Agreed! Although most money are allocated towards surrounding hard and soft infrastructures (like roads, sewage, etc) the fact that they’ve underpaid their workers is alarming. Of course, we also don’t know their minimum wage laws and whether or not we should hold their labour laws to western/European countries’ labour laws is definitely up to debate. But in my opinion, if people are dying and are suffering from major health issues just from working- laws and policies needs amending, and workers need to be compensated.

It's beautiful visually, I'm Canadian and when I visited Qatar last december I was disappointed and I didn't like the experience at all, hot weather, no vibe, no identity, empty, artificial, copying all other styles...rare locals appearance only workers from other countries... I prefer Morocco or Egypt as an Arabic and Middle Eastern experience, they are richer culturally, identical, dynamic and vibrant with soul.

Just the planning will take a few years before a brick is even laid. The other potential hosts (USA and Australia) already had the stadiums built and therefore 12 years is plenty to make the necessary modifications to prepare for the World Cup. If Qatar wanted the World Cup without slave labour then FIFA should of awarded them the 2034 World Cup back in 2010. That would of given the workers plenty of time to get everything ready. Because in the past a lot of house keepers work for few months and then flee the country with valuable stuff like jewelleries while the house owners are away. Oh really, how did you come to this idea? I was there and saw 8 games. And this was my 3rd world cup being there, and I've watched world cups at TV since 1990.
It's beautiful visually, I'm Canadian and when I visited Qatar last december I was disappointed and I didn't like the experience at all, hot weather, no vibe, no identity, empty, artificial, copying all other styles...rare locals appearance only workers from other countries... I prefer Morocco or Egypt as an Arabic and Middle Eastern experience, they are richer culturally, identical, dynamic and vibrant with soul.

@@mohamed.khaldi yes. Usually they were promised bigger salaries and other jobs like driving etc but when they come to qatar their passport is taken, made them sign another contract with much lower salary and given hard labour job in 50 degrees.

In other words, even if you take the lowest figure, 6.7 times as many workers have died during construction for the 2022 World Cup than for every Olympics and World Cup Combined for the past 30 years.

Qatar was awarded the World Cup in 2010, although 12 years seems like a long time to prepare, given they had to build the stadiums and most of the surrounding infrastructure from scratch only slave labour could of achieved this. Just the planning will take a few years before a brick is even laid. The other potential hosts (USA and Australia) already had the stadiums built and therefore 12 years is plenty to make the necessary modifications to prepare for the World Cup. If Qatar wanted the World Cup without slave labour then FIFA should of awarded them the 2034 World Cup back in 2010. That would of given the workers plenty of time to get everything ready. My condolences to all the labourers who died 💔

There is such controversial conversation going around in the comments. All westerners and media are complaining how these infrastructures were built on blood of slaves. Being a resident of gulf, majority of the population living here are from India, Pakistan, bangladesh, egypt, and phillipines. People from these countries escaped their countries to earn from here and send revenue back to their countries. They came here knowingly about the harsh temperature amd environment and yet they decided to come and work here. Additionally, according to the gulf law, all labour and harsh work is supposed to happen during nights and mornings. It is punishable by law if any agency is caught forcing their labour to work in high temperatures.
Additionally, where are the human rights when all these westeners come, spend and enjoy their holidays in the skyscrappers, resorts, and hotels. Those infrastructures are also made by the workers and labourers from these underdeveloped/developing countries. Are these rights mattered only when the infrastructure for Fifa is built. The problem isnt with human rights neglection. The main hidden problem is Fifa being held in a muslim country which many westerners cannot digest.
