I'm probably missing the point, but did anyone else notice how beautifully the dress enhanced her dancing? She's exception on her own, of course, but the dress was almost weightless, it made her look like she was floating. I haven't seen such an effect in different renditions.
It's most likely made of silk, which creates that gossamar, floating, after effect. Carla Fracci had her Giselle costume made of silk tulle for that very reason. Truly lovely. And of course, the dancing is sublime.
I have seen Darcy at the Royal opera house when she danced with the royal ballet and have met her at the stage door on her way out from a performance she is a kind and generous lady and never forgot you I was fortunate enough to be at her last performance ever at the Roh and I can tell you that curtain call was electrifying wonderful the opera house erupted I will never forget that magical night and I will never forget the beauty and elegance Darcy worked so hard to bring to the stage you should see her in Sylvia and Manon sheer bliss Brava ! Brava ! Brava!
This is one of the best performances of this pas de deux I have ever seen. Bussell dances as though she is an instrument that is creating the music with her dancing. Stunning, graceful and elegant!
I love it too. There are certain pieces Bussell dances that for me can never be beaten- I particularly loved her in Winter Dreams and Prince of the Pagodas.
PotP- the middle was brutal but the last pas de deux-love it. Was lucky enough to be at the performances when she retired. Song of the earth-no wonder David Bentley choreographed it for her. Even from the God's, there was something that set her apart.
I loved Zoltan as well he was so charismatic, full of bravado must have been his Hungarian background, he was certainly no "couch potatoe" a really exciting performer that bought something extra to his dancing. I think this is one of the best Tchaikovsky pas de deux's I have seen. Thankyou for posting it.
No doubt Darcey is the most Classic Ballet performer one will one will ever encounter in the world of professional ballet! Though she is retired, she still has the magical glow ever known to anyone! Her dancing was superb! Her personality overflows whenever she speaks! Darcey, Good Luck! God Bless you and you’re family! Peter
Darcey is the personification of femininity and beauty in her dancing and her person, both now as a woman retired from the public stage and in the glorious days of her dancing career. Anthony Sharp
Seriously Darcey that was just sublime. Floaty elegant technique musicality the way she through herself into those fish dives at speed at the end was exciting. Wow!
What a brilliant performance by both dancers. Darcy Bussell was such a musical and beautiful dancer. Her costume moved beautifully with her gorgeous movement. Zoltan was an excellent partner whose dancing matched hers. This is an excellent performance of Balanchine's great pas de deux.
He is absolutely wonderful. His dancing was so sharp, fast, and bravura. She was very great too. Beautiful. Bravo them. Bravo Balanchine. Bravo Tchaikovsky.
I've been lucky enough to see her live on about 4 occasions and she truly shines onstage. Loved her with the Royal Ballet. Especially with Johnny Cope. Exquisite dancing partners!
I believe Darcy did a stintwith New York City Ballet , NYC audiences loved her. There is a video of her dancing with the company in the Agon pas de duex.

I just love when they do those fish dives, and that dress is sublime, ballet at its' best, didn't u find that you were smiling the whole time you were watching them, just gorgeous
Wow. I am in tears. I saw the couple perform in various videos, and I think also live in Tokyo, because we had a lot of performances by the Royal Ballet thanks to NBS, Mr Sasaki in affiliation with the Tokyo Ballet. But this seems like a performance when she was quite young and fresh, perhaps after Prince of the Pagodas and before the Dowell Sleeping Beauty that was recorded... Anyone fill me in. I was surprised by Zoltan, he wasn't always lucky to be recorded when he was in his best condition. I remember the documentary where MacMillan talks about Darcey and her having a fresh attack that he saw more in the States. Here, you can see that but how English her training is. The New York City Ballet has its own set of stars, and that is dazzling too, but the English daintiness you can see coming through in Darcy's phrasing and arms is a la the greats of her coaches. She was taller and long limbed compared to petite dancers like Viviana Durante or Aussie Leanne Benjamin, which was probably difficult for her in some pieces, but Balanchine works are therefore a good fitting glove for her, as we can see here. I was wowing when she prolongued her balance in places where the orchestra was sort of behind her... That is something that happens only when dancers are young and not tired from juggling life, fame and busy schedules plus injuries. It is great that UA-cam brings these telecasts to us. I hope the RB will not have this taken down. Not everyone gets to see stuff whether it is legitimate or not, and ballet is for everyone. Let the world sing joy to the world and all religions come to peace so we can enjoy the good stuff. The good stuff usually conquers the bad stuff, or the bad find a way to deal with their bad luck. Carabosse comes from the shadows, but Dowell brought her centre stage and will remain one of my favourites. Let the Shows Go On. There are many gods, and lesser Hell, so let us stay above ground rather than burn somewhere that only exists in our minds.
Aren't they just gorgeous! I first saw Darcy in La Bayadere dancing the role of the princess. She's an amazing dancer, one of the very BEST! Then saw her in Macmillan's Prince Of The Pagodas. (Anyone see it?) Saw the wonderful Zoltan dancing the GORGEOUS Manon bedroom pas de deux with the Number One Dancer Of All Time, Sylvie Guillem!!! (IMPOSSIBLE to have a favorite dancer, right!) I'd sure love to see Darcy dance Manon!!!

Wonderful dancers.....Darcey is so expressive and musical, and beautiful....the best "Tschaikovsky Pas De Deux" I've ever seen. Both dancers are superb! I LOVE this performance of my favorite dance ..thank you.
Darcy is divine in this performance; she's as light as a flower petal and as agile as a hummingbird. It's precious when technique serves art, and it can only happen in classical ballet when the dancer really masters the skills.
So light on her feet too. The dancers of late are incredibly heavy footed. You can hear their blochs land over the music. No wonder they complain of breaking several pairs of shoes per show.
For once I actually liked the fishdives in the end by a European dancer. I personally prefer Russian or English trained dancers over Balanchine but in Tchaikovsky pas de deux, only the NYCB dancers seem to really "go for it" in the fishdives. In this version I was delighted to see the fishdives I expected.
You want to talk about going for it, try and find the video from the 1977 movie, “The Turning Point” starring Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft. Oh, yeah. Mikhail Baryshnikov puts in an appearance too. There’s a thirty second section from the coda toTchaikovsky Pas De Deux where Suzanne Farrell dives recklessly, head long for the stage, as Peter Martins runs after her, and catches her just before she breaks her neck. Her head describes this pendulum-like action as she plummets to the ground. She repeats it to the other side. It’s breathtaking, and I’ve haven’t seen another ballerina since do it quite like that.
Ottimo quello che con un mio neologismo mi piace chiamare convolo aereo ed elanista della ballerina ottimamente indotto e tenuto dal partner. Ottime le pose figurali assunte nell'ensembe. She has such grace and posture. It must be difficult enough to memorize all the steps never mind learn the technique. So many years of hard work and practice that go into a relatively short performance.
Very beautiful. There is another fine performance with the impeccable David Hallberg and Maria Kowrowski. It is interesting to compare the different styles reflected in the ballerina roles. The American is a principal with NYCB and Darcey Bussell brings an Englishness to this Balanchine piece.
So buoyant! Another performance to add to my favorites--the other two are Marianela Nuñez with Reece Clark and Tiler Peck with Joaquin de Luz. We are lucky to have these three wonderful pairings. (You can tell the ballerina knows what she's doing by the series of backward hops in her variation: the dancers who stint on them know nothing about Balanchine.)
