How to get rid of BLACK ALGAE FAST!

- Black algae is one of the harder algae types to deal with.
For the longest time, I have been battling black algae and now
it seems like I am winning that battle now.
There are many different ways of dealing with black and or any type of algae. See below for methods on dealing with algae in a aquarium.
1. THE BLACK OUT METHOD.
This is what worked best for me. Turn off the lights on your aquarium for 3 days. Keep in consideration the types of plants you have and the amount of plants you have. If you have low to medium light plants, then keep the lights off for 3 days. Then keep the lights on for max 6 hours per day after that.
If you have plants that need a lot of light, I suggest keeping the lights off for 2 days max, then reduce lighting per day after that and make necessary adjustments according to the results you are getting.
Most plants do not need more then 8 hours of lighting. Try not to exceed more then 8 hours.
2. DIPPING YOUR PLANTS IN HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AND BLEACH
You can check out the video I did on this here. Click the link.

3. GETTING ALGAE EATERS.
There are lots of algae eaters you can buy to help keep algae down. Bushy nose or rubber lip plecos are great for keeping algae down. I use to have a pleco that worked great with algae.
Check him out here. • Baby Pleco getting rid...
4. CONSISTENT WATER CHANGES AND RESPONSIBLE FEEDING.
When you over feed, the uneaten food in the aquarium will cause excess nutrients in the water column which allows algae to thrive and increase rapidly. Check out this video on how to properly do a water change. Click the link.

Hi guys. Check out the description for tons of info!
I'm so glad this isn't just a noob problem. Anubias are very prone to algae considering they have a large surface area and do not move around much. I've found bleach dip works okay. The only way to get that crap off of the anubias leaves is with a damp paper towel -- a sponge or piece of charcoal filter scratches the poor leaves in my experience. The bleach dip works really well and the algae just slips off. I make sure to plop the plants directly into dirty tank water after they soak for max 3 mins(I agitate the algae to see if it comes off). I dont wait for the algae to get bleached like some peeps do. Very labor intensive but it does work well. Hydrogen peroxide is less dangerous because the chemical composition turns it into a safe chemical once exposed to water... not a chemist but I saw a video of a breeder cleansing his water with hydrogen peroxide to prep it for fragile fishies.
To keep leaves clear of algae once it has died back from light deprivation, try adding in a few rubber lipped plecos. Also after doing the blackout, take a soft bristled tooth brush to carefully scrub each leaf to remove the dead algae.
Thanks for the tips, my tank had awful black algae and it's becoming a nightmare. Gonna try a few of your tips 👍
Jonathan UK did it help to reduce the light?
did it help?
I had BBA once and tried the bleach method and most likely did it wrong and killed most of the leaves on my plants. The blackout method worked for me. Great vid, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing the learning! My new tank has black algae growing and the aquarist recommended I reduce lights to 6 hours/day. I'll also leave the lights off for a couple of days. Thanks!
Did it work?
Yeah Jonathan, did it work?
I have the same plants as you in my 75 gal tank. I just turned the lights off and plan to follow your advice. 👍
Did it work for you?
I believe that this is actually a Cyanobacterium. It is flat, slimy and so dark it looks black. It is not Black Beard algae which is furry in appearance and more of a gray in color. It killed my Java fern and covered my Anubias, especially the rounder leafed forms, even with good water circulation. There was a lot of light in the room and freestanding lamps with terrestrial grow bulbs overhead. I shaded the window and reduced the light and feeding and trimmed the black leaves but was still plagued with the Black Cyano. I tried micro dosing with 3% hydrogen peroxide. It still persisted, returning to the rocks quickly.
I had never had this issue in ANY other tank I had in over 50 years of fishkeeping. I was so frustrated and wondered if it came in on a plant or if it had something to do with natural local rocks that I had used in the setup of the 75 Gal. tank, including some pebbles that the label said were for dish gardens. I moved the rinsed Anubias plants to another tank with new sand and gravel and the Cyano started again. but grew again (more slowly) on the Anubias and the rocks. The Crypts, Amazon swords and Anacharis seemed resistant, and it didn't grow on the sand/gravel mix. 💙🐟
beautiful angels, that backdrop has got to go though! haha
So the MAIN key is Lighting ya ?
1. less light is true. 2. WATER CHANGES..big ones. 3. This harder..but the kind of light is important. I NEVER had a black algae problem when I used olden days Penn Plax gro lux. I can't find those bulbs anymore and LED lights I think are wired on the wavelength black hard algae likes.
Last? I would recommend for Anubias you use Hydrogen Peroxide on the plants AFTER YOU REMOVE THEM..as left over drip in the tank can kill mosses and ferns and Val plants. A last resort.
I have a hunch antibiotics might kill that black algae as it might be related to blue green. Just a hunch and it would take like $60+ of the stuff on my big tank for a once treat to find out!
“Do the angel fish 🐠 dance” 😂 I hit the LIKE button ❤️
Thank you. You are too kind
Don’t cut the leaves any more. Take the plants out and scrub with a tooth brush using 3% hydrogen peroxide. It takes time to do one leaf at a time but it’s worth it. Also rinse often while cleaning.
Used to have this issue fixed it by sailing by everything in bleach and ping a massive water change
Killed my plants but it never came back the blackout didn’t work for me. 😢
Thanks for the info. I too suffering the same issue. Shall try out your policy
Next time Try bleach dip or hydrogen peroxide; also, you can just remove the plant and black it out. These anubias are tough, but slow growing plants. The anubias can go without light.
having the same issue here been doing my water changes and tried the no light for 3 days but i think the room lioghts are still making it grow so im thinking a bin bag might need to go onto the tank
When I do water changes I scrub my anubias plants with a soft sponge. I'm on day 2 of black out. I'm going to get Otto's again and gravel vac more.
Less fish, more plants, less food fed at one time just enough for the fish to consume rapidly, big water changes one a week, shorter photo period. Test kits testing nitrates
Are you using Seachem Excel to combat algae in addition to your lighting regimen? Also what type of substrate is that?
Beautiful Tank
For me siamese or golden algae eater works fine everytime.. but should consider before introducing them unless u have kept java mosses or any mosses species since they too are algae
Reduce the lighting sounds like the right answer
But i dont keep my lights on max, and only for 8 hours :( this stuff wont go away from anubias
Would this work on hair Algae?
What's up brother? Is that black Angel new?
Ok, after reading my fair share of comments, I'll add my opinion. Perhaps your aquarium is overloaded with nutrients such as phosphates, nitrates etc. I have plecos & or nerite snails in all but my qt. Also, clean those sponges regularly throughout the week and be more consistent with your wc. My ultimate weapon is doing 50% or more wc, using either Purigen or Poly-Filter as a chemical filtration to absorb excess nutrients, and lastly, detail cleaning all my filters at least once a month. Good Luck to you on whatever method you select.
wyzemann this will kill your fish since u remove the good bacteria flod the fish produced by cleaning ur sponges/filter to clean.
Always wash EVERYTHING in aquarium water or treated water
Thank u for sharing ur method and opinion so much great info i agree excel is incredible.
Mine stay on for like 12 hours it’s been 3 years I’ve never had it
you might want to start up that filter .
I have the same background in my 10 gal
Careful with the gravel...
Awesome, I hear ameno shrimp eat it.... but I think your beautiful angels will eat them up. Nice video tho. I have the same problem now haha
"What's going on YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTOOOOOOB"lmfao
I used shrimps to get rid of it and it worked
My fish would eat shrimp
what kind
It's looking good
I have to two small plecos and a chubby ballon moly that loves that stuff.
Daaaaayuuuuum glad I didn't try the bleach method, I'd have cut them white leaves. Terrible. I meticulously scrubbed all my java ferns with a tooth brush. Going to try blackout soon to kill the remaining.
My lights been off for two weeks no change
Cover the whole tank with a towel so its blacked out.
I have the same problem bro
Говорят, что против красных водорослей лучше всего геринохейлус
Should get a siamese algae eater fish. They are the only fish known to eat black beard algae and other hair algaes. My tank is completely free of hair algae because i have 2 of them in my 55 gallon tank.
Andy's Angels let me tell ya somethin lol. I have 6 otocinclus catfish myself and they dont touch the hair algae at all. I ended up getting my two sae's and they cleaned up my entire tank. Im free of hair algae. Otos will only eat brown diatom algae. Please do some research. Not trynna be rude 😊🤗
Andy's Angels oh lol
@@kathleenmonsegue9700 yaa you are absolutely right Ottocinclus is a useless and most overrated fish because it can't eat most types of algae
Not enough food
i should make vids on my tanks they are insane compared to this
I dont use light.
5 hours a day is enough light
hey master aquatic ❤ your channel
Do u have a instagram account
Lol you still have algae
First comment!!!!!
75 galons ? The fuk is that shit
Second
Bleach!!!!
What?? Really??
Yeah still looks like crap man
MasterAquatics??? Really? Master? And you left your tank to become like that? Good advice regarding the lights but after the unnecessary blah blah (1 min af advice in 10 mins), I believe the whole video was just for the ad about the flakes at the end.
blah blah blah
I love hearing the lips when they eat😂😂😂
