Heating the screen can often damage and discolour it if you are not skilled / experienced. MUCH easier to buy the little tool that looks like a mini plastic pizza cutter. No heating required and I have done HUNDREDS of imac screens without incident using the same tool that cost about $5 and comes with most of the adhesive kits that you need to re-attach the screen and (yes I know) you can buy some quality 3m thin tape and do it yourself (which I now do as it is far cheaper than the adhesive sticker kit). I think this method is MUCH safer considering a replacement screen is about $800 AUD. I've been working in IT for 35 years.

      Very helpful thank you.
I have several Questions need your professional advice and these are the things that happened in the process. I am already $$450 into this repair and now just want to do the next best thing so I can get my computer working again:advice:
      1) put in brand new iMac screen for my IMac 2020 and hooked up all cables turned it on and nothing came on after I had already sealed it up.
I had to buy new cable since when the original screen came out it ruined one of the pins on the cable.
I bought new cable and then plugged into new screen and nothing worked unfortunately I sealed up the screen before checking to see if the screen and new cable worked. It does not work. The old screen was working but is was so cracked that it was not ledge able.
Would you recommend hooking up side monitor and using that?
1)With HDMI 3 cable to hdmi and plugging in external monitor?
2)is it possible that the connector on the motherboard was damaged when screen fell out onto desk?
3)screen that was sent to me was defective?
4)Apple 2019 IMac cable does not work with 2020 iMac even though it looks exactly the same?
      Let me know your thoughts.
I am ready to take computer into you break we fix store to have them get it right.
      What are your suggestions?

Just a couple fo tips for anyone else looking to do this - I would 100% recommend getting the kit that fixit sell to do this.. makes the job 100 times easier. In the kit you get a service wedge (which keeps the screen in an upright/fixed position) to make it easier to work on - you also get a 'pizza' cutter to hellcat through the adhesive - this is preferably as it will not cut too deep and do any damage if it slips - there is also no need for any heat when you do this.. just run the pizza cutter round - life the screen forward - disconnect both cables and then remove the bottom adhesive..

What about finding a screen? I can't seem to find a glass screen alone for a 21.5 inch iMac (late 2015). Does Apple or someone even sell screens?

Definitely I'd vouch that the pizza cutter makes things a LOT easier. I had one that the screen was already cracked. I used a box cutter and I put just a little bit of pressure and cracked the screen even more. So a word of advice to be patient and use the right tool!

    Thanks, good video!
I used to be an ACMT and I miss the good old days. The older iMacs had a replaceable glass panel that required no tools and took about 3 minutes if you didn't have to clean a bunch of glass shards out of the inside. Just two metal tabs at the bottom and magnets holding it on.If you needed to do upgrades like a hard drive you just lifted the glass off with suction cups and removed the LCD with a torx driver. Apple continues to make it more and more difficult and expensive for DIY.
My wife's 2019 21.5" Retina 4k just fell off the table when the stand collapsed. There are spider web cracks across the glass but fortunately the display still works. I guess we'll just have to live with it.

Truely Apple sucks, I just took off cracked screen on iMac 2020, 27 inch screen and it is a sticky mess any idea how to get the darn glue left on the lcd screen after removing the glass. This process took me 3 hours to remove all of the glass off of this extremely sticky surface?
Apple sucks they should have stuck with the magnets and suction cups to remove the screen.
Grade of D+ to Apple for screwing people who need to replace the glass over the lcd part of screen.
Any suggestions on what to use to remove the glue from the LCD I would be so grateful as I have replacement glass ready to go.
      Thanks,
      David

You don't need a heat gun to get the glass off. Use a utility knife between glass and frame, it came off easily for me. I'm not worried about the old adhesive because I preordered the display adhesive kit from Apple to apply to the new display.

This screen is indeed very difficult to remove. Especially, if you have to reuse it as in case of replacing the hard drive. Chances of damaging the screen is very high. I do not agree that he should use a metal spatula to penetrate the glue-filled space between the frame and the screen. Best thing to do is use a plastic razor-thin roller with a handle. If you apply a lot of heat, sure it will loosen the glue. But it will expand the glass, which in turn can expand the frame of the display and cause it to bleed permanently. There is no fix for that. If you are a technician and you are asked to replace this screen, plan for a 3-4 hour job depending on your level of proficiency. One more thing, have good gloves to protect your hands and a good workbench with plenty of space. The edges of the iMac is very sharp.

Lapfix, gret video. One question, after putting the screen back I noticed a very prominent backlight bleeding in 2 or 3 places around the edges, alogside a purple tint all around the screen (specially in the corners). I treated the screen with much care. Not sure what could have caused it. Is it permanent damage? Can it be repaired by ungluing and resealing the screen again? what do you think?
    Thanks!

    • @lapfix
      @lapfix  3 роки тому

Hard to say without looking at it, but usually the yellow around the edges can be a "burn" from applying too much heat. It is easy to cook those corners as the adhesive is harder to loosen there.
