Gents- European Vacation is really good also! Love for you to react to it! This is easily one of my most rewatchable and quotable movies, and thanks for reacting to it!
My aunt and uncle drove me and my cousin from Connecticut to Florida in a yellow station wagon in 1979. The car had no air conditioning and my aunt and uncle fought the whole way. We ended up hitting Walt Disney World for a day. The rest of the trip was to visit other relatives in an over 50 community. It was brutal for two 16 year old girls. But now I look back to that trip with fond memories.
I made that same trip to Florida but in the 90s and it sounds like it was more or less the same experience. It was brutal, boring and frustrating for a teenager. But now it’s remembered fondly and I’m happy that it happened.
I also went when I was 16 as a combined Christmas and birthday present. My older sister lived there and had annual passes, my dad covered the plane tickets.
The best part of these movies is that the kids are always different. Clark always mentions how they grow up so fast, he hardly recognizes them. Also, it's hard to imagine that this film came out more than 40 years ago in 1983 and it's still as funny as ever.
A piece of trivia about the movie ... The original ending had Clark kidnapping Roy Wally from his home and holding him hostage (something they used in a later Vacation movie) ... but that ending didn't do well with test audiences ... So, they refilmed the ending where they broke into Wally World ... between the filming of the original ending and the remake, there was a several month break ... During that break, Anthony Michael Hall (Rusty) had a growth spurt ... During the entire movie, he/s shorter than Beverly DeAngelo (Ellen, his mom) ... but in the remade ending we see in the movie, he's much taller than her.
Love Vegas Vacation; it's got one of my favorite lines ever: "I ain't seen a beatin' like that since someone stuck a banana in my pants and turned a monkey loose." Gotta love Cousin Eddie.
Probably my favorite road-trip movie. I'll usually watch this before going on a long road trip anywhere. I still remember back in 2003 when I took my first vacation road trip as an adult. I'd made reservations with a B&B over in Pennsylvania (was living on the west side of Columbus at the time. The drive was going good until I got to Pittsburgh. I drove through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and saw signs that my exit was closed. The only options that I saw were to go west after the bridge, which was towards the direction I'd come from or go straight into downtown Pittsburgh. After circling around and passing the same buildings a third time, I got back on the highway that I'd come into downtown on and went back through the tunnel in the opposite direction. I saw a Days Inn and figured they would be able to tell me how to get back on my route. The woman at the front desk was checking in a guy, and while he was filling out the papers, she asked if she could help me. I literally told her, "This is probably going to sound strange coming from a guy, but I'm lost." The three of us had a laugh, she gave me directions, and after a detour through a neighborhood with some very hilly streets that my car could barely make up the hills, I got on the road that I had intended to go on. But the problems got worse. They were widening the road, which meant that traffic was narrowed down to one lane in both directions and squeezed over onto one lane and the shoulder. I was literally sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic and watching as the temperature gage on the car was slowly going up. Knowing I had to cool the engine down, I did what we were taught in driver's ed and lowered all the windows and cranked up the heat to suck the heat out of the engine. Problem was, it was the middle of August. So there I am sitting in traffic, tired, hungry from not having been able to stop and eat lunch, and now melting from the heat. I started shouting Clark's speech about how this was no longer a vacation but a quest for fun. Finally, traffic let up, I stopped to eat lunch, and then I got to the B&B just before a heavy thunderstorm rolled through town, setting off the tornado sirens, which meant sheltering in the basement for about a half hour after I got there. Thankfully, the rest of the trip went smoothly.
I saw this movie in 83 and it scarred me for life. To this day, whenever we go on vacation, from the time we leave the driveway to the time we walk back into the house, I'm just waiting for everything to go to shit.😂
European Vacation is absolutely worth the watch; it almost never gets covered, but it's a special riot in its own right with so many great moments. It's definitely 3rd place in the Vacation saga -- you just can't beat the original or Christmas Vacation -- but it 100% stands very nearly as tall as the others IMHO.
My dad had a stationwagon like the one in this movie, except he put a corvette engine in it. It was so much fun being at a red light in the hoop-dee-mobile and smoking the Mustang in the next lane. 😂
Wally world is actually Six Flags Magic Mountain. I grew up in the LA area, and when this came out we immediately recognized the rides. The Colossus was a brand new roller coaster at the time of filming, and its still in use today.
Chevy Chase hated the roller coaster. That's why they put him behind John Candy to hide his face. If you watch closely you'll catch Chevy's expression and you can tell he isn't enjoying it.😂
Alright, _Vacation_ time! I’m gonna have fun, and you’re gonna have fun! You got John Hughes with the story, Harold Ramis directing, and a great cast for the comedy. You know you’re in for quite a ride in a hideous metallic pea disaster machine.
4:34ish - that scene, if you look closely, she’s scraping the dishes ‘clean’ and putting dishes in the dishwasher, he’s pulling them out, ‘drying’ them off, and putting them in the cabinet. Story - 6:42 - 10yrs ago, family dinner with music in the background. I’m like ‘I know this song but can’t place it’, with affirmations across the table. My brother says under his breath ‘Sparky turn off the television and come to bed’. The entire table lost it, we laughed so hard.
This is a fantastic movie! My grandparents and my mum grew up watching the National Lampoon’s vacation movies. And have showed us these movies growing up. and we always quote lines from the movies. It’s hilarious, please watch the other ones as well, there just as good! 💕🤣
You just have to remember the LA one. DisneyWorld isn't in Orlando, but it is in Florida. BTW, the guys were calling the dog "Dinky". All this time, I thought it was "Stinky." Which is it? Am I having a Mandela moment?
My parents took us (my little brother and me) on several road trips growing up, and there's a lot of truth in this movie. 😄One of the trips we went on was to Disney World in Florida, and when my dad saw this movie I thought he was going to die laughing, especially when Clark fell asleep at the wheel. I'm sure this movie was much more real to him than it was to us because we were pretty young at the time.
This might very well be the first comedy of its kind. I can't think of anything before this where a family man is a dorky idiot on the verge of insanity, but just a few years later we get Homer Simpson, Al Bundy, Peter Griffin, Randy Marsh, on and on.
Omg this is old school comedy! Chevy Chase is brilliant! Check out his movie Modern Problems and if you haven’t yet, his movie Fletch. Also, unless I missed it you haven’t watched Meet the Fockers ( Meet the Parents sequel), even funnier than the first movie!
First of all, great reaction guys. I was never a huge fan of this movie, but I love most of his other movies. Two I highly recommend anyone to watch, Spies Like Us, and the Fletch movies. So much fun! Take care.
The woman in the red car played the same character in a recent show called The Goldbergs which is based in the 80s and that woman aged like a very fine wine and i mean FINE . I am so jealous of her she looks incredible.
The car salesman at start is Eugene Levy, who was a co-cast member of John Candy on 2nd City Tv for several years.... Canada's version of SNL. They and others played multiple reoccurring characters. Long Live 'Bobby Bittman'

Growing up in the 90s my family would travel cross-country a ton with all 3 kids and our friends sometimes . We would get into random predicaments like in this movie all the time, and we would always laugh about it later on. Like the time I got lost in the casino and started gambling, I was 9 or the time I took everyone's shoes from our family and our family friends and locked them in the hotel safes and changed the code then proceeded to forget the code 😊.
Eternal thanks to my mother for letting me buy this on VHS as a 13 year old. It's a really really funny movie and I also still to this day like it for uhh, two other Beverly D'Angelo-related reasons. 😁
1. FACT: They don't crush cars right away. They will resell them and then sell the parts. (I see what you did there.)😏 2. My favorite part is when the ALL fall asleep in the car while it's still rolling. 🤣 3. I've been to the "Long Branch" saloon. 4. "Bop your baloney"="Spank your monkey"🤣🤣 5. The guy at the campground is Brian Doyle-Murry (Bill Murry's Brother) and he played Clark's boss in "Christmas Vacation". 6. He's crazy. I'd take Beverly DeAngelo 😍😋over Christy Brinkley any day. 7. Who didn't love John Candy? 8. Mr. Walley/Eddie Bracken played the toy store owner in "Home Alone II".
Anthony Michael Hall plays Rusty in this. He was the nerd in The Breakfast Club, and the bully in Edward Scissorhands, and has been in a bunch of other movies and shows too. He was an 80s geek icon. Oh, and I have it on good authority that Chevy Chase is, indeed, a serious a-hole. And a lot of that comes from people who've worked directly with him, especially people on SNL.💛
A couple things took me years to notice. The car constantly squeeking. Once you notice it you can never ignore it! And when Ellen is scraping food off their plates in the kitchen, Clark wipes them off and puts the plates right into the cabinet. Such a subtle gag, but hilarious.
Still one of my guilty pleasure favorite movies. The dialog in this entire movie is absolute gold. And the road trip aspect makes to really good filming locations. Chevy Chase is a comedy god. Marty Moose Marty Moose Marty Moose.
😂I am never not in the mood for this movie. The food and drink preparation at cousin Eddie's place created my distrust for all potluck type food meals. Caddy Shack and Fletch are must see Chevy movies.
I drive trucks for a living, come across ridiculous crazy drivers on the roads every day….but it will NEVER EVER EVER EVER compare to the dangerous life threatening movie watching job you both have! I would and could never do what you guys do! I’ll leave that to you professionals 👍👍👍👍😬😬
The script for "National Lampoon's Vacation" originated from a short story titled "Vacation '58" published in the National Lampoon magazine, written by John Hughes, which detailed a disastrous family road trip, laying the foundation for the movie's plot and comedic elements; essentially, the film is based on a fictional story about a family's chaotic vacation journey as depicted in the magazine. Key points about the origin: Author: John Hughes Publication: National Lampoon magazine Story Title: "Vacation '58" From Google A.I...
I actually read the original story once. The original it was Disney World, and Clark actually shot Walt Disney himself and went to jail. Different ending, of course.
King's Mountain, Cincinnati, OH was our road trip to Amusement Park. At the time, the fastest roller coaster in the world at 75 mph (120 kph). Great time at 8 years old.

'Yellowbeard' with the Monty Python guys, Cheech and chong, Madeline Kahn and many others, hilarious movie.
Christie Brinkley was the driver in the Red Ferrari. She's 70 now but still looking amazing as she did back then.
That's awesome, I was just listening to the song Christie Lee, that Billy Joel wrote about her.
