakety Yak" was 1958.) You got a kick out of this one, so you're bound to like "Poison Ivy" and "Charlie Brown" from '59. Also from '59 was "Love Potion #9" by The Clovers!
love you guys. good people. great reactions. I've loved this song since i was a child in the 70s. 50s black artists are my favs, esp. Fats Domino. Give Fats some love: Be My Guest, What a Party, Blueberry Hill, I'm Walkin etc

I remember when this song was on Tiny Toons. When Plucky Duck's mama was making him do everything 😂 My mom used to play this when my room was dirty (or so she thought...) 😅
This was my dad's parenting style..I first heard this song on Tiny Toons where they did a MTV style music countdown episode with this, Do the Twist, Istanbul, Particle Man, and others.
We were the original latch key kids. Both parents had to work. Mom cleaned white peoples homes and Dad, if you had a Dad at home, did whatever he could to earn money. We had choirs, no allowance. Only the allowance of being able to live. Peace and Love.
I sang this to my Grandkids last week they told me I should record it LOL told them It had been done already in the time of their Great Grandparents in the 50s
If you want to lose your mind, listen to the Coasters doing I'm A Hog for You, Baby...written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, who also wrote Yakety Yak, as well as Hound Dog and many others by Elvis.

"Get A Job" by the Silohuettes is along the same vein as this-with a little bit more DoWap. You'll laugh as parents!
I cannot count the number of times my dad would sing “Get a Job” to me when I asked for something.
@@tfodthogtmfof7644 I can relate~
My dad would play the Sha-Na-Na version of that for me, because he got such a kick out of them singing "Get a Job" to all them hippies at Woodstock

I often to this together with Parents Just Don't Understand from the 1980s. They seem to complement each & show how things never change. 😀

It's so great and refreshing that late fifties music is still so listenable and popular 60 years later!
Little Egypt. Give it a listen. Love you guys. Enjoy the music with y'all.
