I like that you took the time to acknowledge the fella that gave you the idea for the video & that you’re sending him a little care package. That’s real decent of you. Cheers. …and now i know what I’m having for dinner tomorrow.
My grandfather taught me to use sand, he travelled a lot and said he used to use nothing but hot sand to scrub and clean out pot and pans and plates. He even said he would cook sand in a cast iron dutch oven to clean out the other pots he had then use the rest to scrub out the dutch oven. He showed me how to do it in the backyard with the sandbox when I was little. I was excited, my mom was NOT pleased.
Now, that is a man enjoying his camp cooking and it looks great Dave. Really good stuff on responding to the clean up question, I've often wondered about good solutions.
I look up to Dave, grew up watching him. Miss the days I would be home sick from school to rewatch episodes of him on discovery channel. Now I’m 24 at work watching him on UA-cam!
I remember in Boy Scouts having a pot of boiling water to dip the utensils, plate, etc into to prevent illness from bacteria as the last step in cleanup.
Came across an old video with Dave in Dual Survival where his snare trap got a pig then he crafted a 2-person raft out of bamboo. JUST ALL AROUND BADASS EPISODE.
The one piece of outdoor gear i've had for over 20 years and goes in my ruck every trip. A simple beer towel, had the same one for 2 decades and it's still going strong. I use it for cleaning and loads of over stuff 👍
The Chili Mac is a great 3-item recipe. It was helpful to remember that high-quality canned pure meat products are readily found in the marketplace these days.
I’ve made chili Mac with a cup of macaroni boiled , drained ,, then dump a can of your favorite canned chili in and heat till hot ,, I like the normal angus chili with beans best ,, add a splash of hot sauce and done ,,
When i dont have any thing to clean my cooking atuff i use boiling water and ash. Then i use moss as a scrubber and to get the rest of the ash off. This was a good video most people dont cover this in their videos.
Yes, always had several several bottles of alcohol in the rig... f/ dishes, utensils, washer fluid additive, air line antifreeze, sanitary jugs , etc... very versatile 👌 THANKS , Alan 🇨🇱
That's the way to attack that pan of chillimac Dave , just scarf it down ! It looked awesome man , can't wait to try it. Great job on the clean up too.
That's awesome Dave I haven't made chili mac for a long time and I just made it a week ago for the kids so they could try they loved it one of my favorites from when I was a kid, also you should try useing the Velveeta Shells and cheese one time it's really good with that creamy cheese like that
I like to carry a lightweight empty water bottle with a couple different holei caps to spray things down with. Deglaze my pans and give them a quick squirt.
You can't go wrong with chili mac. That looked dang good. I have never seen or heard of canned ground beef. I will have to start looking. Thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge.
Thank you for the meal idea! I was wondering what to cook for tomorrow night's dinner, lol! (Also, quick note for everyone, lye from ashes is alkaline, not acidic. It's easy to get that confused since both acids and bases / alkalines will burn your skin if they're strong enough, and lye can get pretty strong! I remember it because in chemistry class, we discussed how alkaline substances react with lipids in fats to create saponin. We tried making soap using acids and fats, but that didn't work; it had to be alkaline and within a specific category, chemically. (It's been decades, so don't ask me the details, lol.) It turns out that when you use ashes and hot water inside a greasy pan, a tiny amount of raw soap will form from the water leaching lye out of the ashes, and then mixing with the fats! This is how lye helps get your dishes that much cleaner, though it's nowhere as effective as actual soap.)
Today 2/8/24 @ 12:36pm, I fixed this Dave and the only thing I did different was used the deluxe Mac and cheese instead of the powder cheese. #Homerunsir Definitely will be fixing this in the colder months ahead. I think you live in or near the Carolinas. I’m outdoors, just not in the woods but in the park using the park grill with wood in picked up around the area.
Can you imagine if Dave had gotten some Velveeta or Kraft real cheese? When I make this over 🔥, that’s definitely what I’ll do. That Mexican cheese would be the 💣 as well.
You have a great channel that I enjoy. Down here in the south Louisiana when we camping we don't eat those kinds of food usually it's squirrels. Deer meat wood ducks rabbit an pot of rice Not all together but individually. Maybe Mac n cheese on the side. Or purple hull peas you know what I mean Like I said I reallky enjoy the vidios. You did say a hunting camp rite. Would love to have a friend like you to joint us
The easiest and quickest way to clean stainless steel pots/pans is with those stainless steel scrubber sponges. A little water and those cut right thru burnt on crud. Then rinse clean or wipe dry.
Just a quick question is this a meal that a student would be aloowed to make after class. Say for the basic, advanced, or intermediate classes. Great video. 😊
I'm sorry to hear, but I'm also glad you get to enjoy something new! You can do chilli Mac with so many different options. My favorite is to add Frito/corn chips to the chilli Mac with lots of jalapenos.
I was just thinking a couple days ago that I miss the cooking series you were doing in the camp kitchen. That was so informative. You gave me so many ideas and things I never thought of. I hope you do it again. Btw, how's the kitty?
If weight is not an issue, Velveeta mac and cheese is a great option. The Velveeta cheese does not need anything to rehydrate, but it is heavy compared to dehydrated cheese.
Velveeta Skillet meals are also great, similar cheese along with a dried spice mix and one pot cooking (no separate pasta pot). You can also do this with Velveeta mac in the pan (if it's large enough), pour off water, and add the ingredients.
I think a lot of people underestimate the capabilities of a well maintained immune system. In my day-to-day life, I rarely wash my dishes with soap, because if you do them immediately after eating, a sponge and water is enough. Plus, anything that might be on them doesn't have time to grow in the time between meals, at which point the heat will nuke anything on the surfaces. Plus, any germs that do survive are ones from myself, and my body already has antibodies for them. The only time I do deep cleans with soap is usually once a month, or if I have guests, whichever comes first. I haven't been sick in over 15 years, minus whatever bug hit me for about 3 days in early 2020 (could have been the coof, for all I know). The really important thing is to wash your hands regularly. I also advise people don't hyper-sterilize their living space; first of all, it ain't natural, and you have some sort of OCD or something needing to be addressed. Second, if you never let your body encounter common bacteria/germs, you will get sick more easily and hit harder as your body has to take time to build up the anti-bodies it should have already had ready to go. I've noticed when I go camping with friends/family, the ones who live hyper-sterile usually get sick. Something to think about.
Just watching this at eleven in the evening here in cork City Ireland and starving before I go to bed, gret videos dave.
I like that you took the time to acknowledge the fella that gave you the idea for the video & that you’re sending him a little care package. That’s real decent of you. Cheers.
…and now i know what I’m having for dinner tomorrow.
I always like these meal prep videos you do, Dave.
My grandfather taught me to use sand, he travelled a lot and said he used to use nothing but hot sand to scrub and clean out pot and pans and plates. He even said he would cook sand in a cast iron dutch oven to clean out the other pots he had then use the rest to scrub out the dutch oven. i love how Dave is souch a happy eater. it just makes me smile.
Me too. Cooking outdoors in the fall and having comfort food is hard to beat. I´d take that over a fancy restaurant any day - even a rainy day.
I agree! And if usually makes me want to cook what he just ate!!
I live full time in the bush (I don't have a house) and i find your UA-cam channel to be the only one not full of fluff. Great video, as always.
I’ve cleaned skillets, pots, pans and utensils many times with just boiling water and scraping them out. It works like a charm every time.
For cast iron that is the standard procedure. Sometimes I do that at home even though I have plenty of soap and water.
I've learned so much from you over the years. I appreciate everything you do for all of us!
Great to spend time in the woods with Dave!
Now, that is a man enjoying his camp cooking and it looks great Dave. Really good stuff on responding to the clean up question, I've often wondered about good solutions.
It made me smile to see how much joy Dave had while eating that chili-mac! Thanks for the good video.
Always enjoy your videos, whether it's a cooking video or something else. Keep them coming.
I look up to Dave, grew up watching him. Miss the days I would be home sick from school to rewatch episodes of him on discovery channel. Now I’m 24 at work watching him on UA-cam!
A pine cone can be used as a pot scrubber, preferably one that hasn't opened up. We did that a lot to clean pots while my boys were in scouts.
I’ve also used floating pine needles as an abrasive when on backpacking trips and it works really well with no soap. Great video
Hello David, once again it was a pleasure meeting you a few weeks ago, love your content brother, have a blessed day.
Glad to see the cooking show is back. Cheers DC from Australia.
Wow, leaves are like nature's paper towels! So simple yet I would never have thought of that! Thanks Dave!
Goooolllly! Thanks Dave, another great video. Nothing like eating over a campfire on a cold day.
TEXAS PETE ! Can't have camp food without Texas Pete!
My wife and I had a prepackaged meal something similar on our honeymoon in GSMNP! We still talk about it today! Can't go wrong with chilli Mac!
Love it. Simple process to follow. And also a good reminder to bring more water and emphasize water procurement.
I cook a lot outdoors and do very minimal cleaning. After the meal, I simply swipe all sauce left in the pot with my fingers and lit it dry.
Did this exact meal at scout camp, outstanding camp meal. Thanks for the camp meal recipe brother
I remember in Boy Scouts having a pot of boiling water to dip the utensils, plate, etc into to prevent illness from bacteria as the last step in cleanup.
Hey, we use the same can opener. I've had a John Wayne on my key ring since '79 or '80
Love these cooking videos Dave!
Came across an old video with Dave in Dual Survival where his snare trap got a pig then he crafted a 2-person raft out of bamboo. JUST ALL AROUND BADASS EPISODE.
when I lived in SW desert, I cleaned all my cook wear with sand. rinsed in water spray. I always had plenty of water to drink..
Pine needles scour skillets pretty well too.
👍👍👍☆☆☆☆☆ Very educational experience ! Thanks Dave ... Alan 🇨🇱
Great weather for some outdoor chili mac..👍
The one piece of outdoor gear i've had for over 20 years and goes in my ruck every trip. A simple beer towel, had the same one for 2 decades and it's still going strong. I use it for cleaning and loads of over stuff 👍
I was wondering what I should do with those cans of beef in my pantry before they expire. Great idea
Well it all goes back to that camp selection the 3 W's Wind, Water, & Widow makers.
The Chili Mac is a great 3-item recipe. It was helpful to remember that high-quality canned pure meat products are readily found in the marketplace these days.
Not up here 😔 never seen ground beef in a can.
Informative and beneficial video

Dave, that dish looks delicious and the bad part is I can't smell it or eat some. Yummmm.
Oooh, gotta have real beef but the can is good for emergencies. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Rubbing alcohol and paper towel. Truck driver. Works like a charm. Degreaser, disinfect and you don't have to dry it.
Leaves a weird taste sometimes
Yes, always had several several bottles of alcohol in the rig... f/ dishes, utensils, washer fluid additive, air line antifreeze, sanitary jugs , etc... very versatile 👌 THANKS , Alan 🇨🇱
Excellent. Efficiency of old school approach =)
Yep good stuff. Have fun stay safe.
By far my most favorite hot chow meal in the army….. love me some chili Mac!
Great video! This reminds me of the video you did about personal hygiene in the field.
Great clean up data. Thanks!
Thanks for showing clean up in your video. It helps out.
seems like yesterday i was watching the journal or the yurt... time fly's
Great series. Journal of the yurt kind of feel. Love it. Thanks

Food looks great Dave!👍
Excellent Video! Thank you
That's the way to attack that pan of chillimac Dave , just scarf it down ! It looked awesome man , can't wait to try it. Great job on the clean up too.
Dave I have that brand of meat in my preps and it is EXCELLENT! They also carry shredded pork, chicken and turkey. Try the pork!
That's awesome Dave I haven't made chili mac for a long time and I just made it a week ago for the kids so they could try they loved it one of my favorites from when I was a kid, also you should try useing the Velveeta Shells and cheese one time it's really good with that creamy cheese like that

Thanks for sharing this cooking video I will add this to my camp cookbook. oh and you should make a cookbook.
Looking forward to trying that recipe when next at camp
Ive used things like dried grass ,moss and tree or safe weed leaves
You can't go wrong with chili mac. That looked dang good. I have never seen or heard of canned ground beef. I will have to start looking. Thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge.
You can get canned sausage and gravy too.
Gravel or pine cones also work as a scrubber.
Thanks for the recipe and tips, Dave.👍👍
I wish I had that bush pot set
Looks good for any time ..
Thank you for the video I wasn't aware of canned ground beef
7:01 - 7:15 had me pissing my pants laughing. Just couldnt stop telling us how much he loved it.
Hey another camp recipe for me to give a try. I have some canned venison I may have to try it.
Great video.
Thank you for the meal idea! I was wondering what to cook for tomorrow night's dinner, lol!

The wife and I can our own ground beef, as well as other meats. A jar or two of those in camp make for some good chow.

Great one Dave…
If snow is around it can be used to clean pots and pans

Ótimo video. 👍👍👍
We used to make this in scouts and added Fritos to it
I have a half of a sponge with scrubbing pad on one side takes up no room or weight and fits in my kit just boil water in my cooking pan when I’m done
The easiest and quickest way to clean stainless steel pots/pans is with those stainless steel scrubber sponges. A little water and those cut right thru burnt on crud. Then rinse clean or wipe dry.
I eat right out of pans and skillets too:) Don't see the need to dirty up a bunch of dishes just to stuff my belly LOL.
Just a quick question is this a meal that a student would be aloowed to make after class. Say for the basic, advanced, or intermediate classes. Great video. 😊
Chilli Mac is something Ive never heard of being from the UK. But im gonna make some!
I'm sorry to hear, but I'm also glad you get to enjoy something new! You can do chilli Mac with so many different options. My favorite is to add Frito/corn chips to the chilli Mac with lots of jalapenos.
Thanks Dave
Looks good!!
Also a dog helps!
I recently did chilli mac but a little different recipe. This is an option. Looks good. Ill have to try this. My first version was kinda a flop. 😮
Dude, just received a 6" cold handled skillet that I ordered from your etsy, been trying to get one for months now im ready
Great information.
How about a video about the different ways to cook fish on the trail. And, nice p.38 Dave. Been a while since I saw anybody have one.

Kraft Deluxe so you still have elbow noodles.
Ground beef in a can? Was it corned beef hash????
Love the chilli mac
Chili mac sounds tasty !
And a Splash or 3 of Tabasco makes it gourmet.
