Shelves are empty because Americans are sick of exchanging their labor for poverty wages.
Hospitals are understaffed because they're owned by hedge funds that have laid off employees in order to lower their overhead. Hospitals were understaffed long before the pandemic. Firing some administrators who refused to get a vaccine, which is mandatory at almost every hospital, isn't why hospitals can't keep up.

Edit: the claim that we were leading oil producers is nonsense, we haven't produced more oil than Saudi Arabia in, well, ever. That's why majority of our oil is imported from them. This claim is based on the notion of "energy independence", which is double speak from right wing pundits. We were never energy independent, there was one year (during a global pandemic) when we produced slightly more natural gas than we used as a nation. They don't mention how that hasn't happened in decades or how much of our crude and gas still came through imports.
