When I was in Greece last summer, there were all Serbs on the beach. Like the only language i heard is Serbian, there were also Serbs workers in stores and petrol stations and Greeks that knew Serbian. For the most time i totally forget that i was in Greece, such a lovely expirience. 🇷🇸🇬🇷

Thank you brother! I'm Serbian and I went to Greece for a holiday back in 2013 and spent 3 days in Athens and then 5 days on the island of Paros! It was simply incredible and Greek people were so friendly and warm and culture was simply breathtaking 😍 i met some friendly locals and when I told them I was Serbian they immediately started treating me like a king in their own country. I love Greece from Serbia 🇬🇷🇷🇸

Serbian culture, the way Serbs live, our values in life, food, music... It's all closer to Greece than it's to Russia.

During the Early Middle Ages, Principality of Serbia was a subject of the Byzantine Empire. Serbia was like Romania and Bulgaria part of the wider Byzantine/Roman commonwealth. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the Serbs began fighting for independence, revolting against the Byzantines. In the following centuries, Serbia's independence was recognized by the Byzantines, and the two were mostly in friendly relations. The Serbs aided the Byzantines at the Battle of Sirmium (1167) and Battle of Gallipoli (1312). Most of the Serbian queen consorts were Byzantine women (such as Eudokia Angelina, Simonida, Maria Palaiologina, Irene Kantakouzene, Helena Palaiologina). Manuel I of Constantinople recognized Sava as the first Archbishop of the Serbs. Hilandar on Mount Athos became one of the most important cultural and religious centres of the Serbian people. Some Byzantine families found refuge in Serbia at the end of the 14th and early 15th century, following Ottoman conquests, such as the Angeloi and Kantakouzenos. The two last Byzantine/Roman Emperors were of Serbian maternal descent. There are many other important people who connect Serbia and Greece. Serbs and Greeks helped each other in the wars for independence from the Ottoman Empire, where there were Serbian volunteers in Greece and Greek volunteers in Serbia. The first historian of the Serbian Revolution was a Greek, Triantafillos Doukas.
Dimitrios Karatasos sought to establish a Greek-Serbian alliance in 1861, traveling to Belgrade, but died during his trip. Lambros Koutsonikas, a Greek veteran and historian, dreamt of a Greek-Serbian federation of "two sisters" (1863). The Treaty of Vöslau, signed between Greece and Serbia on 26 August 1867, bound the two countries in an alliance. The Serbian people still remember Venizelos' response to Vienna's suggestion for Greece to attack and invade Serbia: "Greece is too small a country to do such big malice". The Greeks in the 1990s were strongly against NATO's illegal campaign and helped the Serbs a lot. There were a lot of Greek, Russian and Ukrainian (they were still considered Russians at the time) volunteers in Bosnia and Kosovo in 1990s. Mikis Theodorakis, famous Greek composer was great friend of Serbia. In addition to Greece, close friends of Serbia are Russia and Romania as well. I understand the joke about Mount Athos, but it has nothing to do with hatred towards women, on the contrary. Holy Mountain is one of the largest centers of the Orthodox world. Today, it is the seat of 20 Orthodox monasteries and many other smaller monastic communities and cells inhabited by monks who do not want any contact with the modern world and dedicate their lives to prayer. Athos is an autonomous state under Greek sovereignty. Only monks are allowed to live on the Holy Mountain, while those who visit it must have a special permit for it. There is a legend about why Mount Athos is forbidden for women. According to her, the Mother of God once sailed there with the Holy Apostle John to Cyprus when a great storm arose. This forced them to land right on Athos, near today's port of the Iviron monastery. The Mother of God went ashore and, delighted with the beauty, she blessed and asked Jesus to give the peninsula to her. Then a voice was heard: "May this place be your heritage and your garden, paradise and heaven of salvation for those who seek salvation." From that moment, the Holy Mountain was dedicated to the Mother of God, and that is why access to other women is not allowed there. But there were exceptions when women came to the Holy Mountain as the Serbian Empress Jelena/Helena, Princess Mara and some Greek and other women when they desperately needed protection due to illness or war.
