    Aloha!
This is the son of the owner of Erica's Store! Just wanted to say thank you for stopping by and talking story with her. She enjoyed it and can't wait to see you two again.
Her name is Rowena, the store is named after her daughter (my sister). Hawaii itself is a big melting pot of cultures and ethnicities, many immigrating from across the pacific. Also being from Hawaii, we're not really considered Hawaiian as that refers to being Kanaka or Native Hawaiian. The term that is mostly used is "local" as it covers a vast population of those who have lived in Hawaii extensively and even those who are born here.
My mom has extensive retail experience as she was a manager at Carter's, Macy's and Charlotte Russe. All without a college degree! Filipino food is good for the soul, but bad for the body lol.
But again, much mahalos for stopping by and featuring her on the vlog!
Safe travels and be blessed! :D

I’m glad to see Rowena here. I shopped at her shop both times I was there and the second time was this past July and I brought my sisters. Tell her I said Hi!

First, I clicked because of the title! I was watching Waikiki videos for updates, then your video came up! I actually got nostalgic when Erica showed you the Pinoy foodstalls inside that building adjacent to her shop you bought your shirt. I go take the The Bus from Waikiki, Kuhio Street to Hotel Street to Downtown, Chinatown, and eat the most delicious Pinoy food there. Even though I'm Filipino, cannot get away from it, or cannot get enough of it, go figure, Filipino food! Everytime I'm in Oahu, the first thing I'd do, checked in at the hotel in Waikiki, and then hit that Bus to Hotel Street and eat Filipino food in Chinatown. Typing this right now makes my mouth water, and I think I'm gonna head to Pinoy restaurant close and have some Filipino food, LOL! BTW, your shirt, the color of that Hawaiian shirt you chose and bought is right on, cool! Been awhile I have not been to Oahu, Hawaii, used to go almost every year, late 1990s to early 2000s! Lately, been sporadic traveling there, the last time i was in Oahu, Waikiki, was like 9 or 10 years ago. You mentioned you've been to the Philippines, and you said something about Chinatown "all over the world" so, was wondering if you've been to the one in Manila, which from what I've heard one of the oldest in the world. Haven't been there myself, but surely would go if I'm back in the Phils! I'm Filipino, but grew up in the province, but now in the States living in Southern California where I'm watching you! Chris love tacos! Thank you! 🙂

Its part of our culture history its called kukui nut shells!Woven with skill and intention, this lei is a token of love, respect and admiration. Traditionally, the giving of a kukui nut lei symbolizes a deep bond between individuals, whether it be between friends, family members or lovers. It is a gesture of aloha, conveying sentiments of warmth and affection.

It is so important to make a list of transportation at a place to make the most out of it. Hawaii is one of those places where car rentals are needed to explore the different places. It is cheaper than using taxis or uber. Tours are the best ways to spend your money in a place. You learn so much and really get the feel about a place. Hawaii is made up for hundreds of islands, but just a few main islands. The highlights of Oahu, a main island of Hawaii, include Iolani Palace, Kawaiahaʻo Church, Waikiki Beach, North Shore Beaches, Waipahu Plantation Village, Polynesian Cultural Center, Manoa Hike, Bishop Museum, Sea Life Park, Diamond Head Hike, Pearl Harbor/Arizona Memorial, Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden, Waimea Valley, Valley of the Temple Memorial Park, and Kaena Point. The list isn't exhaustive, but will give you a feel of Hawaii. A car is a definite must.

Chris, 99% of the Filipinos in Hawaii are Illocanos. They speak Ilocano. Most Fililpinos on the mainland are not Ilocanos, and they speak Tagalog. It's like the Chinese population on the mainland. Majority in the Chinatowns are Cantonese (e.g., Hong Kong) and they speak Cantonese and not Mandarin. Btw Chris, I too am Filipino-Mixed (Ilocano-European-Hawaiian) from the Big Island of Hawaii. One of my European ancestors was a Whaler from New England (eastern part of the mainland). Anyway, I'm currently living in Michigan (had moved to Michigan in 2017 for law school)

FYI....@ 10:00...The fire that gutted Chinatown started out as a "controlled burn" to eradicate rodents that carried bubonic plague. But, like everything else, Mother Nature had other ideas & high winds quickly spread the controlled burn & the ensuing inferno destroyed 8 blocks, >7000+ homes & caused $1.5M in damages....
....BTW...When referring to "Hawaii" you could be referring to the State of Hawaii OR the island of Hawaii aka Big Island. For future reference, think of Hawaii (state) as consisting of different counties....1)Kauai & Ni'ihau; 2) HNL, Oahu; 3) Maui County=Maui, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Kaho'olawe; 4) Hawaii island aka Big Island

There’s also a lot of crackheads in Chinatown Chris! I lived in Hawaii almost my whole life..met my wife there and all of my kids were born there. There’s no doubt Hawaii is paradise, but there are some places there that is dangerous and Chinatown being one of them, especially at nights! I live in Texas now but watching your vlog it looks like they cleaned up Chinatown a little bit just don’t go there at nights. Watching your vlog brought back a lot of memories. Don’t know if you’re still there, but i would really recommend you to go to the windward side of the island …Kailua, Kaneohe and the North Shore where the beaches aren’t so crowded and the scenery is amazing! Watching your vlog brought back a lot of memories…mahalo for sharing! Stay safe & God bless! Aloha . 🤙 🤙

Sorry, those ladies where you bought the lei didnʻt tell you that people in Hawai'i don't wear artificial lei like the ones you got. That's more like what you'd see in other states at "Hawaiian" events where they can't get the real flower lei. Ironically, Chinatown is the best place and generally least expensive place to buy fresh flower lei, especially on Maunakea St. As Gladys said, lei are given to greet or say farewell to people (usually tourists), but for residents, they are given for special occasions like graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, Mother's Day, etc. as well political events, guest speakers, and of course, Hawaiian music and hula performances. Lei should be made (or bought) and given to someone, rather than purchased for oneself. The intention of the person making or giving the lei is important; it's not just a decorative adornment like jewelry. I think a lot of the vendors selling tourist stuff are immigrants who don't really know the real significance or history of Hawaiian things, or they aren't confident about their English, so they don't want to try to answer your questions. That Filipino lady was more typical of the friendly helpful people you'll meet around the Islands.

14:43 The strange dichotomy of this place, 2 diametrically opposed ways of life, a massive valley between them. Especially jarring on Kalakaua Avenue. Nordstrom, Jimmy Choo Shoes with security guards in suits at the front door and some guy crapping on the sidewalk or ranting incoherently right outside.

Downtown Hawaii has a day and night personality. Night time it can be sketchier with women? Working corners.
