    I tried the ruler method today with my Y10s (14-15 year olds). Dropping a ball from a bench our value of g was too low but with the ball dropped from a beam just below the ceiling we got very good results. It helps them to understand that greater distance and greater time makes the reaction/response time error less significant. They also came up with the idea of one phone at the top (measures too long) and one at the bottom (measures too short) and taking the mean of these. Lots of good practical physics learning in this .

      Free fall. The plumb bob is sufficiently heavy that air resistance is negligible…

      Without considering air drag, the error comes solely from the time measuring, which is in the order of half of milissecond. Also I dis-considered the time for the sound to arrive at the phone, which is near 3 milisseconds per meter of distance....

    Could you tell me which software you used to make the graph of time as a function of height?

      I am quite sure that this graph was created with gnuplot - mostly because I used that for most things at that time. Mostly switched to Python and matplotlib since then because it is a much more familiar syntax than the gnuplot language.
