  • The OFB-ARDE designed belt-fed LMG has started development trials and will be ready for user trials sometime next year. It is a replacement for the INSAS and the 1B LMG and will compete for the Indian army's global tender for LMGs.

      army will never accept this as LMG even the BrEn LMG from WW2 weighed 9 Kg modern LMGs such as Neveg (7.6Kg) or SAW(7.5Kg) or PKM (7.5Kg) weigh way less than this and PKM fires a slightly heavier round than this. This is essentially an attempt at reducing the weight of FN Mag which OFB already produce under licence for MMG role

      Abhishek Mallik MGTOW or because army doesn't want to trust the 3rd grade weapons that DRDO makes and that cost lives like in Kargil where INSAS jammed at every possible opportunity

      Chinmay great no weapon is 100 percent perfect, and its hell lot better than using insas, i bet the excalibur with 7.62 x 51 mm round is perfect, its just needs strong man to handle the recoil, btw in war you carry very heavy load, so it will smoothen the recoil, trust physics

    I don't know it's a coincidence or anything else but in MODI regime there's a trail of good news from our defense industries. This happens when a government start believing in indigenous efforts & talent. Most of our previous governments are corrupt and commission lover. This government is serious about indigenous solutions of our defense problems and that's a good thing.

      this is no good news it is just a weight reduction attempt at the FN Mag which OFB produces under license for MMG role and this weighs 9 kgs whereas modern LMGs usually weigh 7.5-8kgs

    Gun is little heavy, 9kg gun + 2.5kg 💯 round belt combine weight is 11.5(approximate). IWI negev lmg weight is around 7.9 kg. OFB & DRDO should improve the gun with further weight reduction.

    • @shubhamsharma4877
      @shubhamsharma4877 6 років тому +7

      Pushpendra Rai iwi negev is a 5.56x45 lmg this lmg use 7.62x51 round which justify increased weight.
      iwi negev with 7.62 x51 round weight without magazine is 7.8 or 7.9 kg which is equivalent 8 kg which is just one kg less than drdo rifle.

    • @rai6472
      @rai6472 6 років тому +11

      SHUBHAM SHARMA bro negev is designed for both 5.56*45 & 7.62*51 NATO rounds.
      Weight of variant of negev a/c to Wikipedia
      5.56mm - 7.6 kg
      7.62 mm- 7.9 kg.

    • @shubhamsharma4877
      @shubhamsharma4877 6 років тому +4

      Pushpendra Rai 7.9kg is the weight of weapon only without bullets or magazine while ofb lmg wieghs 9 kg . 1.1 kg for an lmg hardly matters unless u are using m27 or insas type lmg.
      but this lmg is still prototype final version might have less weight.

    • @rai6472
      @rai6472 6 років тому +6

      SHUBHAM SHARMA yes u r right in general way but in war type situation even a half kg weight is much important for infantry soldiers. 1kg is equal to 50 rounds of 7.62*51mm rounds.

    They should bring in private companies like Bharat Forge. They have been able to reduce the weight of the "indian field gun" from 4 tons to just 800 KGs. They could reduce the weight of this gun even further.

    • @amolkadam3013
      @amolkadam3013 6 років тому

      Abhijeet Dolai they can reduce the weight a little bit but such a large weight reduction will not be possible here. they did huge weight reduction in field gun but they had to redesign the whole gun. here the lmg is not going to be redesigned.

    Everyone has this confusion that ofb 7.62mmg and M240, both are same..
    FN Mag 58 came with wooden butt so with USA modifications using polymer butt and picatiny rail it became M240B, 7.62 mmg came into existence after tot with OFB removing the wooden butt and adding 81mm mortar sight 102B on it.

    9kgs would be fine for standard infantry para and folding stock versions would be shredded of weight upto 1to 1.5 kg and even the barrel would be redesigned and most importantly its a 7.62 (almost all of lmgs are only 5.56). The only thing to work out hard would be the accuracy and reliability otherwise it would be a phenomenal game changer good going india jai ho!!

    • @jagannathbarman6712

      saddam hussain Yes. Although PKM is still the supreme champion on that at 7.5 kg. Btw, it's not 5.62, but 5.56

      Jagannath Barman yup bro corrected 😅.. Look at the power there nearly 1000 rounds of raining brass would rip apart almost anything of its contemporary armor.. Hell of gun, the main challange is reliability and accuracy, but really imagining 7.62 lmg with superb rate of fire is euphoric

      i dont understand the use of 7.62 because lmgs are used for suppressive fire so 5.56 works as good as 7.62.
      almost all militaries in past used 7.62 beltfeed lmgs (fn mag=m240) then they upgraded them self to 5.56(fn minimi=m249) because they realised that in suppresive fire cartridge size doesn't matter then they realised that firing blindly with
      machine results in huge wastage of amo so they start shifting towards magazine based low rate of fire but higher accuracy lmg (m27 iar).
      i don't get why we are going in reverse direction we are already using a magzine fed high accuracy lmg (insas lmg) ,if we ignore the media hype of 7.62x51 then changing from 5.56x45 to 7.62x51 won't give u much advantage in lmg it will only increase problem in logistics ,shifting from insas lmg to drdo lmg would result in atleast 10 kg increase in combat load with reduced ammo carrying ability. 5.56x45 fullfill all need upto 500-600 meter for anything further they can use 7.62x51 dmr's and anti material rifles.
      even Russian who invented 7.62x39 cartridge shifted to 5.45x39 cartridge so why indian army want to go in reverse i dont understand.

    This is strange, going from box fed LMG to belt fed, seems like a step back. IWI Negev sounds like the way to go, with both box as well as belt fed loading options. Really can't understand why we are not adopting it for the entire panorama of forces, when we are already using it for our special forces. or developing a similar weapon.

I hope this will be able to impress the army as they don't have any option left as similar gun contract has been cancelled by mod due to single vendor sitution(only israli gun cleared the trails).

    This one seems to have an downward shell ejection like the bren gun.so,it won't suit to be used on vehicles because the empty shells will be dropping inside the vehicle so,that it could cause more problems and the second thing it seems to be bigger than normal LMG so that it can't be easily mobilized.

    Is it really necessary to have a fixed stock? Can't it be fitted with an AR style adaptable stock? I love FN MAG and all of its variants, and this looks really promising. M240b has good reputation as a sniper-rifle worthy gun, and the single shot function will utilise that will good effect.
    Btw, DRDO should start working on Carbon Fibre barrels. I assure you, that is the next big thing in firearms industry.

      ARDE needs Indian Army to start accepting these current designs, so that DRDO can ask for more funds for further development from the MoD. No matter how good they be, the ones in charge of purchase will strongly pitch for foreign vendors who will stack the former's pocket with cash and in kind. Corruption is the reason why even good indigenous weapon systems are dumped. INSAS may be a disaster, but not every system made after that is an "INSAS". Hope army will give these weapons a fair chance. Good luck.

      For sustained fire in field conditions, barrel needs to be changed frequently as it overheats. A modular interchangeable barrel is a *fundamental* requirement.

      Ofc it's interchangable. It's something that most GPMGs can't miss (count the Russian PKP Pecheneg out).

      U know Indian Army (both former days and now) still put British liscenced guns from FN Herstal in service.
      For the FN MAG ur saying, it can be either a British L7 or an MMG (Indian ver of the L7) I think.
